Lots of 19mm NATO straps on eBay, but quality is unknown ... Dark brown leather would look great, for a change of pace.

Say, if you really miss the "old look" of your watch, I could wear it on the job for a couple years, and send it back to you in pre-refurbished condition.

hehe hehe hehe

I nearly sold it at some point because I wasn't using it, but it's getting a lot of wrist time lately.

All that effort to refurbish it, a lengthy money-can't-buy personal connection to your Father, and a fantastic looking watch in its own right? Each to their own, but I think you'd be completely nuts to sell it.

Don't even think about selling it. Looks fantastic!

One thing that surprises me is they said they couldn't guarantee water resistance. I would have thought the RSC would have all the gaskets, tooling etc to do that.

My father doesn't mind, the condition was that its replaced with another though (he is still around :) ) It was my late grandfather who was the collector and we still have a few yet undetermined models from the 50s (said father isn't into watches), although the one I'm seeing tomorrow which went to my sister who still wears it everyday is interesting as I posted it here 8 years ago. 36xxx serial with explorer dial and large bevet crown. It went in for a refurb 3 years ago but she was clever enough to tell them not to replace the dial. They were supposed to take note of the reference number so I'm taking it to RSC Johannesburg next week for the, to check as they are still looking for the service info the archives.

They did say that they were lucky enough to have original movement parts still in stock back then.

Hers

I don't think the AK needs a service, it's been keeping perfect time for two weeks now and was in a safe for 8 years. It's only had one in nearly 50 years haha. I'm keeping it of course, it is a great watch.

Lume shot

Absolutely fair enough! I didn't realise it was such a treasure-trove of fantastic old pieces to choose from. Kudos to you both for keeping your Grandfather's watches current & ticking. Cheers for posting the photos as well, fascinating.

I love seeing some of these old threads pop up! This is a great quote from JJ, since Rolex's aren't the only thing that will live forever...Posts on forums will too! RIP JJ!!

Great looking watch too! I've had a couple other vintage watches restored (one from my Grandfather and another from my Dad)...It's always great to wear and enjoy them once again!
