Which Rolex Gets The Most Attention?

I used to work in a family restaurant to supplement my pension and to keep myself active. The employees were encouraged to chat up the customers and since I am a WIS, or at least an aspiring one, I would talk watches to the customers.

Almost all customers respond well to compliments on their watches and they're more than happy to tell you all about them. The exception to that is certain Rolex wearers.

I stopped talking to Rolex wearers about their watches for two reasons. One, often they are sensitive about discussing in public a $5,000-$25,000 item on their wrists and, two, in that kind of setting, it's hard to tell a fake from the real thing and I don't want to encourage that sort of thing.

I don't know about the kinds of establishments that people here patronize, but if you're getting the kind of service you get based on the kind of watch you wear, you're patronizing the wrong places.

Let me answer this: Salesmen of high end luxury items learn quickly that the one item on a gentleman's person that can tell you if he has any means is his wrist watch. Rolex watches are bought by many people, but usually only people with some dough have the SS Daytona or the YG DD or the like (there are other brands and watches that are even more telling, of course, but this example is for purposes of this discussion). So that when these salesmen see those watches (and I've noticed it more with my Daytona than my DD) they automatically sense that they are not dealing with a "lookey-loo" but, rather, a person who they believe has the means to make a purchase. And that means that you are accorded more privilege in dealing with them. (You get to handle the 100K Patek in the showcase, test drive the Lambo, etc., and the salesman will be enthusiastic instead of wary).

So I don't believe I'm patronizing the wrong places, and, as for sparing anyone the "exclusive environs", well.....this has been my experience, so it is neither wrong nor right, it just is.

Couldn't agree more. Although a Daytona probably gets the most attention and the Sub is clearly the most popular, the face of Rolex, clearly the most recognizable Rolex, is the YG Prez.

From all of the rolex ads and billboards Ive seen from traveling...the submariner is the one I always noticed. when I wear my explorer II nobody notices, but when I wear my subs...everyone asks "is that a rolex?" but the yellow gold DD is certainly in there too! my granddad owns one and when we are together people always compliment our watches

Many WIS will instantly recognise the high end (read expensive) Rolex. While the Sub is certainly a very popular model, most ordinary folk would not recognise one.

The universally recognised Rolex is the TT Datejust with Jubilee bracelet. Wear one in the wrong part of any country and you'll get lots of attention, including the attention of some who look like they will cut your wrist off to get the watch..

I agree with the sentiment on this thread....the DD is the one that most people identify as Rolex....seems that it has been that way since I started with the brand in 1972. I bought a YMII a while back because it is a huge watch with a lot of gold and I gotta say...it doesn't scream Barnum and Bailey(as most folks think )...but it does scream GOLD BULLION! Few folks know its a Rolex but it does get a lot of attention....way more than my DD...and after I tell them its a Rolex(most think its a Breitling!!!)...they nod and say "that's the busiest gold watch I have ever seen".

It's actually fun to wear.

Now for a more user friendly example. Or the life and times of Bubba. When I used to frequent adult dance clubs, there were three things the ladies would find out about the customer. They would walk up to you and put their hand on your shoulder (to tell what type of material your suit was made from); ask you how long you had been there (90% would automatically look at their watch out of habit and thus the type of watch was now known); then they would ask a local question (to find out if you were from out of town).

Being an Audi Salesman and a watch lover i "of course" give a look to my customers' watch.

Mainly because its always good to have a chat subject to share that's not the Auto.

Regarding the fact it is a "wealth" indicator, i disagree as for instance my only real luxury good will be my 16710... and i can't afford a Q7...

After asking it appears Rolexes are often a gift from a beloving wife / daughter

And i my buisness caring about the "bling" to judge one's wallet thickness is most of the time a mistake... i live in Burgundy and the wine makers who can afford my Audi are often full of mud upto the knees...and wear Seikos... and the white collars mainly Windows or Mobile phones salesmen ;-)

The YG is other history. The watch demands attention and you can spot one many yards away. Even if there are some gold imitations, they don´t hold the shine and the cleanest of the YG. Then, in my opinion, the YG wins as the iconic Rolex that can be recognized everywhere as a real Rolex. Five days ago I had to travel to Tabasco which is a dangerous place right now. The two girls who have worked in my house for a long time did not realized I have an expensive watch. Before leaving to Tabasco, my mother asked me to leave my Rolex and the two girls heard her. They just looked at my watch so impressed that I had one Rolex that my mother noticing the mistake told them it is a fake and burglar might think it is real and try to take it from me. The girls did not believe what she said of curse. My point here is, no many people recognize a Rolex even if they live close to one, but the brand Rolex is recognized in all social levels.

I went to a flea market a few weeks ago, and of course ran into a vendor or two selling replicas among their piles of knackered old watches. Almost without exception, they were Day-Dates. That gets my vote.
