For me, yes. It was the first, and in my mind is the quintessential Rolex! Even though I have been wearing my Polar Ex II more often recently, the Sub is a keeper!

A "Must"? No, but it's desirable. I think a diver is important for a complete collection. If you want a Rolex diver a Sub, SD, DSSD all do the trick. Said another way, a collection with a DSSD doesn't need a Sub to be complete. I have an Omega SMP and feel that does the job of diver for me.

Agree. If it floats your boat, that's great and have at it. But I have kept passing on it when I have purchased the watches that are in my meager collection.

Not at all. It's a handsome watch but nothing about it compels me to want to buy one. I'll get a couple of GMTs before I end up getting a Sub.

I prefer GMTs over Subs, but yes I am very glad I have a Sub in my collection!

No....great watch though!
I had a Sub for 30-some years and gave it to one of my daughters. I like Explorer-II's better.... I think the Explorer-1 is the coolest watch Rolex makes, but it's too small for me at 39mm. |

no its not
there is no such thing as a must have for any collection i would not try to build a collection that appeals to most people, which indeed would include a Sub and a steel Daytona, i am building a collection for me but with that said i would like to own a sub, however my collection does not feel incomplete without one

When you close your eyes and picture a Rolex, which model comes to mind? With me, it was my Sub. So, yes.

Yes for me but when I'm bored with all other brands definitely will add SD 4k instead of Sub.

I like the cleanness of the dial over a GMT, the option for no-date, and the thinness over a Sea Dweller, but its a personal choice.
Personally, a vintage Sub and a modern SD4000 or BLNR are my ideal duo. You could also do a vintage GMT and a modern 114060. |

For a "collector" I'd say yes because it's an icon...for the rest of the world, buy what YOU like

I don't think it's a must-have, but any collector should have at least one of the iconic Rolex watches - the Submariner, the GMT, the Daytona or the Datejust.

Not for me. I feel no particular attraction to it and any dive watch's main forte' is irrelevant to my life. If I'm ever umpteen hundreds of feet underwater it means I'm already in the belly of the giant squid or great white or whatever other sea monster that ate me.

Oh, yes... Once you go sub.... You never go..... Hummmmm.. (Something that rimes with sub)...
I think it an iconic piece that is a great addition to any collection (not indispensable) but very desirable.... I love mine.... |

Think the Sub is great but it's not a must! Get what you like.
