At the core - I am a Daytona fan.

Not that these things should be considered investments but it doesn't hurt that you aren't burning a stack of hundreds when you get one.

That's exactly the sort of information I was looking for -- I really wasn't trolling; I was genuinely curious.

So, really, your interest stems from the watches' racing connections. Given that I know nothing about racing, that perhaps explains why they don't call to me. I do understand now: it's the racing version of the Submariner popularised by the Bond movies -- or (to me) the equivalent of the Pepsi in Air America/Magnum P.I. and the root beer in the Dirty Harry movies?!

Speaking of that value thing, is that driven by scarcity or popularity? (Or. both)?

Well said. I think it appeals to a lot of us "car guys." When mine comes in, I guess I'll find out if it's a 30 year keeper like my DJ. I should live so long....

I don't expect to be around in 30 years but here's to happy and healthy enjoyment of your 116500 when it arrives!

And yes Shedlock - much of the pricing is due to demand outstripping supply.

Early vintage pieces that are very expensive were unpopular originally. There just ain't that many of them out there.

Modern SS Daytona sold at a premium for years. TT and gold models and now the Platonas sell at discounts.

I once had a chance meeting with a Rolex rep when I was on the wait list for the white 116520.

Congratulated him on the brilliant strategy of deliberately holding back the # of SS Daytonas.

He told me it was a simple matter of them only have so many movements per year.

They made more money on the PM pieces so more Daytonas were made in TT or PM than SS. That's it.

He wasn't a dealer and/or trying to sell me anything so I have no reason to disbelieve him.

Daytona is a very sophisticated timepiece, IMO, and not for everyone.
