For me, it’s the only brand where I truly love (almost) every design they have created — they are so beautiful to me. From Sub to Datejust to Daytona and everything in between I think they are stunning designs. I cannot say that about any other brand.

I knew the Rolex name since I was a kid (probably from their marketing), and when I thought of a good watch I thought of Rolex. When I found out how much they cost, I was shocked and then pushed myself so that I could buy one. To me it was a symbol of hard work, commitment and dedication. Then I sold it because I thought it was too flashy. I would say that is when I started learning more about watches. And I decided that a special watch doesn’t have to be a Rolex. Later, I started missing the accuracy of Rolex and the “solid” feel of them. So I bought another one. And now.... As I learn more, I appreciate Rolex because they make watches that are very bulletproof Nice looking, bulletproof, don’t need a service very often, great accuracy for a mechanical movement, and they hold their value better than other brands (more the most part). So if you’re ever in a pinch, you can sell it and get back on your feet. |

Your success IS a special occasion! Last year I wore my Datejust I would say for 360 days out of 365 haha These watches are expensive, so I’m trying to fully enjoy it and get my money’s worth. Is it a little scratched up? Yes. But it’s nothing a polish at a regular service couldn’t fix. Plus I like how it looks. I feel like it is aging with me. |

Probably not this one, unless he is interested in the difficulty in obtaining a new Rolex, or how much his Rolex is worth, wether or not a specific activity is safe to do while wearing his watch.

1. My grandfather had one
2. I have tested their durability myself ie. I put one in a freezer & it still worked properly 3. I have a few Rolex watches that are still accurate after 15 years with no servicing 4. The design is iconic enough that there are plenty of copycats |

Congrats! And interesting. My wife has the jubilee hidden clasp 31mm. I have the DJ41 jubilee but only had it for 3 months. Only faint scratches on the clasp. Where are your scratches? Both of ours look brand new and she definitely doesn’t baby hers. She just tosses it around and nothing. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

What makes a rolex so special?
Quote:
I agree. I am OCD with scratches. That’s why I have an eternal fight with myself over the PCLs of the oyster on the DJll that for me fits perfectly or the magic of the DJ41 jubilee which hides everything but wears small on my wrist. Hate to admit that I have owned the DJ41 3 times. (One oyster and 2 jubilees) And the DJll 2 times because of this struggle. Lol. Spent a lot of money buying the same watch over and over. I just decided to wear my DJll this time and don’t care. Only sold my last one because my wife’s diamond ring, cartier bracelet, and DJ31 put 2 big deep scratches/ dents in the case that needed to be laser welded and put 2 chips on my sapphire crystal. Was quoted over 2k to fix everything including service. Sold it for a loss I could live with. Bought the DJ41. Same model with jubilee. Love it but wears too small. Picked up the DJll at a good price and wearing that now as my daily. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

A G-Shock has the durability and dependability, and could be thrown away and replaced every time the battery goes, for many years, for the same price as a single Rolex. Most G-Shocks not only tell the time very acuratelly but do many other things you might want from a watch. To some they have some really stylish designs, but not to others. Same with most watch brands, including Rolex, I personally don't like the smaller mens Rolexes. There are other brands that are less costly than Rolex that I prefer aesthetically, that are probably just as recognisable from a distance, such as Omega Planet Ocean. But, most (if not all) of these are easy to get for less than retail price.
All this said, Rolex have created a desirability that some of us cannot resist. This gets worse when someone says "no you can't get one of those" for whatever reason. Then the fun starts, you have to prove them wrong. You have a few options:1. ignore it all and buy something easier to get, 2. Try to get on an AD waiting list "also a task" if you're young enough to see the end result and 3 pay through the nose to get it quicker. I have a G-Shock, I have an Omega PO (among others) and I have a Rolex, but I see the Rolex as being the marker of achievement, it was harder to get, not just literally but in other peoples minds, whether it be through cost or supply. It has a brand that is instantly recognisable with some affordable prestige attached to it. Not exclusively to me personally but to most that see it and recognise it. I don't particularly care so much what people think but I do care what my family think and what my future ancestors may think. After all "my Grandad left me his Rolex" has a better ring to it than "My Grandad left me his G-Shock" or even "My Grandad left me an Omega" to some extent. In a nutshell I bought a watch for recognition of achievement; actually getting and affording it in the first place is one thing, but then leaving it to someone you love, to remember you by is another thing. I'm sure my grandson would value the G-Shock, but not in the same way. I'm grateful that my AD let me spend my money with them, rather than let the watch go to someone who they liked better or who they think would buy more watches from them. let's hope more Grandsons come along so I can buy more Rolexes. I addition to all this the Rolex sorry and the Wilsdorf foundation is a pretty good one too. |

Ok I'll bite. Did i buy my Rolex for status? Hell no!! I'm low key and hang at drag strips and pool halls.. I always loved the brand even before getting into watches. My first good watch was a Baume Mercier dress watch, 18k on leather as i wore suits for work. After getting married, buying our first house and landing a very good job it was time for my first (Rolex only) after looking at brochures and everything else i could read It was a new TT DJ36 from an AD with 25% off which i wore for years. It's just a rough tough good looking watch with an excellent history. I have a decent collection now with 8 of them and recently added a VC. No one notices and no one cares except for myself and a very few watch buds and us who gather here on the forum. I say buying a watch for investment is ridiculous, at least for me, i make my money other ways. Buying for status, fine, whatever you like, for me i could give a ratzazz. I just love watches period.

I have the hidden clasp DJ36. The polished center links show scratches if you look closely, and so do the case sides Micro scratches but they are there! |
