I have only had the sky dweller since Tuesday but if you are going to pick one it is a fantastic option. I bought it for similar reasons. I am reducing my collection to three and the white dial sky checked the most boxes for me. I love it as much as the SD43 which is has made the cut as well. I honestly could have just these two and be completely fine but if I could only have one the white dial sky gets the slight edge for me personally based on my lifestyle.

SkyDweller as your only watch?

Since then, I have owned literally hundreds of watches on a buy them, wear them in rotation, and always be flipping something to buy something else basis.

Besides being financial lunacy, I haven't found that it makes me happier to keep flipping watches then it did when I had one trusted watch that I relied on every day.

Having said that, it might have to be three, since I do keep a cheap Isobrite for night time viewing with the Tritium Tubes, and there is a very strong appeal to owning a diver, which is most often the primary watch I've worn, in recent years that being the TT Blue Sub.

So I'm thinking of one do it all watch. I don't dive, but I do go in salt water from time to time (sometimes even intentionally). I do like to be able to see the time in the dark. And it seems that I'm in different time zones on a pretty regular basis. I don't live in shorts and I never wear a T-shirt because I'm now an old guy and I like a collared shirt, even with shorts (unless I'm running).

Just love the blue dialed Sub, the no cyclops Sea Dweller, and even the new Sea Dweller 43, but my eye keeps coming back to a white dialed Sky Dweller.

Thought the President 36mm would be the one, thanks to my fascination with Red Adair, but I just don't seem to adjust to the smaller dial, plus the lume is long gone original tritium. And I don't want to wear any more 44mm plus watches. My Panerai, Omega POC and so on days are over. But so are my eyes, so a larger, legible dial seems like a good idea.

So that's the explanation, and a Patek Nautilus is out of my price range since I wasted so much money over the years flipping watches :-)

Of course the odds of me giving up the flipping addiction are small, but it's a thought :-)

At least you did not waste money for nonsense.. Love your post sir..

Initial thoughts at the start of the experiment

One day and one night into the new Sky Dweller, with the experiment being will it serve as an "only" watch, and here are some initial reactions:

1. The watch dial in white with the yellow gold surround is larger in appearance than any Rolex I've owned before, including the DSSD. In some ways this is great, as the "bling" factor in a Two Tone is definitely present. This watch has immense wrist presence for a Rolex.

2. While the chromalight indexes were fine, the hands need more, and I miss having a luminous second hand. Don't really need it if I wear my Isobrite Tritium T100 at night, but that defeats a "one watch" concept. In that respect my TT Sunburst Blue Submariner was superior.

3. Worry level is a bit higher. I worry more about banging the yellow gold bezel than I did about banging the ceramic dial on the Submariner.

4. Not sure yet about the choice of functions. It was great fun to set the month on the dial, and the date, and quick set hours. I travel a fair amount so this will be a great GMT function. My question is whether I will miss timing bar-b-ques with the Submariner dial (I never needed it for diving) more than I gain by being in different time zones. Too soon to tell. Bears watching.

5. Looks. Really a close call. If my Day Date had been 40mm rather than 36, then I think I appreciated the icon quality and solid gold of that watch the best. My wife definitely thinks the blue dial and bezel on the Submariner TT was the best, but she likes this as well. I'm torn. This is more "dress up" than my TT Blue Sub, probably sportier than my Day Date, and absolutely no one ever commented on any watch I've worn except maybe a couple of people who liked the Submariner. Of course I haven't been around many people yet in the Sky Dweller, so no real data there.

6. Impression of value. I'm probably drinking the kool aid, but I think the new 9001 movement with both the Paramagnetic blue Parachrom hairspring and the high performance Paraflex shock absorbers, along with the really trick moving bezel magic settings seems like a lot more than getting a 3135.

On the other hand, the 5 mm easy adjust on the Sky Dweller isn't nearly as efficient as the Glidelock on the Submariner, and both are better than the Day Date.

And I suppose water resistance matters, but the deepest I'm going in the ocean is 20 feet. When my ears start to hurt, the depth rating on my watch no longer matters. So I suppose a double lock seal or a triple lock seal are about the same.

I've also given some thought to combining bling in a solid gold blue submariner, figuring that whatever watch I buy next likely lasts the rest of my life, so why worry about money.... But I'm not convinced that a diver's watch should be solid gold. Seems beautiful but wrong somehow. Now a SS with the "bluesy" sunburst dial and bezel would seem more right, and the TT worked just fine for me for years.

So those are initial impressions. What do you all think??

You are probably right. What is your "one and only" if you had to have one?

BLUE SKYDWELLER - Captain America is my favourite Rolex in my collection! I would be happy with it if it was my only Rolex!

Rehaut 18kt Stainless SUBMARINER Silver Serti Two Tone

Looking to spend 11-12K for this watch, probably never worn, am I crazy? Always wanted one, I am good with the engraving triple R.

Would prefer to get the Blue Sky-Dweller for the suggested retail price of $14,400.00, but cannot find one.

So, purchase a 10 year old beautiful two tone submariner for 12K or purchase a new Sky-Dweller for 5-7K more than its suggested retail price?

I think any watch can be your only and daily. If you love looking at it and enjoy it why not. SkyD definitely! it covers so many bases. If it were to be mine I'd go for the black dial.

To close this out...

I went back to the "Bluesy" in a brand new TT Ceramic 116613 LB. Expensive way to answer my own questions, but there you are. Thanks for the input, particularly as to reasons. All set.

For that I would need a chronograph, diving bezel and GMT. Two watches come close, the Planet Ocean Chrono has a bezel and stopwatch and the GS Chrono has a stopwatch and GMT (eight hands with the power reserve meter).

I haven’t found a watch with all three yet.

One and only? No. Far too much flash.

That said, its in my top 3 favorite watches.

These kind of questions make no sense. ANY model rolex can be a daily watch. That is what they are made for - EVERYDAY use. LOL
