My subjective advise to you would be Datejust as i have Datejust II myself :) you are kaw student and accordingly in the future you will be lawyer. You will spend most of your time in a suit and classic watch will fit you better. However, nobody can tell you what watch is for you as we are all biased based on our own and subjective beliefs. Only you can answer this question by putting watch on your wrist. Buy that watch which gives you best feelings and fits to your wrist better.

I am one watch person type as well, however TRf spoils people and makes them watch addicted. Recently i bought a Rolex but now i want another one. Exists quite big possibility that if you are registered on this forum that this watch will be only a start of your watch collection :)

The best thing is to buy both. If forced for a one only solution the DJ by a whisker.

Welcome and good luck with your choice

Of these two, I would go with the DJ if only because I like having the date.

They are both great. Try them both on and see which one does it for you the most.

I would go Explorer but it sounds like you have made your decision with the "charm and elegance" of the Datejust. Really, not a bad call on this one.

Wow thanks for all the great insight everyone! Figured I'd address a few recurring themes I am seeing in the comments..

As far as the one watch thing, I do plan on eventually getting a more high end piece (YG 36 or 40mm Day-date, or gray face current model 40mm Yachtmaster.) However, I won't have the disposable income necessary for such a splurge for quite some time. I did not mention this in the original post because I still want to treat this purchase as if it is my last, just in case this is the only Rolex I can buy.

With regards to the submariner, I love the design, history, and functionality of the watch. My conundrum is that the new sub is extremely ill-fitting on my wrist. I am about 6 feet tall and 165 lbs, and the maxi dial on 114060 just does not look proportional to my stick arms. And while the sleek look of the older models is absolutely stunning, (14060 in particular), I cannot do without the bracelet and Glidelock on the new models (Texas heat).

Finally, I'd like to see if anyone could post pictures of their Exp 214270 with a suit or their 116200 with a suit (preferably the white roman oyster). I figure most of my time will be spent in a suit and any additional use of the watch on casual occasions will be a bonus.

Thank you all!

EXP1 all the way. There's just something about its simple design that really adds to its charm. It's also very contemporary with its new size. DJ is great, but looks more dated IMO. Both excellent choices, tho.

I reckon the white face DJ. It works best with a suit and the smarter end of of casual. And it's not to say you can't wear it to the beach or pool on weekends.

There are some really nice weekend watches to be had for 2 grand if you find later the DJ is just not really working for you on weekends and you have managed to put a little bit aside. I'm thinking Oris 65, Longines Heritage Diver, or my current favourite, the Eterna Super Kon Tiki. You can weekend, holiday, mess around with those and should somethi g happen, you haven't lost a Rolex even though you'd be pretty bummed.

Starting out at work, heading off to a few weddings in about five years. I just think DJ white face is better. An Explorer 1 with the longer hands can never be wrong though.

First off, you're welcome for all the advice, it's what we're here for.

Next, you just answered your own question:

"I do plan on eventually getting a more high end piece YG 36 or 40mm Day-date, or gray face current model 40mm Yachtmaster."

Those are more Dress watches, so it makes the decision to get an Explorer your only option more than ever. Get the Sport model first (Explorer) then get a Dress model in YG (Day-Date or YM) or SS (Datejust) later.

Since you like the DJ with the smooth bezel and Oyster bracelet which is identical to the Explorer, it really only boils down to dial style and the black/stick Arabic dial will look great against a suit or jeans whereas the white full-Roman dial will not. And, again, down the road when you get your Dress watch, you won't have redundancy, you'll have the best one-two punch Rolex offers in a top Sport model and a top Dress model. My one-two punch is above. Far more wrist time given to my Explorer than my Datejust. I have my Datejust on a Jubilee bracelet to differentiate the two even further.

If you really do go with one watch I think the Explorer is the one. There are very few watches that can truly pull double duty. The Explorer works with everything effortlessly. Also I think 39mm is the perfect size based on your height and weight.

I think most of us started off as a one watch guy, but most end up with multiple. I think it's good to eventually have one smooth bezel (dressier) and one professional bezel (sportier).

Good luck and post some pictures once you get it!

My first ever Rolex was an Exp II,

2nd Rolex I bought was a Datejust.
The Datejust got most of the wrist time.

I would get he DJ, but the 36mm watch may be a thing of the past soon

Explorer has the black, simplistic dial that is the hallmark of a sports rolex but also has the polished bezel and polished dial markers that give it just enough bling for dress.

Only one of the two watches can be worn all the time to all occasions, will look as smart with a tuxedo as it does comfortable with jeans, and that's the explorer.

+1

I'd suggest the DJ with the Super Jubilee for your first Rolex, and honestly if you buy one, you're very likely to buy another.

Go Datejust. It will dress up better than an Explorer.

Datejust is a Dress watch so that is to be expected. The more important fact is that the Explorer dresses down so much better than a Datejust.

Oh, and if Don Draper is any barometer, the Explorer dresses up just as nicely as any DJ ever could.
