It is significantly cheaper to produce SS as opposed to PM watches

there isnt 25k+ of gold in them and they are softer and essier to machine and finish. AD margins are the same percent of RRP but i would think that Rolex makes more on PM than SS from a production cost vs wholesale selling price comparison.

You need separate machines, highly secured areas because of PM, wasted PM, lower production, producing the PM etc.
There definitely isn't anywhere close to the PM as the price suggests, but it is significantly more expensive to make them.

Who spends six figures a year on watches? Unless you are a dealer....

At an AD here something similar happened... daytonas and gmts appeared in the display window.... then they disappeared and reappeared in the online display of a local grey dealer.... magic of the internet I suppose.

I think you underestimate watch guys. I certainly am not one of them, but they exist.

I can see the reasoning behind holding hot inventory back for the sake of pleasing a larger spender versus making a once in a while buyer happy.

You need to go to Harrods in London. Thats a saturday afternoon for some of these guys.

And its for one watch. Its astonishing and you cannot compete with that. They sell most major brands there too so its a big reason i never bothered building a relationship there. There is so much money floating around London, spending low six figures puts you well back of the most prolific collectors almost everywhere.

I was looking at a YG Daytona and asked about an SD42, which they "didn't have in stock." But in so many words was told one would become available if I purchased the YG Daytona.

So yeah, this is reality.

If I own an AD, then I would be selling to my VIP folks as well. Those are the folks I want to keep happy for life.

Blame Rolex HQ...not AD store.

I want a Ferarri at MSRP...but can't.... live moves on....

You would be very surprised to know, it happens..... and it’s not that uncommon in the world of watch collecting.

For some it could be one piece. I stick to Rolex and can tell you, 6 figures in one year has happened.

I think there has to be a balance between satisfying your loyal customers who are likely to buy multiple watches a year versus new buyers who are getting their first luxury watch.

I am planning on getting my first Rolex next month and have found sourcing the specific model I want to be difficult, even though it's not a sports model.

If the watches in high demand are in the display cases, then it implies they are on sale for everyone. Control of who is the buyer is eliminated. That list would include the most important clients of the AD, new and first time buyers and the opportunistic flippers.
By keeping these models in the vaults, control of who it is on sale for becomes simple.
A big city AD probably gets dozens of requests weekly for rare references.
Maybe someday, the marketplace returns to normalcy.
I believe that is unlikely.

That's how I bought my DSSD-Blue, White SS Daytona C and BLNR. I have great AD who I communicate with regularly.
