Why do they want to differentiate?

People buy tech for function. Sure, there’s more cachet in having a “premium” device from Apple or Samsung but ultimately if the gadgets they make didn’t actually work as well as cheaper products, far fewer people would buy them. By contrast, nobody sane buys a Rolex purely for its ability to keep time, which is the only thing it shares in common with a wearable computer, aside from being wrist-mounted. People buy Rolexes because (amongst other reasons) they are built to last decades; can be passed on as heirlooms; are nice to look at; are marvellous in the true sense of the word in terms of their internal mechanics and act as quite powerful, globally recognisable status symbols which signal something about the wearer (for good or for ill and whether the wearer likes it or not). None of these factors apply to the Apple watch. The two things are simply appealing to completely different markets. I therefore can’t see how wearable tech is any threat to Rolex, though it’s a massive threat to quartz and low-tier mechanical watches. Rolex don’t need to chase Apple watch wearers, the wearers will come to Rolex (and other strongly branded luxury watches) as they get older and richer. Rolex is selling every watch it makes; I see no imperative for them to drastically change the Sub. |

Apple watch is an especially huge threat to cheap to mid-level quartz watches (looking at you Citizen). It's somewhat less a threat to Seiko or other low-tier mechanicals. But his point remains so true. Rolex has zero need to chase those who want an Apple watch. Differentiate, don't chase. Very few people think "Sub or Apple watch, Sub or Apple watch." |

I doubt seriously they’d change much beyond updating the movement. They’re not going to tinker with the looks much and whatever they do it’ll take a watch nerd to notice it.

I think the maxi case come about for a reason and it probably won’t change, I won’t polish up my 50 year old subs but my new maxi case sub could be polished every five years without such a problem.

Fully agree. Unless they don't do anything spectacular like +100h power reserve there is no noticeable difference in use.

Yeah, if they made an anniversary dial with red text and only made 5,000 pieces or something they could instantly charge another $995 or something for it and sell out in 2 hours. They'd bring $20k secondhand.
They could do that. As long as they don't do it every year I don't think they would risk looking too much like Omega.

My AD's Rolex buyer is expecting some new GMTs. He is confident but always couches his comments in the context of ".... but when it comes to Rolex, who really knows?"

Why keep on offering new models if you can’t supply the current one.

They choose not to supply it - there is a difference - Rolex doesn't think like Apple - Apple will make as many iPhones as they can sell. Rolex only wants to sell X per year of each model, so when X is completed, they just stop building - the forced scarcity of every model means that the market stays stronger for a longer period of time on their products.

Perhaps they will introduce a brand new line of Submariner called the No Date

I'll keep holding out hope for 41mm and slimmed down lugs. Until that happens, not interested...

Thinking bout getting a Sub (no date as I don't like warts) but the "old" movement holds me back. If it gets an updated one with a 70h power reserve, I could see myself placing an order.

The movement is changed from 3135 to 3235 and their equivalent without a date. Supercase and size remain unchanged. Impossible to get at retail for mere mortals of course. The LV Hulk lives on.

Would love to see a Sub without the cyclops. The previous Sea Dweller was nearly perfect.

I really wish they release them at the same time. It's the no date I'd be interested in.

I agree but it has taken me until 2017 to appreciate the changes, it’s pretty much the perfect watch, especially in black, you could wear the maxi case Submariner all your life.

Yeah, but we know they don't do that. I was surprised to see them release the new GMT in all three metal combos (PM, TT and SS) all at once. But it was still only a three-model release, and new ones at that. The rest of the line will trickle out over ensuing years. I don't see why they would abruptly alter that pattern with the Sub. That doesn't automatically mean they wouldn't prioritize the no-date for a refresh, but they certainly haven't given an indication of that with how they've handled the current model. It's also only seven years old, whereas the Dates range from eleven to nine.

I think for a TOOL watch the Sub super case lugs are still a little too slim, they should make them a little thicker still to make the case even tougher and then it will be perfect!
