That's what happens when you build a brand name into one the most valuable names in the watch world. Like the NY Yankees in baseball the name alone commands a certain elevated value and history.

Excellent marketing and a quality product.

As someone said above it’s the most known to the masses. Most people have no idea there is a whole world of fine watches above Rolex.

I am a big Omega guy and I’ll tell you hands down every single person, WIS or not thinks Rolex is in a whole different league. In the SS line is that fair? Maybe, maybe not but it doesn’t matter.

Wear what you want and enjoy.

Rolex is like Ferrari in most people's eyes, which is an incredible trick to pull off, and why I probably rate the Rolex brand as the strongest luxury one there is, pound for pound.

When I was a kid, my dad bought me a Mickey mouse watch and I loved it.
I looked at my dad's watch and I saw a little bubble on it and said why my watch does not have a bubble.

My dad said it's a Rolex, save up your money and buy one when you get older cuz it's a really nice watch. My dad bought his back in the 70s for about $200ish and he is still wearing it today. I still enjoy looking at the bubble on my dad's watch.

Compared to what...? Rolex was way more impressive when they made tool watches for a specific task, now much more a fashion statement.

Tougher than PP or AP.
Have you seen the latest freeze and boil test last night with the LVc?

I see the oystersteel marketing has gotten to you already. Regular, unbranded and non trademarked steel is just so weak in comparison

You're mixing up the Timex tagline with Rolex...........Rolex has done a fabulous job marketing their watch and instilling, in the public at large, that they make the most desirable, popular and best watch in the world........kudos to them!!!

To be clear, I never said marketing has nothing to do with it. It certainly does, but fact is, many people aren’t exposed to tennis, golf, sailing or live in neighborhoods that have Rolex billboards.

I grew up in a very poor neighborhood. There were no Rolex billboards where I lived. Tennis, golf, sailing???? Are you kidding me??? Those activities were for rich people.

I first heard about Rolex from my ex- girl friends uncle who had a fake Rolex and was showing it off. I remember him saying, “nobody can afford a real Rolex.” LOL.

That was my first exposure to Rolex. That’s when I had this impression that Rolex makes the best watches. It wasn’t marketing. It was my ex-girl friends uncle with his fake Rolex. LOL. That’s where I come from. That was our neighborhood.

I ended up being a self-made millionaire several times over, and am worlds removed from where I grew up. However, I still view Rolex watches as something very special, expensive, and aspirational to own. Never lose sight of where you came from.

I like your post Krash. The most copied (faked) watch brand by far is Rolex. The reason for this is people see Rolex watches as a symbol of success. It's the same mentality some people relate to cars & many other luxury items such as clothing & handbags. Clothing & handbags etc can be easily copied but it's different with cars. Luxury brands exist & thrive because wealthy people normally want to buy products that are perceived to be 'the best' money can buy. If a person has been successful in their life , why not wear 'luxury' brands. It gives people's feel good factor. People who aspire to be successful but aren't buy fake goods thinking people will percieve them to be successful. I personally can't understand why someone wearing a fake item would feel any satisfaction whatsoever. I personally don't care if someone wears a cheap watch or drives a cheap car, that's their choice. I like luxury. I've worked very hard over the years to build up my business & eventually reap the rewards of my success.

I heard of the brand Rolex from my boss some 30 years ago. I never got one, in fact, I always thought Role is too ubiquitous as against a Panerai and went for the latter.

Boy, was I wrong. The saying that all roads lead to Rolex seems true in my case. Got my Rolex Sub C Date back in 2009. Better late than never.

How can you possibly know what the general public perceives as the best or not?

Both are absolutely brilliant though.
In a marketing sense I think the Patek campaign (You never actually own, etc...) is problematic as it encourages Patek owners to just pass their old watch on to their kid, rather than buy him/her a new one

“WIS-WORLD” is a narrow slice of the population. Rolex is the only recognizable luxury watch maker worldwide. Yes, there may be better watches, but none move the needle as Rolex does.

Decades of expert (dare I say "genius") marketing have created the very broad perception that Rolex is the preeminent time piece. It has a great heritage, classic attractive designs, durability/reliability and good value retention. Rolex is also an attainable luxury brand to the broader public. Cheers!

“Men of action are drawn to the watch...”

That’s what drew me to the brand - divers, mountain climbers, submarine captains; not celebrity athletes who are contractually obligated to wear a Rolex.

+1

I think in many ways, Rolex did market their watches as the best watches. The crushing pressure of the ocean resonate with many people, and for a watch to withstand it is, well, epic. Hans Wilsdorf admitted he named the brand Rolex because he wanted a name that 'rolls off the tongue' and pronounceable in any language without too much difficulty--a bit like the Google effect.

A historic catalyst(s)-->quality product-->consistency-->perceived scarcity-->prestige-->a name that rolls off the tongue

No arguments here regarding people thinking of Rolex like Ferrari

The reality is Rolex is more like Porsche. Good daily beater/daily sports car, very reliable but not quite in the same league as PP/Ferrari. Not quite in the same price either, so that helps with sales volume.

"Best" is subjective.

For people who appreciate finishing and workmanship, the holy trinity is the best IMO as they spend 50 to 60% of their production time on finishing.

For people who like their watches robust and precise, Rolex is the best IMO.

For people who like value, Seiko may be the best IMO.

And the list goes on.

The WIS Rolex fanboys arr the same as Joe Blow on the street. Both of them are sucked in by marketing and think that Rolex is the best because they're just to damn stupid to know any better.

The actual point is both that average Rolex watch comes out of the factory with this precision already so doesn’t need to be regulated and that Rolex the company advertises this precision i.e. guarantees it.

That some watch can be regulated may be true but it requires many factors to come together a competent watchmaker being one strong requirement.

Very few people know of JLC, VC, PP, AP, etc and all their respective specs.

If we’re not talking about complications but precision and robustness the ones you listed are probably inferior to Rolex on the combination of these two factors.
Some of their models would be more precise, but very fragile compared to any current Rolex movement. Say it ain’t so?

What’s an average mechanical watch to you?
Do you define that by the average list price or some other metric?
