My strategy is flawed…. So how many of you actually purchase jewellery from your AD
I have built my small collection of varying brands from one dealer in the hope that it would lead to some flagship models.
You know, a Speedy here, TT DJ there, a Monaco, a no date in for good measure, then a Hulk if I’m lucky? So following a conversation yesterday with my own AD here in the UK, it appears to them that it doesn’t matter if you buy 2 gold Rolexes out of the window, a Heuer, an Omega and a Tudor, you will NOT get on their 'lists' for the big boys in the SS market unless you show them a little love with jewellery. I was told this by the AD branch manager personally. His words: “Anybody can come in and buy a Rolex or any watch for that matter, but what we look for with a buyer is somebody who supports us with our jewellery. If we ‘let’ you have a Hulk, Blue Sky-Dweller, Daytona or a Pepsi, we are effectively giving you a cheque for £7,000, so we would expect that back in kind from you” I struggle there because I’m 5 years married, and I have a wife who doesn’t care for diamonds short of her engagement ring. I only wear my wedding ring and I’m not Sly Stallone so a gold chain doesn’t really work for me. We all know the issues here with strangling the supply and creating this mess. The AD says they want the watch to go to collectors like us who won’t flip it, so they find us passionate nerds and strong arm us. I don’t think that sits right with me. Guys who have been fortunate enough to land the big pieces, what is your history? Did you land those pieces with just watches, multiple brands or diamonds? Really interested to know. |
