A Rolex is at its heart a tool watch, made to be used in a variety of ways. How do gemstones enhance its time keeping ability? Put them together if you like, I prefer my watches to look like watches.

I personally like diamonds on my watch. But the factory pricing is very high.

There is the lume functionality argument. Then there's the blinged up bezels with no numbers on them anymore. No man could appreciate those.

Well, one thing you've got to consider is that this forum is not representative of your typical Rolex customer.
We're much more sports watches oriented here. Just start a thread asking if you should buy a sub or a DJ sometime. So...we're going to be lukewarm here. But, out there... |

A Rolex is not a tool watch, nobody needs a $10,000 stainless steel watch to go diving or climb a mountain or fly an airplane or to go yachting. It is jewelry. If you like diamonds, get them! If you don't like them, then don't get them. It's that simple really. |

I think they look great on ladies and add to the appearence. Just a personal preferance. On men, I think the they look great without them. A little too blingy for me.

Diamond number markers are perfectly fine with me though and they would have to be Rolex diamonds. No aftermarket dials here. This is my grail watch at the moment. |

Mmmm, diamonds cause excessive pricing and depreciation; just say "no."

Diamonds are just an extra item on an already expensive watch. I think of it like putting a whale tail on the back of a 911, like from the late 80's. Does it make the car faster? No. Handle better? Not for daily driving an commuting. Improve gas mileage? No. But they add a certain look to the car that enhances it to some people's eyes.
Prices being equal I'd opt for diamonds on certain models, DD mainly. But I wouldn't pay extra for them as they do not improve the watch function whatsoever. |

[QUOTE=SDRider;8258845]How does gold or platinum or shiny PCLs enhance its timekeeping ability? Really, a $12 Timex will keep better time than any Rolex. The fact that we're even debating this is ridiculous.

I get what you are saying but the He valve is an additional function that has use for, admittedly, a very select few. Diamonds don’t add any functionality to the watch, like the 911 whale tail adds nothing performance enhancing, it is simply an add on to enhance the look. Some cars, the 911 RS GT3 for example, that comes with the large spoiler is made to increase down force and increase control/ handling when the car is pushed. I’d say that’s more like the He valve, useful bit to a select few. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Everybody knows diamonds on a watch have no function; they're purely cosmetic, much the same way PM is, so they're not masquerading as anything. They just create a certain look, which a person either likes or doesn't. |

Anywho old-school whale tail Porsches, i think, are now going for good money. Agree some people have cars <cough> ricers </cough> and do some 'silly things'. Of course i did some 'silly things' cosmetically and mechanically to cars during my youth. And look how i turned out? Oh... Wait... That's not good. Not good at all ---------------------------- Anyway, haters gonna hate and, as in the fashion industry, different strokes for different folks.

Yeh, and dogs are men's best friend.
Resale value seems to be inversely proportional to the level of bling for a watch. If the diamonds are more discrete (eg. PP 5170P and 116506), then they don't affect the resale value as much.
