Is this true? I saw a platona in a case for over two weeks at my local before it got sold.

Yes. There is a lot more people that can afford a <$10k watch, than people who can afford a $30k+ watch.

Price is not the factor. What's trendy is. And stainless steel is what's been trending, as your example has indicated perfectly.

Yet some of the stainless steel Daytonas are going on the gray market for above the price of two tone Daytonas, which I am told is not that hard to acquire, so how does that make sense?

Seems to be many people that can afford to pay 25K+ for a white dial SS Daytona. Less than 10K more and you can be into a WG model with nicer dial options.

Price and durability. Rolex became famous largely on making rugged tool watches that can go to the bottom of the ocean, the top of the highest mountain, in the fastest cars and across the skies. High grade stainless steel is not just more affordable, it gives the perception of being more rugged.

More classic, true to the heritage and more practical. Steel Sports are just better in every way. I’ve said it before, there is not a professional model I do not prefer in steel.

Price is the biggest factor, IMO. PM pieces cost 3x or more than their SS counterparts. Same watch, same functions, different material.

SS more Popular than PM. Why?

For me personally, when I think of a PM watch, I think of a delicate 35-38mm dress watch, perhaps in solid YG or RG. When I think of a tool or sports watch, SS is the only way to go.

Just a matter of preference and individual style above anything ...

Price. And SS is more durable.
It's also less noticeable, good for a daily watch.

Boy, those that can't afford PM make up some silly excuses other than just saying "I can't afford one" That is more understandable than the answers I see.

I remember when I couldn't afford one, my excuse was "I can't afford one"
no shame in telling the truth, making a stupid excuse "childish"

"Are you always conscience when wearing your gold Rolex out? Do you find yourself pulling your sleeves over your watch? I answer "yes" to both; unlike when I wear my Seiko I don't even think about it but it seems that I'm always trying too keep my gold Rolex covered.

Maybe it's a phase but I don't live in the most friendly city in the US.

I also noticed that a lot of cheap watches like 100-200$ watches are made of a material that looks so much like gold that everyone probably doesn't think our watches are real.

I would just appreciate your thoughts on this." Tape

My thoughts, Tape, are that you obviously should have bought a steel Rolex instead

I can afford one and kind of want one for reasons I can quite articulate...

Not a fan of yellow/rose gold although this could change. WG has issues with reagents like chlorine. I like platinum for a lot of reasons.

For me, the problem is more of design implementation. A platinum diver would be really cool but they are not made. And I have looked at numerous DD's but really prefer an oyster bracelet with micro adjustments and a fold-over safety clasp. If money was no object I could fit a Platona bracelet to a Platinum DD stick dial and call it good!

I don't like gold that much because of the weight, and will only buy a gold dress watch on strap as exception. I prefer SS, titanium or other metals/material that are light and comfortable.

Price and TT/PM models can be too obnoxious to be worn at work for some.

Strictly price for me. I can, but I'm not going to drop $30k+ on a watch that I will not wear that much.

We are in the middle of a sport/tool watch trend. Understated luxury.
