Its fun to read posters projecting themselves as the buyer within their economic station. For example, I'm not buying something that I can't wear. lol. You think someone who drops $17m on anything thinks like this?

If I bought the watch for 17M I would totally wear it every where, casinos, dive bars, etc. Hell some novice might even take a glance and say look at this guys beat up watch.

It was Rolex. Bought them publicity worth 100 million USD.

I must confess. I’m the one who purchased it. I purchased it for my butler to use as an egg timer. He makes the most splendid hard boiled eggs.

I think it was a total sham deal for Rolex publicity as well.
It was more about ABachs demonstrating his masterful marketing skills and for that I think he gets an A+; they had two rooms of full of eager bidders getting so excited to go up to X and less than ten seconds in, quashed the hopes of all assembled by getting to 10 million nearly instantly and taking the wind out of the wanna be owners who were ready to go up to maybe a few million and not letting anyone there "flex" in bidding wars.
New owner I think is Rolex or a billionaire collector we will really never know.

Why would Rolex buy it and never tell anyone? That's crazy. If they bought it they surely would display it or take it on tour!

Duh... It takes value away if they tell it's them.

You paint something as an moderately known artist.
Put it at auction.
Sells for 10 million.
Creates demand for your other pieces of art.

If you tell everyone 'Herp derp, it was me all along', i don't think people will take you seriously and value your art.

Maybe rolex bought it to restore it to a brand new watch. Change dial, case, strap, hands... :D

With the way that watch looks, whoever wears it can pretty much go anywhere and be safer than another guy who wears a blingy, gold Invicta. It's the ultimate stealth wealth.

Could also have been the under bidder too.

I’d wear it if I really liked it, after all, we’re not here forever.

Insane how many amazing pieces could have been bought instead. Steel 2499 etc. Only a pure investor or rolex would entertain the ask. A watch collector would rather buy several mint PN and vintage pateks etc for that coin me thinks.

I would not be surprised if the watch looses a lot of value. 17 mil is really nuts for a watch that cost $150 new. I could see it selling again in the low millions or less when the watch market corrects which it will.

Sure, because Rolex was hurting for publicity. I think the US government did the same thing with the moon landing. Staged it for PR.
