I’d say yay for the Platona and move quick while it may still be possible to get a decent discount somewhere. Good chance you’ll get used to the weight if you wear it daily and if you don’t you’re unlikely to be out of pocket after a trade/swap/sell.

It sounds to me like whatever else you’d buy would always be compared to this. In a ‘what-if’ kind of way.

Good luck!

Alright, I'm going to go to the AD this weekend and have a frank discussion with them about pricing. I have a terrible poker face and they know I want the watch.

Go to as many ADs as you can and let them know that you’re shopping around for the best deal. The first AD will ask you how many other ADs you’ve tried and what offers you’ve had. I’d probably try and talk around that in generics by saying you’ve seen a few and had some reasonable offers but bring the discussion round to the ballpark discount you’re looking for, highball them first before they get s chance to lowball you.

Also a discount may be (partially or fully) in the form of also being able to pick up a hot model or two at MSRP.

I also want to scratch this itch.

What’s bugging me is that i could have gotten this at a decent discount years ago. Now, just a nominal discount.

Good thing the itch isnt that itchy. I can still take it.

I'm pretty sure it is, diamonds under the crystal don't have nearly the lustre as on the bezel so they are quite subtle most of the time, unless you angle the light just right to see their full sparkle for yourself.

Well that is true of a whole host of watches now, and at least this can still be bought for a discount, there are other PM watches that are at stiff to eye-watering premiums now that had none at all two years ago.

It simply has to be a dud! Look at the 9 questions and answers, it is a complete joke.

Rotating bezel? I don't think so.

so what, chance it; if its not right - send it back to amazon. Or dispute it with your CC company.

Your covered, if its not the right item.

Now.... If it wasn't fulfilled by amazon, no way in heck would I give it a go.

Well it’ll be the exact opposite wearing experience to your 5712 That could be a good thing or a bad thing IMO.

Also, if I’m spending that much money on one piece, I’m going to want to wear it often, so that would give me pause. I’d want to be 100% certain before purchasing as you will find it tougher to move it for what you paid, if it doesn’t work out.

Lastly, I guess I’m an outlier but I prefer professional references in SS (truer to their heritage in my humble view). When I think PM watches, I think dressier options like the DD40 or other brands.

Having tried 3 varients of PM Daytona (yet to try the Oysterflex) I see the added contrast the ceramic bezel brings. Oh let’s not forget the dial and I haven’t seen one in the flesh yet!
I would seriously consider trying to negotiate a price as the AD naturally wants it sold. You sound completely bewitched by it and that is a great sign that if you get it for the right price you won’t ever want to let it go

You're not alone here, I'm with you on this Brian. I could probably handle an OF Daytona, but truly the tool watch isn't all gold or platinum.

That being said, it sure is a beaut.

Platinum Daytona Itch

Alright, so I figure I should follow up on this thread.

Went to the AD on the weekend and played around with the Platona in their case for a good while, all over a coffee and great banter with the AD staff.

The heft is really something special. I recently had the luck of trying on a sized Platinum DD40 (similar wrist size to mine), and I don't think it's a hurdle in the long run. I am sold on the beautiful combination of ice blue and chestnut brown.

However, what does catch me is the value proposition of the Platinum Daytona. Pricing seems rather inflexible even with the AD I have a great relationship with. I find it difficult to justify the added cost on top of my 116519LN WG OF Daytona, as nice and beautiful as it is. That money could buy me a full Platinum DD40, or a DD40 in any other metal with lots of change to spare. Now, I know talking value isn't really that great of a justification, after all we are talking about watches that have little intrinsic metal value. I found gold a bit difficult to justify, but eventually overcame it, but Platinum is a bridge too far for me at this time.

I am already over the moon with my 116519LN, and I'm not sure all that extra money would give me enjoyment commensurate with the cost.

So the end result is I'm going to shelve the idea of a Platinum Daytona for now. But let's close with a couple of pictures:

I can understand, the OF is such a nice piece that the Platona is not so much more for the premium.

What about keeping the 116519 and adding the DD40 platinum?

I think a DD40 is in the cards for me in the near future. Not sure it'll be the Platinum, I might be going for the YG motif that I've had my eyes on for a while too.

There's your answer. The Daytona on OF is a such great watch and leaves nothing on the table. Enjoy it.

It’s your money.. spend it the way you want.. me.. It’s pretty.. but I prefer to invest $58-75k USD than spend it on a watch that will NEVER be worth what I pay for it.

Oh well. To all the enablers on here - it's a lot easier spending someone else's money! If it wasn't me deciding to lay out the cash, I would be encouraging the OP without batting an eyelid. But the amount of money here isn't chump change to me, and I had to do what I thought was right!

Go for the Platona, just the feel on the wrist is out of this world. HEAVY

You did the right thing for you.
Platona is bewitching and I have personally rationalized all the ways I could consolidate my collection and free up funds to obtain one. I came close but when it came time to pull the trigger I couldn't. I thought about the significance to me of my different pieces and the enjoyment I get rotating them and decided I couldn't bare parting with them. I may change my mind but for now, I'm not mentally ready let go of some of my pieces to have the Platona.

I’ve owned my Platona for 3 years. I’m about to flip it because I just don’t wear it often enough. I also have the 116519 LN, and it gets 10x the wrist time. I’d keep the 519.

See, I’m exactly opposite. I owned a 116519 and I LOVED it. I did a partial trade and traded it away to help obtain my wife’s 118206 Platinum DD36. Then I replaced it with this:

Now, I really did love the 116519, but it doesn’t even come close to the enjoyment I get when I put my Platinum Daytona on my wrist. No comparison whatsoever. I do wish I would have kept the 519, but now momma is happy as well.
