Tony, great pic.
Used one just like it as a screen saver awhile back. Really a work of art. Too bad they have grown so expensive. |

Best in-house movement chrono?
Why, a Breguet Transatlantique Type XXI, of course. Beautiful dial, bit under 42mm, flyback function, day/night subdial, wears AWESOME on strap or bracelet, keeps better time than my gym quartz watch and when you wind it... oh, when you wind it you can TELL the quality of the movement. Another neat thing about it is the minute chrono hand is not on the sub-dial, but also in the center, right behind the chrono second hand. Finally, the XXI's hold excellent value, if you ever choose to sell it.

If what you want is a Chrono with an In house movment you have several choices depending on your budget:
On the high Range: Lange Datograph, which was already discussed here, and it is considered by many as one of the finest Chronos out there specially when it comes to the finish of the movement. PP Nautilus Chrono, it comes in SS, it should be in the same price range as the Datograh but I can ashure you this watch should be a great investement since it carries the first Chono movement made by Patek the 28-520. JLC Duometre a Chronograph, won several technical prices for their dual wing caliber basically 2 movements powered by same escapment. On the High - Mid Range: AP Offshore, it now has an In house movement previously it used to be a modified JLC I think. JLC Extreme, Combines Chrono and World time functions, all JLC have in House Movements, actually several high end watches used to have a JLC movement. IWC New Davinci Chrono, also new Pellation in house movement. Zenith, They Use the infamous El Primero Caliber which used to be inside Daytonas before Rolex came up with the GReat 4130 movement! Panerai 275 Chronomonopulsante, 8 day power reserve, GMT and Chrono Functions In house Movement. TAG 360, first automatic Chrono watch to measure 1/100 of a second. As far as other Brands: Vacheron Overseas uses a Frederic Piguet 1185/6 movement which is one of the best Chrono movements out there, so nothing wrong on it not having an in house movement. Breguet XXI uses a Breguet 582 which has a Lemania Base I think. Breitling, Bell and Ross, Panerai (non manufacture), TAG and many other medium ranged watches use Eta Valjoux Base, which does not mean they are bad, the valjoux is a tried and true workhorse. Good luck with your decision.

what I dont like about an expensive watch without an in-house movement is that I am going to pay thousands of dollars for a case and a strap, becasue the movement in it can be found in an 800 dollar watch, eta based movements dont have anything wrong IMHO, they are in fact very good, but heyan 800 dollar watch and an 8000 dollar watch with the same movemtn kinda feels like a bentley with a GM engine.

They are two superb watches and again the movement in the 1815 is stunning. I nearly bought one in W/G. But decided against, only because the sub dials were a little to small for me to read. But a friend of mind, who also likes his watches, has just bought one in R/G. I hope to see it, in a couple of weeks time.

Love the breitling and what they stand for, and the fact that they are not charging thousand's for they'r outsourced movement watches, but I find the dial's to busy for my taste, and I am not crazy about the bezel's either, but your chronomat has a beautiful blue tone and the dial doesnt seem so busy, still don't like the bezel.

I'd liken the watch movement thing to the motorcycle engine thing more. Rotax, a company that makes motorcycle engines, makes them for BMW, Aprillia, Buell, and even some scooters. Basically, for bikes of all shapes, makes, price levels. It's not just the engine that makes the bike great but the whole thing put together, and for that, it's all up to the bike manufacturer itself. How it mixes the components together to make a well built whole.
That said, Rotax will make an engine that suits the bike company's needs for a particular model. And this is pretty much the same for watch movement manufacturers. ETA, the largest, makes one-off movements for a bunch of premier companies. And oftentimes, you'll see companies just getting the base caliber and making improvements on that. This cuts down the cost by a considerable amount, not because they're inferior but because of sheer economies of scale. And let's face it, ETA (and a lot of other manufacturers out there) can be as reliable and accurate as something from Audemars Piguet or Patek.
