The short answer; It was a 30th birthday present from me to me and a last major indulgence before having kids.
Longer story; I was coming up to 30 and my wife was asking what I would like to mark it. I knew I wanted a "thing" that would last forever rather than something consumable or an experience. We talked through various options (at this point she didn't know I was a WIS, I had a Seamaster but she just saw that as "James' watch"). It soon became clear that the "thing" I wanted was a watch and when I started doing some research, I was pleasantly surprised that a pre-owned Rolex was in the sort of price range I was thinking of. Until that point, I had always thought of Rolex ownership as the preserve of others. A bit more discussion and it became clear that in fact all I wanted was a Rolex. Fortunately, I was able to find one I fell in love with at a reasonable price but even then I agonised a bit. I couldn't quite stomach spending lots of money on a watch when I already had one very high end one on my wrist. Again my wife talked me round. She pointed out that this would likely be the last big pre-kid indulgence so I should go for it. Also she highlighted that my 20s had been pretty turbulent. I had spend most of them struggling in the career doldrums getting by on temporary and short-term contracts. Finally I had landed a full-time permanent role that was using some of my education and skills and with the prospect of advancement. She suggested that buying the Rolex would be a nice way to mark the hopeful closing of that turbulent chapter. I pulled the trigger. Three days after I strapped on my Air King, my wife phoned me to tell me she was pregnant! |

I read an article in a magazine about the Submariner and looked at pictures and was sold. Off we go down the rabbit hole.

I was a 15 year old kid in 1968 with a part time job as a veterinary assistant. The doctor would remove his watch and wash his hands between patients. I was mesmerized by the blue and red bezel on his watch. He said "Son, that's a Rolex". He's let me put it on and I was smitten. I had no idea what a Rolex was, but I LOVED that watch (GMT pepsi) and would put it on every chance I got. Ten years later I bought one for myself. I have been a Rolex guy for 40 years.

I had been researching them for a while (owning some Omegas and Brietlings) and picked up my first Rolex and an AD. Datejust II. I totally fell in love with the brand. I sold it as then the obsession grew more and I was more into the sportier watches. (BLNR, Hulk, YM etc.)

I appreciate the art of watch making. These are tiny little machines we wear on our wrists that can operate in almost any harsh condition. They are beautiful, and they have a rich history.
Bottom line, I smile when I wear them |

I bought my first Rolex after going through major back-to-back orthopedic surgeries and rehabs. Just prior to my recovery and rehab, I purchased one of the "Wristwatch Annual" catalogs, no idea why. I was buying books to read prior to my surgeries. I somehow became interested in automatic Swiss watches late in life, I never even wore a watch before that. But I've always been a bit of a geek and a gadget guy.
I pored over that Wristwatch Annual during my surgery recovery and rehab, to pass the time and take my mind off the pain. Despite thousands of watches shown in the Annual at all price points, the Rolex line just spoke to me, fascinated me. If I had to sum it up:
I've never been disappointed in any Rolex that I've ever bought. They have all exceeded my expectations, and been more beautiful, rugged, and reliable in daily life than I ever anticipated before purchase. Not much else I can say that about. And I will never forget the feeling of wearing that first Rolex out for the first time. As my Ulster Irish mother used to say, "Why, I wouldn't call the King my cousin!" |

An amazingly small, precise MACHINE that is powered by a little tiny spring. If you think global warming or climate change is real then do your part. Get rid of all your electric devices.

It's a great watch and I like heritage behind Rolex. I'm also fond of Tudor. They are both great watches.

Wanted one for around 5 years before buying. Always thought it was too much money. After the first one you kind of become blahzey about it.
