I think Andrew should pay John for the fuel and time he wasted.

A guy in Istanbul wanted to buy my watch, and as soon as I told him I'd be at the airport he told me how ugly my watch was.

Some people just have no idea how to back out gracefully.

A lot of bad blood has come out of this and I'd surely be sour to have driven 20hrs for nothing if I were John. And I too would have expected an apology for being stranded downtown L.A. That being said, a deal between two people who have never dealt with one another is not made until money and goods are exchanged, and I wouldn't have taken the risk of such a loss of time and money (i.e., Tundras are great trucks (they have too large an engine to be considered pickups, really), but at ~16mpg... that little trip came at a significant financial cost!). John did take a risk based on good faith and his feelings are justified.

As for Andrew, could he have dealt with it differently? Of course! Should he have? Absolutely! I think he made it clear on several of his posts. However, and based on posts on this thread, it may be presumptuous to assume that Andrew had ill intentions. What happened in downtown L.A. surely showed a "lack of sportsmanship," but I don't think it warrants a "you're outta'here!" What's more, I will also come out and write that I find the whole "I got many friends on this post" business and the inferred threat (i.e, a "nobody will want to deal with you if you don't come through with this," really) troublesome given the circumstances.

A repeated apology and explanation from Andrew (I read some of the posts as such, but hey, I didn't drive 20hrs!) and a "I can't say I would want to deal with you again unless you're willing put forth, in good faith, risks equal to those I took on the L.A. failed deal" from John would have sufficed.

I have to smile reading this tread because it reminded me why my wife and I are so happy that we moved away from LA after more then 20 years.
Andrew J Martin behavior and response is so typical for LA it's just funny (and gets annoying when you experience it over and over). If you run into a guy like this, and there are many, it's always a problem but they never have any responsibility. The world revolves around them and they actually do you a favor if they do anything "normal" or just plain right and decent. It's called a LA cluster f***.
I'm not saying these people are outright shysters or scammers, they just don't know any better. I could tell you story after story but that would be boring.
I think that HKperf went out of his way as a seller.
What responsibility does he have beside selling the genuine product for a agreed price in CASH? Why is it the sellers responsibility to make a buyer comfortable?
Just my 2 cents
and if anyone here is from LA and gets offended by my words..... I really don't care!

Hey, Wolfwinter - I didn't even grow up in LA and find your remark obtuse. Got any more great generalizations to share with us - please do!
One last point to clarify: John was driving to Irvine and made a slight detour through downtown LA. There was no 20 hour drive to line up the sale. And making a buyer comfortable is everything. Otherwise, why in the world would any seller care about his feed back but to make the buyer comfortable.

I was raised in L.A. If you have not done so already, go rent L.A. STORY with Steve Martin.

Dude, there was a lot of money at stake - I would probably have done the same in your shoes. You were there and you went with your gut feel. In 9/10 situations where I didn't follow my gut, I've regretted it. Turns out with 20/20 hindsight you were wrong, but there was no way to know at the time. Could/should you have called HKPerf when you backed out? Yeah...I probably would have done.
Bottom line? No one got hurt, no one lost any money. One side had some significant inconvenience/annoyance, lost some gas money.
IMO this type of event is to be expected occasionally in non-AD transactions: neither side should feel bad/good about it - but if it really pisses (either of) you off, then maybe reconsider if you want to continue in this kind of business....

Wow this guy never stops. again what apology did you make ajmarton? slight detour?
what about making me wait in my truck with a 14ft tralier i was towing for over an hour at a non-parking zone for your conference call plus the time left me in the truck for your bank transaction?? plus getting lost on my way out with heavy traffic..i was over 2hrs behind schedule for moving. and now all i get is you didn't feel comfortable?
you have clearly told me you were getting cash from your bank and bailed. with screening my calls which totally throws suspicion, for not willing to take your check. check your own thread about taking cashier's checks..you your self have posted any cashiers check can be printed with real account numbers..member??
Making you feel comfortable after checking my references?? world of sales?
You flat out have no repect for peoples time and this forums if this is how you are willing to deal with other members in the future..
Just move on and stop digging any deeper. one more time MOVE ON!!!

Hey, you said you would stop by on your trip from SF to Irvine. I didn't know you were towing a trailer until we met. You parked outside because of the trailer. I told you could park in my office building for free. You did wait while I tried to get off a conference call - true - but we were playing it by ear as you weren't sure when you would arrive. Let's not re-hash the cashiers check issue. I could have given you cash if you woud have walked to the bank with me. Or I could have handed you a cashier's check at the BofA as well. But you wanted to wait by the truck and have me bring back the cash. I wanted you to come with me. You didn't want to. I am not inclined to walk several blocks in downtown LA with that amount of cash. I have apologized over and over - and to you on the last call. There is no hole for me to dig because I have repeatedly said I could have handled it better. And if you need to hear it again I am sorry about how it went down. And with that - I hope we can put this to rest.

Felly:

After just spending the time to read through this long post, I for one, support the emoticon issue from Steve, the owner of TRF, and suggest that you petition him for the add-on.

I love the notion of; "Beating a Dead Horse" emoticon just like; "the piece of fecal matter" and "monkey urinating" that we had asked to be added, for our description of fake watches, that made the cut.

Go Get Em Felly.
