What is your commute?

I don't work, but it takes me about ten minutes or less to get to the bowling alley on most days.

All things being equal, at three times the salary, you should be able to fix the commute problem before it becomes too burdensome.

If you are happy where you are, then maybe you should stay there.

There are way more variables than just the commute.

The original question was how long is your commute. I was merely pointing out the average commute is 48 minutes according to Gallup.

My next point is if you are getting offered three times the salary for the same job, you are currently grossly underpaid and this is a no brainer to take the new job after taking into consideration the stability of the new company.

Last point, the grass is not always greener, I have seen people leave for a perceived better opportunity only to be looking for a another job shortly after

Very true. But nowadays, it seems that people will stay an average of 3-5 years at there current job before moving to a new Company.

I am 25 and used to live in the city about 30 seconds from work. I work 10-14 hour days as wel (investment banking) and HATED loving downtown minus the night life. I felt as I never had a home. Decided to move out to the suburbs where I grew up and where my golf club was. My girlfriend and I built a small home and got a dog. (Probably more like 52 instead of 25 lol).

My commute is now 30-45 minutes depending on when I leave / traffic. It is actually kind of nice. I have XM radio and listen in on CNBC to get my daily dose and on the way home listen to a little music or call old friends I don’t talk to often. The commute is relaxing. Unless of course it’s the middle of winter...

My wife had a job in Denver, and Pueblo is a vey dangerous place to live.

I worked 12 hour DuPont schedule, so I rented a room in a college house. I only stayed there a couple nights/ days a week.

I did it for a year, but the work was dangerous and commute long.

I think it comes down to money and personal preference. For me if I'm being paid $$$$ a day I am happy in traffic happy at the tolls, happy at the parking lot, happy to work a bit late to avoid traffic, happy when the guy cuts me off, happy when a person thinks I'm tailgating them and slams on their brakes, happy happy happy.

Grandfather commuted about an hour into the city but he loved NYC and his home in greenwich, him and my nana would be married 73 years today, they made it to 70 though.

I had a friend who flew about 12 hours a week to commute for work, it would have to be $$$$$/day for me to do that.

Companies are to blame for that, usually. If you're worth a sh1t, you keep taking on more and more responsibility, but they don't pay you more. After 3-5 years you're doing quite a bit more than you're compensated for. If they don't bump your pay, you go to work for the company that will.

I've followed this path, and I've hired quite a few people who were on it too.

I would have never known this! I lived in Baltimore for close to 20 years and the city had it's share of problems but most of those were contained in certain areas. Is it the entire city or just certain areas?

I have had two hour commutes, and I've had 15 minutes (currently) I prefer the shorter distance as I'm sure you can understand. That said tripling your income is a big deal, and certainly worth some comfort trade-offs. Quality of life is what's all about, if you try it and don't like what you've given up, you have your answer. For the short term I would absolutely consider it and put effort into making it work. Banking and investing earnings when you're young pays off LARGE later in life and if you are going to be spending your time at work and commuting for at least a few years you can get to a place financially where stepping back a bit from the grind and picking a more reasonable work schedule/commute makes sense. JMHO

My commute is 85 KM one way. On a good day with no traffic it is 50 Min or so..... but for the other 98% of the time it is around 2 Hours give or take a few Min.

Only a 10 min drive each way. More often than not I have to wait for a train, sometimes 2 times but still not bad.

For an hour, I would do it. I commute 1.5 hrs each way. While it's a pain on some days, it's worth it for the job. You can also always move in a year or so when your lease is up.

When not on the road I work from home. The commute from the master bedroom to my office is glorious. My wife says half the month I'm on the road, the other half I'm in my robe.

My commute is typically 25-35 minutes, which I don't mind at all. About 4-6 weeks per year I work at a facility that is a minimum 90 minute drive in the summer, and atrocious in bad winter weather. Thankfully we've come to an agreement where I can cover that facility remotely the majority of the time. 2.5-3.5 hour drives home through snowstorms in the dark on a treacherous interstate or country roads was aging me too quickly!

My office is pretty close to home. Usually about 15-20 minutes each way. Most days I leave the office calm, but there are some days where a little more decompression time would do me wonders before walking through the door to "family chaos"

I also live in DFW and with the crazy migration growth to this area my commute is getting longer by the day. I’m currently about 45 minutes each way. BUT... I prefer to look for the positive in everything. That 45 minutes is my preparation time in the morning (to listen to the news, prepare my thoughts, and plan my day) and my decompression time in the afternoon (before getting home and helping take care of my crazy / awesome kids). I used to dread the commute. But after changing my mentality, I now embrace it and am happier for it.

So... that being said... if I’m you, and can triple my income with a little more commute time, I’d do it all day.

I feel like this is especially true in my industry, but I'm sure it applies to most industries.

A friend that I used to work with gave me a piece of advice that I will never forget. He said to always move up. If the company isn't willing to promote you, then move out and up.

I’m surprised you needed this advice.

Neither companies nor employees have any loyalty today and it’s human nature to always think the person you’re bringing in is better than the one you have, even though that’s rarely true.

At the time I was still pretty fresh out of college and had a romanticized idea of how career advancement worked.

I’m glad I learned that lesson early.
