It would only be possible if somebody had something I desired or lusted after. Even then, don't think I would feel upstaged...maybe envy. I have never liked a single AP watch or Genta designed watch for that matter. So whether I'm wearing my EXPII or solid gold Sky-Dweller. It's not possible for anything AP to upstage me.

I do love checking out peoples watches though. I guess I am a 'wrist-peeper'

Not sure why anyone would feel upstaged if they are content with the watch they have. My favourite watch is the Submariner Date. Closely followed by the GMT Master II BLNR. If I’m wearing either of those (not that I care) but I wouldn’t feel upstaged by anyone. In fact, if I was a millionaire I’d be content with those two watches.

My thinking is along the same line: I could get a more expensive watch than a GMTII but it would be more fragile one. Thus actually less utility, wrist time, and thus less emotional attachment.
But I nevertheless got a WG to have a joker in my sleeve for those who cares.

I've never really felt upstaged maybe because l am passionate over my collection. My Rolex AD just had a reveal party at a cigar bar to showcase their new Seiko line and there were some guys rocking some nice stuff and a few brought their collections with them. One wearing a platinum Daytona and another with his WG DD, plua a Zenith Daytona as well. It felt more like a commeraderie between us. I was wearing my week old Blnr thanks to my AD and feeling pretty good too.

Just to make it clear, I know what I have at home and I really do believe that the gold submariner is one of the classiest watches Rolex makes. When I started the discussion in the neighborhood watering hole (almost all there are local) I explained I collect watches. I didn't even mention the watch I was wearing. I just thought hearing the story behind his watch (there was one) and seeing the Gold Sub in the wild was a great experience. Whether we call it outclassed or just seeing something we consider exceptional doesn't really matter. It's just semantics.

I think this goes without saying. Another saying is that pride goeth before the fall.

After all, a GMT - the object of his admiration - could easily have been misidentified as “package envy” as observed by a casual onlooker...

Absolutely. Not certain why so many are intent on making judgments about the language which was chosen and the implications. I don't believe anyone here who spotted an exceptional watch in the wild felt threatened. I know I didn't the couple of times it's happened. Another time was at the health club. A fellow was wearing a Pt DD. I mentioned what a great watch it was and again got a discussion of its story and how he happened to have it. He insisted I try it on.

I think for many their exquisite watches stand for something significant in their life about which they enjoy telling the tale.

I recently acquired my first Rolex (BLNR) and I am super proud of it. Recently, a client comes into work with my grail watch, a DD - 228238.

I mentioned to him I admired his watch and without hesitation, he took it off and told me to try it on. I was in disbelief and in admiration of such an iconic Rolex.

One day, I told myself, one day; but not today :)

Just out of interest.
Reverse the situation. Does anybody here feel a slight smugness when their watch upstages a watch that has been "wrist-peeped" and is the owner's opinion, considered better.
Certainly if the "wrist-peeped" watch appeared at first glance to be a "bells & whistles" piece, but instead turns out to be a fake.....

Hey, there is always some collector who has something rarer/more desirable than you. I just enjoy the pieces I have and happily smile for the other guy.

On the flip side, there are guys who would kill to have the pieces you have! So enjoy it in good health.

On the flip side, som

I’ll admire other people’s watches or good fortune. I’ve never felt inadequate or ashamed. Plus for all they know this might be your lowest valued watch that you own.

I was in Hong Kong last week and it seems that everyone including the taxi drivers had a sub on. I had my BLNR and felt a little different. Then in multiple occurrences in the elevator of the Cordis Hotel where I stayed in Mong Kok and walking around Harbor City in TST you'd see RMs, PM APs and PM Pateks and then I felt like a local!

Not a huge thing, but a little suprise. My son was in invited to a birthday party. When I went to pick him up I noticed the mother blasting the party was wearing a 38(?)mm date just. Pretty sure my AK was unnoticed.
