Excuse my ignorance, but is the mark 1 vs mark 2 a specific deviation or just an inside joke/play on words based on build date?

It's an actual evolution of the dial. A small detail as has always been the case with many Rolex watches. In this case the new one now called the Mk2 has the new Rolex designation for their new 32xx series movements, which is differentiated by the "Swiss Made" at the bottom now having a tiny Rolex crown in the middle of the words.
The Mk1 does not even though it has the 32xx series movement. Beyond this tiny detail the watches are 100% identical.

This tiny detail may or may not evolve to mean something in 20-40 years.

The Mk2 dials are starting to find their way into the system beginning this year apparently, which as a consequence would mean that for the first year maybe bleeding off a little into the second year, the SD43 was produced with a Mk1 dial.

Thanks for the detailed explanation, I thought maybe the red signifying marking was to be removed! I could see how this could be a small, but discernible, factor to collectors because this is the 50th anniversary Sea Dweller. I suppose one could argue only the mark 1 is the true 50th, as the mark 2's would technically be '51st anniversary' models.

Is the laser etching in the first post (sorry, I don't have enough posts to embed a photo/link) the crown insert for the mark 2 you are referring to or do you mean there is an atual crown printed on the dial itself, further spreading the words "Swiss" and "Made"?

...I just realized that was my first post on this forum. Fantastic close up photos Travelller!!

Edit: nevermind, I just read through the 17 page thread of everyone arguing about the dial.

Great review ! The best one...In fact, SD43 is an amazing watch. For the moment, far better than the 114060 (maybe we have to wait Baselworld 2019,...) cause more balanced, case lugs etc l’are more harmonious. And ...well...I love the fact that so-called « purists” don’t like it (“shouldn’t have a cyclop”, “too big”...). Sure, they wouldn’t have loved in 1968 the Daytona Paul Newman ! 🤣

I also got mine this year so Rolex (as ususal) cleared out their inventory (of dials) before making to move to the coronet

As a four/five digit guy, I never thought I could waer anything bigger than 40mm, but this one works great. Must be one of the best releases by Rolex in recent years?

Very helpful review. Just got mine last night. Seems like a great watch now and forever! I am learning more about it all the time.

Loved reading everyone’s thoughts as I waited for mine. All the anticipation was worth the end result!

Thank you for taking the time to collect the information and to assemble and add your thoughts and views, particularly, I enjoyed the variety of photos for a nicely comprehensive review. Bravo!

Question: When the second hand marker sweeps under the cyclops does it magnify to the equal size of the hour markers? This would be a very Rolex nod to symmetry and to understand why the second hand marker is the size chosen for manufacture.

Thx :) I can really recommend this one - accuracy is up there with my "reference" watch, my PAM 233 (+/1s daily, some days it's literally +0s )
The cyclops is a question of taste / preference but otherwise, the looks, proportions along with the accuracy make it a real winner

My pleasure to provide back to this awesome community
I like how you think but that's not the case here. In fact, the circular portion of the seconds hand is barely seen passing the cyclops and as it is closer to the cyclops' inner-edge, it will be less magnified. Bottom line, it's (still) much smaller than the hour-hand's (or markers, for that matter).

I struggled for months to decide which Rolex to get then finally settled on the SD43. After reading this review I am so glad I did. I’m next on the list and hopefully will have some first-hand experience soon. For those of you that already have this watch, how many have elected to remove the divers extension. Is this something I should or should not do and what would are the pros and cons? To answer the obvious question up front, I will Never use the extension

There are no cons to removing it if you don't need it. Virtually every SD43 owner who does not dive with it removes it. Fits much better and more comfortably with it removed. It was the first thing I had done when I got mine.
