Why all the hate for engraving??? Pretty ridiculous. OP, if you want an engraving on YOUR watch then make it happen. I have a GMT that I wore during one of the biggest events of my life.....it will be engraved. Period. And if I ever need a new case back, then I will get one. No big deal.

Enjoy the the Submariner. Once it’s passed down, that person would know the sentimental value of it. No need to engrave it.

I wouldn’t do it. We all think we’re going to keep watches forever. We very rarely do.

That said, I bought my son a BB58 for his 21st and got that engraved. But I did that to make sure he doesn’t sell it!!!

Don’t engrave now, perhaps get it engraved when you pass it down.

Great call on the engraving, gerobak. I've been wearing my engraved Rolex (from my parents) for over 30 years! (& anytime I wear a different watch I kind of feel like I am cheating on it.)

This watch will mean a lot for me.
It will be my first rolex, actually the first rolex that will be owned by my family tree. I actually want to buy this for my children, so I can inherit this for them.

I am thinking to engrave it <LastName>'s First or "Only sell, in case of emergency"
who knows... they mess up in the future, they could sell the watch to prolong their lives for couple months or days

Question for you guys: How much engraving will reduce the resale?
I need serious answers guys for this could be the life and death situation for my children!

Meanwhile... Here is my current Tissot that will not be forgotten!
The Paul Newman Daytona was engraved with a note from his gifting wife, and that watch did ok at auction!

I love this idea. For me, I’d MUCH rather buy that watch than one with someone’s initials/name on it.

My wife and I have several watches with engraved casebacks. 10 and 20 year anniversaries got some nice memories added. It makes it more special to us.

If in 50 years my nephews want to sell them then the caseback can easily be replaced.

I’m not a fan of engraving, but you can always get a new case back if you do engrave then decide to sell.

If you want to discourage future generations from selling it out of the family tree, engrave “Display Only, Not for Sale”.

Any ideas on cost of getting a 116610 caseback and whether an AD would be able to get one..?

It’s like the beginning of a bad juju movie. I am definitely not buying a watch with that inscription.

Got this done on the DJ 41 my father gave to me, figured it’d make it that much more special to my children when I’ll end up giving it to one of them.

Engraving the backcase of a watch may affect the value of the piece by few hundred dollars if it will end up in a stranger's hands but it will hugely increase its sentimental value if it will be passed to a family member. I willl highly recommend it.

I wouldn’t engrave a watch. IMHO, the person inheriting it should already know what it means to them. And I especially wouldn’t deface a watch with an engraving that says to sell it (for whatever reason), albeit at a reduced price because it’s engraved with instructions to sell it.

When I depart this big blue marble and my kid gets my stuff, I’d prefer to not put conditions on any of it, as if I can somehow control them from the grave. Let them deal with the stuff and live their own life. Sell it or keep it. I’ll leave it completely to them to determine if they feel a sentimental attachment to a particular watch they want to keep.

But I respect others with differing opinions. Many people engrave their watches. To them, it adds something. To each his own.

i'm with you on the selling condition thing. I don't like such idea to be at the back of a watch I got from my father but instead I would love something from him, something that puts a smile on my face when I read it.
I still have many things that belong to my dad, most valuable items are his books "hundreds of them" When reading those book and find a handwritten paragraph or a note written by my dad my heart jumps. The book that already is so valuable to me becomes even more dear to my heart.
Unfortunately, my dad never wore a watch but he made sure I learned to tell time by the age of 5.
