Reasons
He likes the buy classics from each brand. I.e. the omega seamaster and the panarai. He's got 2 classic dive watches in those two. So you could argue that a black dial submariner would fit well.

However, as he has 2 classic divers, it's 50/50 wether adding another to the mix is just going to become crowded. As the submariner is probably the most famous diver, you'd have thought he'd have purchased it by now.

So the black dial submariner is a contender.

I choose the datejust 41mm, blue dial, fluted bezel and oyster bracelet combination, reference: 126334

Because it's classic Rolex
It is not a black dial like his other watches
It can be worn on any occasion, dressed up or dressed down
The oyster bracelet is sporty and classic, not too flashy
The blue dial add's some flare and distinction

You can of course spec other dials on this watch too, mainly grey / white and slate grey with green.

I would say he needs a Rolex for one and I would buy a submariner or a gmt and why not go vintage you’ll be spoilt for choice.

I love the Tudor's on a Bund strap. Would love to see more photos but can't seem to find them anyway. I've been looking at a BB58 (the chrono looks cool too) and think the Bund strap is a perfect combo. Ty for the pic.

Why do a lot of members recommend DavidSW? I always thought C24 was the place to buy used but recently had a bad buying experience and has put me off grey market completely.

Many of the answers you are getting here are guys simply suggesting their personal favorite watches, without giving reason one why your husband would like it as much as they do. Nobody on this planet knows your husband better than you do, so it only makes sense that you be the one to pick out his watch.

The Submariners he looks at seem to be special-edition types, so I'll save those, the Batman, and Daytona for when I'm feeling especially generous

If budget can go up to $9900, then without a doubt fluted and jubilee. That is the datejust look.

I agree! Also, it's often overlooked that almost all of the Subs seen are 5 digit and not the SubC/SubDateC. 5 digit Subs were around ~30 years which is part of the reason you see so many...

First of all, on behalf of all the watch lovers in this forum (and your husband), I want give you props for wanting to treat him with this special gift. Very thoughtful of you!

I think you have narrowed it down to two very good choices. Although the Datejust ("DJ") is a classic design, there is a diversity of opinions here on this forum about the best configuration...(ie. 36 mm vs 41 mm). Rolexes are like Pringles potato chips..."once you pop, you can't stop." I think he will develop strong opinions about what he specifically likes (when there are so many variants on some models), and maybe wise to let him choose the DJ he specifically wants at a later time.

So, with that said, my recommendation is the white dial dial 39 mm Oyster Perpetual ("OP"). I think the consensus in the community is that it is a really striking watch and very versatile...for this reason, it is an in demand watch. Because, relatively speaking, the OP represents the entry-level price point (but not a sacrifice in quality -- it is top notch, like all Rolexes), it is the perfect way to "dip ones toes" into the vast lake that is the Rolex world. Great looking, top-quality, and desired by many in arguably the most "economical" package.

Very nice gesture. I think your husband would really appreciate a sunburst dial given his other watches. In your price range it would imo be impossible to go wrong with a new DateJust41. My preference if I had his collection and within your price range would be:

DateJust 41, smooth bezel, Jubilee bracelet, Blue Sunburst or Rhodium Sunburst dial and luminous stick hour markers.

For a touch above your range, a Milgauss with GV aka Green Sapphire crystal

The fluted bezel option on the DJ I think would move it a good portion above your budget target.

Have to vote for the sub date, from there the Rolex collection will grow. The tough issue is the budget needs to go up a bit, room for negotiating, and will need to consider preowned.

8k limits it pretty significantly for Rolex. Fluted bezel is out for the DJ41. If you want a Sub at 8 will have to wait out the AD. Would go further with other brands. Bump it up to 10k and you have more options that you can actually acquire right now.

I agree he needs a Rolex in the collection, I would go with stainless steel. I neither recommend Precious metals / two-tone watches because they are scratch magnets nor the larger watches, like the Sea-Dweller, Deep sea Yachtmaster II irrespective of your budget (unless he has a large wrist)

The choice also depends on taste. I would recommend the following

1- Submariner or a GMT if you can extend your budget a bit, it's worth it. If not go with the
2- Explorer I or II, both are great.
3- Date just41. It may be a little too old fashioned unless you go with a smooth bezel and an oyster bracelet. The upside is that it has the new 3235 movement.
4-You can't go wrong with an oyster perpetual 39.

Old fashion? Have your seen the blue datejust fluted bezel? Do you think the demand is so high for them because people want to look like grandpa? I agree with much you said, but the datejust fluted is a classic and somethings don’t go out of style. That is why Rolex made the 41.

The fluted bezel with the two-tone jubilee bracelet is definitely the quintessential Date Just. It is undeniably Rolex. But I guess her husband has one of those already. The budget wasn't an issue for me, but I gravitated towards the simple plain looks of the DJ41 with the white dial, a smooth bezel, and the oyster bracelet.
