Id do the trade over to the royal oak. The daytona wears small and a big grime with it having no date. You have a complete range of sizes with AP, all with date functions which overall make it a more daily wearer.

I’m not sure where everyone gets the idea the ROC gets scratched up easier or show scratches more than a 116520 Daytona. I have both and I think they are equally prone to scratches. If anything, I have more obvious scratches on the PCLs and polished part of the oyster clasp of my 116520 than on the bracelet of my ROC.

That said, Rolex makes perhaps the most comfortable bracelets in the watch industry and in my experience, the Rolex 4130 movement is more durable than the older F Piguet 1185. But if the ROC sits well on your wrist and you like the look of it, there’s really no substitute for a Royal Oak. I very rarely wear my Daytona after getting the ROC.

From many years of personal experience. It’s not that they both can’t scratch. Clearly they both do. Because the finish is so exacting on the Royal Oak it is much more obvious. This is also true on the Nautilis which is finished pretty much the same way. The curse of Gerald Genta.

Daytona does wear small in general imo and AP can be a scratch magnet. Knowing this I’d still go with the AP and be gentle w it. Good luck!

i for one have both the daytona ss black dial and the AP RO so i would say keep the daytona as you're daily beater and get the Royal Oak for evening leisures..

the daytona is very much sturdy as compared to the RO and wont show much signs of wear unless seen up close as compared to the RO.

I absolutely agree. I’ve had two Daytonas and now have a ROC 25860 after trading one Daytona for it. Scratches happened on both - PCL and clasp scratches happened on the Daytona as well as bracelet and bezel scratches on the AP. Legibility issues on the Rolex, but better WR. I vote for AP

That was just a example on a quick google search. I agree a OEM bezel is what I would install as well.

With my lifestyle, durability is everything. I'm very active and my watch needs to stand the test of time. I've decided to keep the unanimously more durable Daytona and pursue another tool watch for heavier wear and tear. I don't want to be scared to wear a watch with fine finishings as watches, in my opinion, are meant to be worn. Thanks for all the input as it was very helpful in making the right decision for me. I wouldn't buy any high value watch if I was worried about scratches and patina. What's the point?

The two are very different watches - a 15202 is much 'simpler', but for me there is a lot more to it.

I have both a Daytona white dial and a 39mm ROC blue dial. The AP gets a lot more compliments and is more comfortable for me to wear. That being said the Daytona has appreciated a lot more from the MSRP i paid for it in 2006 than my AP has since i've bought it used.

I traded my black dial Daytona c for the blue dial jumbo and absolutely love it! I wore the Daytona everyday and I now wher the 15202 daily without issue. As far as value I think the 15202 blue dial retains and will appreciate as much as the Daytona. It’s an awesome watch

I have been considering a 1996 36mm 14800st AP. I have considered only this week a deal on a Daytona (similar vintage - early 2000).

Utimatley the AP (any AP) is a better watch than (any) Rolex in terms of horology and fit / finish.

Furthermore it is a much more special (rare) watch in terms of numbers manufactured and spotting in "real life".

All watches will get dings and scratches. Thats the patina of life. A watch loved and worn well. It has a beauty of its own and reflected in the crazy market for unpolished vintsge pieces.

Buy an AP. Enjoy it. If it does not sing to you... the world is full of Daytonas and you can go back there easy enough

If you hadn’t started out by saying the reason for the switch is that you’re afraid of scratching the bezel, I’d have said AP.

However, a Royal Oak is not the watch you choose when you’re looking for a scratch resistant bezel. You almost can’t make a worse choice if that’s your primary criteria (unless it’s a ceramic or rubberclad).

While I have a Zenith Daytona, I was looking for a suitable panda dial chrono. I was torn between a white gold daytona panda or the 26331ST. After much deliberation and, the prospects of having two daytonas, I went for the AP. Honestly, the watch is miles ahead in terms of overall craftsmanship than any Rolex. I have many rolex and love them all but, this AP is a whole other level.
