I suggest you look at the "new" DJ41 models. a few dials to choose from, 2 bezel and bracelet options!
I agree it can .. and even though it has the date complication I could add that the SubDate could also be thrown in there. Many consider it a faux pas but I wore it on my wedding day. For the OP wear what you like or feel comfortable in.

Agree 100%. I wore my 16610 when I was married with my tux. Color scheme was black and silver so blended in nicely. It’s not a that it is a dress watch that made it work because it’s certainly no dress watch. But it was the fact that the 16610 (and older references) were so unassuming and non-blingy they simply disappeared into the overall look. We in this forum know what they are, but the style is extreamy understated. The same can’t be said for these newer references though I respect the craftsmanship of the newer references.

A Sub isn’t born with “UMPH”, nor will it acquire it over time. I would get a GMT again and retire the Sub to the watchbox for now. It will be a good rotation piece over time.

If you need an open spot in the box, maybe move out one of the other box-dwellers.

seems like you need a dress watch next to your Sub. That is a watch on leather strap. DJ isn't a dress watch, its a sports watch, like all watches on bracelet.

Sounds like you are considering something two tone; however, that seems to add bling vs. dress. Look for a simple 3 hander on a leather strap. IMO, steel and/or gold bracelets don’t work in dress situations.

You are on the right track,36 mm with a suit or long sleeves is magic. You might even want to consider a DD. If you want to stay in the sports realm but have a bit of luxury pop, then Bluesy. Good luck.

I think your sub is perfect for all those occasions.

But it sounds like you need more bling. I'd add a BLNR, Daytona or BLRO - but of course those are all in short supply.

You need at least a 2 watch collection. Its hard for any one watch to be all things all the time.

My suggestion is SS sky dweller.... white, blue (impossible to get), black dial would work.
I wear my white dial sky dweller for formal occassions

Why not grab a dress watch if you think the Sub works fine with everything but a suit? Contrary to some posts in this thread, gold with a suit is tacky. I wear my BLNR with a suit but only because I don't own a nice dress watch yet. I'm eyeing a JLC Annual Calendar or Moonphase down the line.

I say keep the Sub, get a dress watch.

Some recommendations:

Cheap: Nomos or Montblanc.

Midrange: JLC or Zenith.

High-end: Blancpain, Vacheron or Breguet.

Super high end: Patek Phillipe or ALS.

It's a $7K watch; no one is going to look down on you for wearing it with a suit!!!

If you don't think a Submariner looks good with a suit, a GMT isn't going to look any better. Personally, I wouldn't wear any Rolex with a suit. I recommend adding a Calatrava to your Submariner.

Keep the sub and add something on a leather strap for the times that you dress up. Not sure on your budget if you kept the 114060 and added, but you can find many options in the <2k category. Longines, Nomos, Montblanc, all come to mind with nice, thin dressier options in that price category. In Montblanc you can even find watches with 18k bezels for less than 2k if you go the grey market route. Good luck!

I understand where you’re coming from. I definitely can’t pull off wearing a sub with a suit even though a lot of people can, so I love wearing my dj for the rare occasions I dress up. However, my sub gets most of the wrist time since I dress casual.

You should definitely add a dj or something with pcl back in your collection.

Get a BLNR on jubilee, it’s my favorite and never gets old.

Just because it’s wxpensive, doesn’t automatically mean it’s appropriate.

I’ve seen some very expensive shirts (more than some of my watches!) where I have no idea where they might be appropriate...

It's not the actual watch that is boring... it's just the look you see too often. So I think people get hooked on the idea they want the real thing. They get the real thing and then it doesn't quite meet expectations. It's great... the quality is better, it looks and wears better. But it's not visually that much different... So I wonder if that's part of the problem. This combined with the wait times that make people long for it and then feel underwhelmed upon receiving.

I think that's why I'm looking at the two-tone as my Submariner... it's more interesting. I'm leaning towards the Blue one at the moment but who knows what I'll end up with! I think that's the great thing with watches anyway, you have to have a journey to find the ones that sing to you. Each person likes different things, maybe the Sub just isn't for you.
Great response, really enjoyed reading your input, I think you had some good points that hit it home for me. I love the watch & its simple, classic, reliable as hell, but definitely not overwhelmed with Joy as I thought I would be when I was feverishly looking for it with no avail at all of the AD- I did decide to keep this and add to the collection-

Patek on the wrist, I like your thinking- I think I am keeping the Submariner, I know once I let it go, I will long for her to return, this is special watch, I bought it with my Lady and recall her face when I bought the watch-

I am keeping the Submariner guys, thank you for all the input you guys took the time to give, really appreciate it. Going to look at some dress options in leather straps & also get rid of my Baume Capeland S chrono & Oris, no need to have watches sitting in a box when they arent getting wrist time-
