I think I get what you're saying. I like the idea of the Speedy much more than I enjoy wearing it. The one time a week I wear it, it's fantastic. But I just don't have that drive to want to put it on like I get with my Datejust. I figured if that's the case, why keep it? Even if I sell the Speedy and the Tudor at the current used market price averages, I am more than 75% of the way to a gently used or grey market 116610.

I totally get where you're coming from. Based on what you just said, I think you won't miss the Speedy too much and will be very happy with a SubC.

For me, the history of the Speedy just makes it such a special watch. Even if I don't have a desire to strap it on in the morning, I would like to own a piece of that history in my collection. Like you said "I like the idea of the Speedy much more than I enjoy wearing it."

If the SubC is your dream watch and you've tried it on and fits great (you said you have smaller wrists) then go for it. Personally I would say try the Speedy on a leather strap before you get rid of it. The black strap your Datejust on would fit perfect or a nice quality brown leather. The nice thing about the Speedy is it looks great on the bracelet and strap. If it still doesn't do anything for you then get rid of it and the Black Bay.

The Black Bay's are nice but I don't like their side profile...just too big of a case wall without anything breaking it up for me.

Ben, I have a 6.75" flat wrist. The SubC is not too big on my wrist, but it's about as big as I want to go.

As far as the leather strap, when I wear it on one of these straps is when I have reservations about selling the Speedy...

Funny (and kind of sweet) update. So this evening I took my wife out to dinner. We discussed a few things so I decided to ask her opinion on this topic. I don't often chat watches with my wife as she could care less about my hobby. She has weighed in here or there in the past but to her all watches are more or less the same.

She listened patiently while I explained what I was thinking of doing and how I was considering selling the Speedy and the Black Bay. As I was talking I noticed she was getting teary eyed. I stopped talking to see if she was ok and she said she was a little disappointed that I was considering selling the Speedy. She was the one who bought it for me as a gift and she expressed how she was hoping it would stay in the family as an heirloom. We don't have many heirlooms from either or our parents. I had no idea she liked it so much. I never figured she would care if I sold it regardless of the fact that she bought it for me.

To be fair, we have had some great experiences together with this watch. One of which was last fall when we entered a watch vlog YouTube channel competition that was "Moon themed" photo contest. We dressed up my youngest daughter like an astronaut, made a paper maché helmet for her, and slapped the Speedy on her wrist on the NASA strap. My daughter was just learning to sit upright that same week so we had a great time trying to position her for her "NASA glamor shot". It was such a fun little photo shoot. We made the paper maché helmet together, we worked together to get our daughter to sit just right, and we snapped about a hundred photos before this one turned out..

We didn't even care if we won or lost we had so much fun with the contest. The contest closed and a few days later I get a message from the YouTube channel telling me they selected our picture! The prize was an author autographed copy of the Speedmaster book "Moonwatch Only".

Well, I guess the decision is made. The Speedy stays. I need to give it more wrist time and see how it goes but my wife helped with the perspective. It sounds weird but I kind of love the watch more knowing how much she likes it and that it has sentimental value for her as well. If down the road I absolutely don't wear it I can sell
It then, but for now it stays.

So here's where I've landed. The Speedy stays, the Black Bay is on the chopping block. I will either;

1) Sell Black Bay and keep Speedy and Datejust and save for sub

Or

2) Sell Black Bay and the Datejust and just go for the sub now.

Or

3) Keep what I have.

I love the Datejust but I just picked it up a couple of months ago so I don't have any real sentimental connection to it though I love how it looks and wears.

I'm going to take some time to think through my options and go from there.

I truly appreciate the feedback that you have all provided. It has been helpful.

Nice story. Definitely keep the speedy. I'd sell both the datejust and BB and get the Sub now. If you want to keep the datejust then definitely sell the BB and save the difference.

That speedy on a strap is a stunner!!!!
Should I ever get one I'd go that route...

Sell the Tudor. If you sell the Speedy you will end up buying it back (personal experience).

i have a third option: swap the speedy for a thc and that way you'll have a daily watch with a date and you can save for a 116610.

Well now you can't sell the speedy. Marriage is much more important than watches.

You COULD buy a 40mm speedy -- CK2998? -- for you daughter's wrist and save the 42mm speedy for your future son. And wear the CK2998 on your 6.5 " wrist until she's old enough...

And then save up for an upgrade to the BB.

Would never.... the subc is so common and the case is awfull. The SM and BB are understated and in my opinion watches for people who know watches.

Nicely done collection.
Personally I would sell the BB save a bit then get a nicely preowned Sub 5 or 6 digits.
Then you will have a great trio.

You are stuck with the speedy forever!!!!!
I would keep saving and keep the DJ.
When you have enough, sell BB and get 116610LN.

I've had a lot of watches and my Submariner was the only one I regretted getting rid of. I filled that void with a Sea Dweller 16600. I had no need for the Sea Dweller, but got a smoking deal when I was looking for a Sub or a DJ. My common sense tells me that getting rid of the Tudor would be the best way to go. It's very similar to the Sub.

Surely I am still missing a datejust, but that's not cause I never owned one - I sold my datejust II in hopes for an SS datejust 41 (I'm an SS kinda guy).

I also agree that the datejust and sub are a perfect well rounded duo collection, but I would never rid my speedy pro, the watch I have an intimate relationship with every morning :).

That's just my personal point of view of course.
lhawli, my assumption was based on the OP's statement regarding his Speedy:

"However, I find that it barely gets wrist time. I do love it, but for some reason I just don't get excited to wear it. I've never been a chronograph guy, with the exception of the Speedy. It was the first chronograph I loved enough to buy. I now wear it literally once a week (Tuesdays) and enjoy it for what it is, but as soon as I get home I take it off and put on one of my other 2 watches."

Hope that helps!

I feel that for watches, your tastes can change dramatically and quickly. Even though the honeymoon period is over with your speedy and you rarely wear it compared to your other watches, sometimes in the future you might go into another honeymoon period and want to wear it everyday. It's safer to keep the speedy and save up for the SubC, and the speedy and SubC together is such an awesome pair that I don't think you'll regret.

Hey everyone,

Thanks again for the feedback. In the end, the Speedy stayed and the Datejust went to a new owner. Man, I'm gonna miss that Datejust.

BUT..

In other news, to answer my own question, "To SubC or not to SubC?"

Well, I SubC'd.

My input would be to sell both the Omega and the Tudor. Keep the DateJust and buy either a SubDate or a GMT. I find my fluted bezel DateJust on a Jubilee to be my most comfortable watch. I struggled with buying either the GMT or the SubDate and the blue/black bezel seduced me. I also travel a lot and the dual time zone was an inducement. I don't think you could go wrong with either watch.

Oh I forgot to mention, the Tudor Black Bay is also gone. That one I was glad to let go, and it's no longer in circulation.

Here's why for those who are curious.

Sell your Black Bay and save up a while longer while keeping your Speedy. Sub is a perfect daily, it's one of my two daily pieces

Edit: Oops I see you already purchased. Congrats it's a great piece!
