You handle this by kindly asking the flight attendants to move you, quietly. If they can’t do that, handle it after the fact and the airline will refund you money... no reason to make a scene and someone feel bad

Some seats cost more, and with it you get a certain type of more. I agree ultimately that if you fly peasant class as I do that you will have to tolerate certain things. However, that doesn't mean you can spill over into my space or put your extra belongings under the seat in front of me because all your space is used up, where do I put my feet, especially if I paid the extra money for economy plus. There is so much I will have to deal with, sure, but a person spilling over into my space one third the way in is unacceptable. Business class on some more regional flights isn't that much more than economy plus on international flights, is it ok for people to encroach unto your personal space. There is a monetary factor to the seats therefor I am entitled to a certain amount of personal space. And furthermore, it's just common sense and common decency to respect others. If you are obese, not my problem, but you may have to put more of an effort in respecting space on a plane or by two seats since you are two people. |

It has happened to me a couple times over my 30 years of flying. I just deal with it. I don't like creating a problem over something like this.
I absolutely would not agree to raising the arm rest though. |

We get exit row seats for extra leg room, but it does not help laterally. They do not cost nearly as much as first class. My wife is very petite and when obese people sprawl next to her, they breathe a sigh of relief.
I have had weight issues (fair shape now) and when I am tight in my airplane seat or seatbelt, I know it's back to dieting time. |

People got bigger, seats got smaller. Leg room diminished.
How's that for responding to the needs of the public. The crap we put up with from corporations is astounding. |

I fly BA a lot. BA got worse because people would rather pay less and fly easy jet or ryanair. Less legroom, more seats was what they had to do. With out them in play i doubt it would be an issue as they did charge more typically. Now its much closer in price and legroom and different seats was a sacrifice Business class in club europe is what economy class was as far as legroom a few years ago. Economy is smaller too

Agreed. People can complain all they want, but until they stop looking for the cheapest flights this is the kind of service economy fliers can look forward too.

Plus the fees are not tied to the airfare and thus the FAA and airport taxes that go toward making sure your airport and flight operate safely are not taxed resulting in less money for essential services. everything about airlines these days, it just wrong on every level. And they keep merging and getting bigger so you have less choices so its only getting worse.

And please don't make this a free enterprise argument. These companies collude all the time on price, routes etc. And make great profits. We have become conditioned to accept anything corporations say. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/c...worst-airline/ |

In my hometown Allegiant came in and they are terrible. Both delta and united cut flights by 50% as everyone flew Allegiant because it was cheaper. Their planes are absolutely terrible, old pieces of junk. technically air worthy, but i wouldn't fly them. They also fly to weird regional airports and not main urban airports so its not even convienent anyway. Price is the only explanation you can see adjusted for inflation a typical plane ticket is way less money than in the 1970's for example. You also had more room

I'm sure they do. But the airlines would put in slave ship seating if they could get away with it.
I get it. Corporations are designed to make a profit. BUT the government/the people are there to make sure they don't cross the line. Where it all goes south is if the government is bribed to do what corporations want instead of what is in the interest of the people. YMMV We can agree to disagree. |

All business class routes dont do well as there are not enough people to fill an entire plane at that price. That would be hugely profitable if they could make it work.

If there was a belief that there was a larger market where airlines could charge more and be more profitable they probably would have probably found it by now. Pretty certain anyone with any sort of business sense would opt to provide more in the exchange for better profits. Cheaper is what the majority are willing to pay and cheaper with no amenities and poorer service is what you get.

even the BA A319 that flies London city (which is in the middle of london) to JFK doesn't do that well and its only got 30 seats or something like that. And you do customs clearance in Ireland so you land at JFK as a domestic passenger. Its non stop on the return i think, stops in ireland going to refuel. Should work great, but it doesn't.

Cathay Pacific has a real premium economy product -- but if you're flying from to or from the USA, it's still pretty miserable because you can't recline flat. Good for shorter flights though.

its my biggest pet peeve. So much so that i made it clear on the first date i ever had with my wife that if she wants a bite of my dessert she needs to order her own. Ok maybe the second date, but it was early on for sure.

I hate it when people ask me if they can try my food. I often ask people if they want to try my food, but when they’re the one who asks.... drives me nuts.

I think it’s all comes down to how you handle yourself. If you yell out “ I can’t sit next to this fat guy for 5 hours he stinks” prob gonna be a rough encounter but if you calmly grab a flight attendant and explain the situation they might have a seat open for you and will work with you. I’ve had it happen to me 1 time in over 100 flights and it was almost an Instagram viral video but that was only 1 time and I legit lost it after hot breath on me for 4 hrs being as calm as calm gets I reached my boiling point finally spoke up n he leaned the other way but that’s literally all they could do for me as the flight was full. Somebody drooling on your shoulder and blowing hot tooth decay breath in your face will make any grown man snap. It was even more space seats n mint from there on out and I haven’t looked back.

I can’t help myself from posting as the timing is too perfect. Just boarded a cross country flight and the gentleman next to me needed the full seatbelt extension. Luckily I’m up front but the struggle would be real in the back.
I have found that the old adage about honey and vinegar has served me well. In the case of the article, assuming it’s not BS, the gentleman that was overweight likely already felt extremely self conscious. No need to embarrass him publicly- quietly ask for assistance and if it’s not possible, have an extra drink, breath deeply and remember you will have a funny tale for the fellow travelers. |

I'd be more concerned about the atomic bombs the overweight gentleman would most certainly drop by my side during the flight.
