Watch nicknames prove that watch people shouldn't attempt to nickname watches because like a broken watch is only right twice a day, besides the couple passable watch nicknames (Pussy Galore, Paul Newman) the rest seemed forced or downright lame.

The world is full of good nicknames for devices and mechanical things, from Mae West lifejackets to Big Bertha cannon and Peacemaker unmentionables. Aviation has many good and acceptable ones for aircraft; BUFF (Big Ugly Fat F....ellow, FLUF (Fat Little Ugly F....ellow). Thud (sound it makes hitting the ground), Flying Prostitute (little wings/no visible means of support), Lawn Dart (because they look like one and follow the same trajectory with inop engines), Barbie Jet (small airliner), Widowmaker (self-explanatory). The list goes on and on and on....

But left to their own devices, watch people come up with names like Kermit, Hulk, Batman, and lamest of all...Smurf. If "Smurf" is considered legit (and I mean, who above the age of 5 goes around thinking about Smurfs in the first place?), why don't we just dub the Sea Dweller with red letters the "Strawberry Shortcake" while we're at it beause, you know, it has red on it.

The evidence of lameness is clear with a hitting percentage of 0.001, so in the name of all that is holy in the world of Righteous Nicknames for things, please please please stop trying to nickname watches.

I also think what you’re saying about the soda names is interesting and it didn’t occur to me. Thanks for the input.

Only thing I’d say to slightly counter that, is whether you like it or not and regardless of the origination, those have become commonly known and used nicknames for said watches.

The Rolex inventory of past and present timepieces seems ripe for even more nicknames based on the celebrities that wear them (i.e. the Clapton, the Tyler, the Mayer, the Sheeran, the Pitt et al). There is no end in sight.

From the standpoint of comic characters (along with its second tier status in the Rolex line-up), Tudor could come up with a Robin sports model (the Dick Grayson) and perhaps a dressier version paying homage to the butler Alfred.

On thing's for certain, if any more Rolexes are to be named in tribute to the 'Dark Knight', Rolex is going to have to do something about improving its lume.

I am generally an easy going guy, but when a relatively well known watch Youtuber refers to his Submariner as a Subby/Subbie I want to soil my britches. The problem is some of this caught on and now people are talking about a Hammie instead of a Hamilton, Flighty instead of a flightmaster etc.
