Disclaimer, I’ve own my share of watches and can attest that there is no other watch out there that has as many compilations as an Apple Watch.

I think having a smart watch belongs in a rotation if you are a WIS. I can pay my groceries, turn on my lights, open my garage door, control the ambient temperature in my house - all on my wrist.

I just serviced 4 mechanical watches this past summer and the amount I spent could probably get me the next 4 iterations of the Apple Watch.

I think an Apple Watch has its place in a collection with the health benefits and its convenience factor.

I like my Rolex’s as much as my Apple Watch but I won’t wear both of them at the same time.



OP. I deal with attorneys on a daily basis and I think a Sub is a great watch for an Associate. Once he makes Partner, he can repay you with a PM for being a great father.

If he really wants a sub he can buy his own when he’s earned and saved the money himself. If my dad bought me a Rolex at 26 I wouldn’t have appreciated it as much as when I bought my own EXP1 after I already bought my own apartment, had been around the world and worked lots of jobs before I could justify buying a Rolex, plus the journey of learning and loving watches building up to finally getting and EXP1 and laying down that hard earned cash in the AD when the time was right...(it was my 30th birthday present to myself). that’s what buying a first Rolex is about to me.

I don’t personally like the idea of flicking a switch and suddenly getting a Rolex out of thin air... that has no meaning to a man. That’s what you do for your wife. It’s not like the father has worn the watch for 30 years thus having any sentimental value. Sounds a bit too contrived in the OP case

All the above is my opinion only, OP can obviously do whatever he wants with his money and spoil the kid and indulge/justify it to himself buying and wearing the sub in the interim.

Thankfully someone feels exactly the same as me. Nothing better than buying your first Rolex after grafting and saving your own hard earned cash. Then and only then will you truly appreciate the value and significance of what went into making that purchase........

Totally respect the OP wishing to make a significant milestone memorable for both parties but in this case it would appear the choice of gift means more to the OP rather than the recipient so seems on the surface quite frivolous. In context of all the ills in the world this really is a 1st world problem.

Maybe worthwhile establishing what the recipient would like so if it truly is an Apple Watch then get that. Ok that maybe be insignificant in a monetary sense but there will be plenty of opportunities in the future to assist your son with money - children (however old) will never stop costing you money

I bought a smart watch last year, I prefer round ones so went for a Samsung instead.

I think I managed to keep it for a week as I missed wearing a ‘proper ‘ watch.

I picked up an Apple Watch a few weeks ago for running and workouts.
It’s nice to be able to have just the watch and AirPods for a run. I don’t wear it any other time though. I still prefer having a real watch on while not working out. have he’ll be the same way. Especially if he’s suiting up for work

Gifted a new Sub to my son this spring when he graduated from a Navy speciality training school and before deploying to ROK DMZ. He was thrilled and wears it proudly in the service of his country!

Now his Samsung, et. al. digitals all sit in a box in storage.
