Aside from that, more and more staff at AD’s act like absolute amateurs, calling around, trying to jimmy up a frenzy about a watch that’s luke warm.

sorry, that is inducing.

the guy that I deal with is amazing. and a true blue sales guy. the entire store is filled with good, smart people.

and another AD I go into locally has an exceptional sales manager.

I am sure you have had some bad experiences. I am sorry about that. but what you say is most certainly a generalization.

Ok. I guess we’ll have to disagree on this.

I don’t consider retail ‘real’ sales. Clearly it is in the sense that someone is facilitating a transaction - you are buying something from them and they are supplying you with something. But it’s not real selling.

I could spend ages demonstrating what I feel is selling something to someone, but I’m sure you’re not unintelligent and I suspect you can imagine what I mean.

On the whole, the ADs I’ve ever dealt with have provided a mediocre experience. When I refer to the store associates as being monkeys, I mean their amateur tactics that are embarrassing - just like the account that the OP has given. But then, if they knew how to do business correctly and knew how to juggle clients despite not having enough inventory, they wouldn’t be in retail.

It sounds like you’ve managed to locate decent people and that’s great. But that’s a rarity.

but someday I hope you get a guy like Rick from Lee Perla.

this is a quintessential professional sales person. super knowledgeable, great follow up, very diplomatic, honest, open and fully transparent.

I am not always happy with what he has to tell me, but I always respect the heck out how he does it.

Think about every time you told a sales person you wanted to think about it. If they waited for everyone to get back to them they’d never sell anything. If you go shopping make sure you have authorization and money.

If a sales associate at an AD ever used such an elementary, corny, sales line like that on me, I wouldn’t buy a watch battery from them.

I have been in “proper sales” most of my career and maybe some would say they’re more retail staff than “sales people”. However I’d definitely say there is a bit of both.

They still have targets, still have to deal with objection handling and have basic skills in sales closure (although not always evident). They also need a pretty thick skin to deal with the dozens of daily enquiries on the same watches. Many staff have their own clients to look after and manage each of their expectations. Stores are target driven, in many cases stretching targets and this filters down to “sales assistant” level.

I’ve come across some awful AD staff but also some great ones who I’ve been very impressed with over the years.

In London I've found the good sales staff tend to move around or get poached by different brands, and we have a few of those who are well respected TRF members too, and it's nice to walk into a store and say, hey, didn't expect to see you in here, and then have a nice catch up chat, as nothing to see usually.

If I go shopping? She called me right after landing in DC after flying 5.5 hours with news of a watch she proposed, but as a Buy PM, get LV type deal, which she then backed off of. This was not me knocking down their door asking for something and then backing off.

Same SA called me back today, saying guy who it sold to (out from under me) decided when he came into the store to instead buy a DD40, so the CHNR was back up for sale and mine if I wanted it. I told her, “Sorry, but I didn’t like what you did last time, so I won’t be buying from you.”

Headed out the door of my hotel room, took elevator downstairs and started hailing a Lyft ride on my iPhone, when it rang again.

Same SA called back. This time she said, “Ok, if you buy this CHNR, we will get you the next Green Sub”. I said no again. She said the LV sub was coming in either today or tomorrow, and it would be mine if I bought the CHNR at full retail price. This time I said, “I’m really sorry, but I am not interested; not from your store.”

Well that took an unexpected turn.

I'm still surprised you'd consider paying MSRP on an RG CHNR just to get an LV Sub. What would you do with the CHNR then? Keep it or flip it at a loss?

Nice to stick to your principles but man, I’d keep the soon to be discontinued hulk and sell the gmt. Leave their Ad stamp in the sales ad lol

If you actually wanted the watches, you only hurt yourself. Of you don’t, no harm done.

Curious though, I’ve been told repeatedly that stores don’t know what they are getting until the order comes in. Interesting that she could confirm receipt of the LVC.
