Although I don't really use them, they're definitely helpful to some people. So, looking at it that way, they serve a purpose.

However.....

The big problem is several are just so patently *stupid* and non-sensical it puts off folks that probably wouldn't care but are 'almost' forced to use them from time to time.

Perhaps to christen a sublime Work of Art 50K white gold Submariner "The Smurf" is to demean it to the point of it being perceived as some childish toy. The Superhero monikers are not flattering or descriptive IMO and, for gosh sakes, having a robust, solid tool watch nicknamed "Batgirl" is preposterous to say the least & somewhat insulting to say the most. The Coke /Pepsi are descriptive and appropriate and I'm sure they're are the least offensive to the nickname haters.

IMO, had some intelligent thought gone into some of the more 'reviled' names, there might be less controversy or heated discussion. But, who really knows right?

Don't like the silly names? Don't use 'em. As I said, I pretty much ignore them but I admit they can be useful and time saving sometimes. YMMV.

For some or most it just adds fun and character I suppose. It than becomes used as an easy quick reference as opposed to the model name or reference no. Its funny how some people get their panties all in a bunch over it when even prominent watch lovers, collectors and ADs all use these names as well.
Whats a thread without a pic

Is there a compilation of the nicknames somewhere on the forum for reference?

You are right, "batgirl" is an extremely sexist and offensive (not to mention non-inclusive and transphobic) nickname likely made up by a chauvinist stuck in 19th century thinking. From now on, I shall call it "gender neutral bat person".

Bat Person on jubilee, and Bat Person on oyster . I thought Batgirl is a superhero like Batman. What’s sexist about giving a nice looking BLNR on jubilee a female superhero name. Even Mondani calls it Batgirl. A lot of famous You tubers too. Now we need a Rolex model to call Robin.

Every time a 6 digit model is mentioned I have to copy and paste the number into Google Images to see what they're talking about.

spouting model numbers can get a little repetitive but glad they're easier than omega reference numbers to remember

Nicknames have been around for a long time i.e. Pepsi, Pan Am, Paul Newman, Root Beer, Tiger Eye. Newer ones like Kermit, Hulk I think are fitting. But too many forced nicknames now bc someone just wants credit for naming a reference imo. Others don't want to take the time to learn reference numbers imo and are more casual collectors in some cases.

Nicknames are an easy shorthand for referring to watches, so I don't mind them. I find it hilarious that anyone would get worked up about people using nicknames instead of the exact reference number. However, I would agree that the batgirl thing is ridiculous. It's just the latest model batman. I feel like the only people who call it batgirl are those who wish to denigrate the latest model on jubilee because in their mind real men have the oyster version or something like that.

I don't use them. Not a fan. Seems like it started with or around the GMT Master BLRO when some doofus said, "Hey, the colors are the same as the Pepsi logo. Yeet!" Then Tosser #2 said, "Well golly, if the BLRO is the Pepsi, we need a name for the Back/Red model. Lets call it Coke. Get it??!" He should have just slapped the first doofus.

I don’t mind the names. what I find more embarrassing each year is, on the release of a new reference, finding a new nick name, and then arguing the case for it to be universally accepted.

One that comes to mind when the blnr came out, someone wanted to call it the ‘bruiser’. It was a painful couple of days reading those threads.

Just think when the new ‘hulk’ comes out and the frenzy for giving it a name. Let me start hulk2, the jolly green giant, the shrek, the leprechaun, green lantern, green arrow, green goblin, robin hood, the mask...

I can understand the coke label as the colours match...

The only nickname worth mentioning is the pussy galore.

These new super hero names just make me cringe. If someone came up to me and said "nice Batman" it would make me want to sell it on the spot.

Why nicknames? Because it makes it easier. Why THOSE nicknames? Because childish people gonna be childish.

People could say new LV, old LV, DayC... but in their minds, marvel occupies a prominent position. Hence full grown men talking about superheroes all day.

Arrogant noobs think that nicknames are new but they've been around for a long time. Look how far back the Day Date has been called a President or Texas Timex for example. lol.

Because I don't want to say "I have the 116500LN White Dial Ceramic Daytona" every time I refer to it. I'd rather say Daytona "Panda". Laziness. It's as simple as that. If you ask me "Which one?"I'll say the latest version. And don't pretend you don't know what I'm referring to just because the nickname Triggers you.

I'm in agreement, simply because it's easier. I agree some of the names are silly, but still easier. Me and all my friends have names and social security numbers, each identify us. Imagine if we referred to each other by our socials because we didn't like someone's name. ....hey, did you see David today --- you mean 345-76-9980?

Imagine if this was the Omega forum, it will be crazy! I just say "Moonwatch, the real one with hesalex" not the IP looking ref # that ends with .005

No, I think to own a Rolex you have to be a serious grownup man, and only use letters and numbers when referring to your respectable Rolex, and I think there will be legislation soon against the inexcusable act of making fun of a Rolex reference by calling it a cartoonish, feminine, or female figure nickname .
