I have a friend at work who loves watches but hasn't drank the cool-aid yet. I let him handle mine and try then on in hopes he'll give into the call.

A guy I work with, who I know and like, asked me if he could check out my watch today. I took it off and handed it to him. Not sure why this would be a problem for anyone... it's just a watch.

Love the amount of people that would allow others to enjoy. I totally agree, always yes. Never at the golf course on cement though, over grass or at the table no issue! The only reason I am into watches is a mentor let me try his sub on the week he bought it. I was 13 or 14, after that I was hooked! I still get to see that watch 16 years later. I have tried to buy it off his wrist many times lol. How cool would it be to own the exact watch that hooked you into this hobby after so many years?!

Always love a nice conversation about watches and don't mind passing it around.

Depends on the relationship, but like others have said, if they ask me about it or make a comment, I immediately take it off and hand it to them.

Yea my best friends can handle my Rolex and other watches anytime, I don't mind taking it off and letting them wear it for the evening or for the month - afterall, sharing is caring and not everyone is lucky enough to afford a Rolex from where I grew up.
My friends are generally the careful bunch, but I would tell them upfront not to damage it (or risk footing the repair bills and responsibilities). I never had a stranger ask me yet, but I would politely decline strangers depending on the environment/situation and the stranger in question. |

I am happy to have folks try on my watches if they are interested. My buddy was over the other night and tried on 5-6 of the watches and has decided to purchase a DJ 41 as his first nice watch.

My watches garner zero attention and I prefer that. I would feel very awkward if that happened to me. Now... showing off a finely made shoe is another story.

Depends on the person who is asking. Most people are not aware of the heavy weight of my solid gold watch (DD36 WG) so I always caution in advance "be careful, it's very heavy, don't drop it" or so...

I've been asked and I have eagerly shared my watches with many friends/colleagues...they simply have to put on a hazmat suit with re-breather and wear gloves made from the finest Alpaca wool which are covered by fine Italian silk.

Happy to oblige if asked, but this rarely happens apart from My father who often asks if he can try on the watch I'm wearing when I see him. And I'm more than happy to oblige as he has never wears a watch normally .

Have to agree Adam and after all its not some sort of exclusive item, there must be many many millions of them around in this world today.Like you say its just a watch and quite a tough watch, that touching by any human will not harm it in any way.And in almost 40 years of wearing Rolex watches you could count on one hand the number that have even noticed whatever watch I was wearing.

whenever a colleague or friend comments on a watch I'm wearing, I take it off and hand it to them to check out. I think most people would never ask, but they always seem to appreciate getting a chance to take a closer look.
Do you guys also refuse to allow people to ride in your cars or enter your homes? No doubt you spent a lot more on those things. Maybe even yell at neighborhood kids to get off your lawn? |

In all the years I have owned Rolex I have never ever had any comments or requests to try it on. I wouldn't have a problem with anybody doing that, handling it, or even borrowing it if I know them very well. As many others have pointed out, it's only a watch, a chattel, which can be mended or replaced, as necessary.

Chaps
Most of my friends who I see weekly have never even noticed my watch and I never talk about it. However if someone I knew asked if they could look at it, then fine, why not. It's only a watch at the end of the day. Regards Mick |

Interesting dichotomy we have on this forum. While there are those who subscribe to the "it's only a watch" mentality and offer up their watches seemingly without hesitation, we also have daily threads on sticker preservation and scratches/defects seen only under 100x magnification.
Well I don't have any stickers, I don't own a loupe, and it is just a watch. But let me be clear.... You DON'T wear my watch, drive my car, or dance with my wife, and we'll get along just fine. |

Of course I have no friends but if someone asked I'd want to know what car they drive.

Absolutely. My best friend (also a Rolex owner) asked to see my BLRO the first day I had it and I let him. Hell, he's driven my Ferrari, too. It's all just stuff - no big deal.

it's pretty simple folks. If someone seems unhinged whether they're a stranger or not, I'm not gonna let them hold anything of value. If someone seems to be a well balanced reasonable person who appears to be the type who won't drop or damage my watch. Sure, have a look!
It's common sense. |
