Downsizing of a collection

I like variety too and tend to float between 15 and 7. I’d like to cap myself at 9 max (one per day and 2x for weekend) but can never truly get there. When I get close, new stuff comes out or I see a new thread on here.....then back to double digits. I think another poster said it prior, guess I’m the addict type.

Okay this is a fun exercise, I decided to take your amazing Rolex collection limit it to 5 pieces and then take that money and add some heavy hitters from other brands.

Keep: 16710, Smurf, SD43, Panda Daytona
Buy: DD40 of whichever gold you like

That's an amazing 5 piece Rolex collection with a 5 digit GMT, 2 PMs, a daily wearer diver and a Daytona.

Okay what else would i add.

Pre moon speedy for vintage.
Lange Datograph 403.035
Patek 5070G or R
AP 15500 Blue

That gets you to 9, which is still a few too many for me, but at least it is under 10.

I get where you're coming from. It's easy to lose your perspective when you get swallowed up by this hobby (addiction? lol).

My advice, the most important thing is figuring out what your core group is. You know, the watches you absolutely can't live without. After that, it's easy. You either sell the rest or consolidate them into the new pieces you're looking at.

But...a word of warning. Make sure of two things: 1) that you don't get rid of any of your core, or (2, those new pieces fall into the core group, or, otherwise, you're just going to end up repeating the cycle. Good luck!

Maybe consolidate slowly. Maybe sell 2-3 pieces and replace with something different like Patek, AP, VC, etc. Then enjoy what you have and do another small consolidation down the road.

I have about a dozen modern timepieces I swap around and wear on a regular basis in my collection. I have often thought it is too much and I should reduce the size down to 4 or 5. I don't need to sell anything because I need the funds (knock on wood). My collection is a bit more varied than yours in other brands (runs the spectrum from PP to Seiko) in conjunction of both dress and sport watches. And frankly at the moment there is nothing I desire in terms of new additions. We all know than can and will likely change. For now, I am going to stay the course with and enjoy what what I have and would suggest you consider the same unless you want to diversify a bit with PM or other brands, than I would let a few go.

Here is where I go off the deep edge and will become evident you may want to take my lead and advice with a grain of salt. I have about 20-30 vintage watches I enjoy and collect that get "some wrist time". These are mostly vintage Hamilton watches (1920s - 1969), with several vintage Omega's and vintage Rolex (not the high priced Sub or Explorers but rather OP's, Datejusts, and Airkings) and a couple of pocket watches. I enjoy learning about the older calibers, case sizes, and history of the manufacturers.

Crazy I know. I just enjoy all things horology and having art you can wear.

My apologies if this is a silly question - but what is the best way to sell a watch? Do you sell on this forum? For people like me, a long time lurker but not big poster, I don't have a reputation.

Reason I ask is that I have a couple I am thinking of selling off.

I've sold off quite a bit of vintage recently that I just wasn't wearing or enjoying.

I turned the funds around and into a few grail pieces that I am enjoying very much including a PF 5711, and Platinum Day Date. More is not always better but collections are always in flux and you need to make changes accordingly.

I've kept the vintage pieces that I can't part with in the collection.

I struggle with downsizing/consolidating too, but to me, it seems like you've got some serious overlap going on. Based on your preferred "wearers", I'd strive to get to something like this:

- Hulk
- YM40 Blue

"Maybe Sell"
- GMT Rootbeer
- SubC Date

And I'd think about adding a DD40, perhaps even in Platinum. Going forward, I'd use these categories and if something drops down a level, just acknowledge it, or sell it without remorse if it no longer sings.

Congrats but I can't go back to one. I started with my 1680 sub that I bough at age 15 and wore it for almost 30 yrs as my one and only until I graduated medical school and my Dad gave me his OQ DD.

Sell it here. I have sold 3-4 watches here. Having great feedback is the key for buying and selling. This is how you will get your true best price. Grays will buy too but at a lower price point. Also make sure your get the verification app so no one gets scammers.

All have tremendous sentimental value for various reasons.

I have so many divers due to being my favorite reference by Rolex.

Love the platinum DD but hate smooth bezels. That is my only gripe about Platinum DD.

GMT coke is for my son. Have all 3 bezels and a brand new jubilee bracelet for him. I may also give him a sub.

Possible departures for me: DJII, EXP II, BLNR and one of the LV's

I love your watches and would cherish a collection like that. I would not care if I wore them regularly. Would you feel better if the money was in a mutual fund? Assuming you have money to eat and pay rent I would keep them all and look to add!

I've sold off a few with careful consideration and no regrets. I'm currently sitting at 6 and I'm pretty happy. If I had to narrow it more, I know in my head where I would start.

i am for downsizing. it helps makes the ones you have more special. how can someone love 6 as much as they do 30 ?

i was up to 25 and definitely didn't wear them all. i could easily pick out 40 if were that easy as well though.

but ultimately i vow to not go over 12 again, and ideally will get down to about 6.

I am not concerned about moving the watch money to mutual funds as I invested heavy in Tesla when the market tanked during the 6 week Quarantine and my returns have been astronomical on top of a very healthy portfolio. I was more considering trading some of my SS to add some precious metal watches to complete my collection.......I know, famous last words.
