It’s an extraordinary piece!!

I, too, am a GMT nut, and it would be the dream of my collection to have something that even resembles the famed albino.

In any case, can’t wait till you take your trip to Geneva, and walk in and plop that down in front of them!!! Can you video their reactions, please!!

Congrats on this. But PLEASE know that some of us have been dying for f/u!!

I am sure when i bring the watch to the Heritage dept in Rolex Geneva, it will be a blast. When i brought the 6542 GMT with red writing to them, they all had that quizzical look on their faces.

I thought these "albino" dials were used in the dial QC process as a way to spot imperfections, with it being easier to see them on a negative. If thats the case I could see HQ saying "its not authentic" (because this configuration was never meant to leave the factory).

On the other hand its equally likely that management approved this configuration as off catalog for a handful of VVIPs. Curious for the F/U.

Very nice!

If you don’t mind, what did the Geiger read directly on that dial?

I am almost certain it is authentic. A very private and wealthy collector friend of mine in Italy, thinks he has seen one in very light silver in the murky past. Hope you dice-roll pays off.

I will throw my hat in the ring and say it is NOT authentic and Rolex Heritage will not confirm it to be real. Cool looking dial, almost certainly radium plots, but a redial from years ago is my opinion.

Looking forward to hearing the final opinion from Rolex and I hope I am wrong :)

I have dealt with the heritage dept before when i brought my 6542 GMT with red writing for a service quote. They told me then that if there is any part that is not original, they will not accept my watch for repair. So if they do accept my silver dialed GMT for repair, it means the dial is original Rolex.

While I do hope the verdict is “authentic”, where do they draw the line semantically with the phrase original? If the dial is original but has been washed, will they accept it? If the dial is original but has been stripped of its lacquer, will they accept it? If the dial is original but has been worked in some way to make it appear silver-ish white, will they accept it?

Good question. I had a watch before that has been redialed and brought it to Rolex to have it changed to a service which they gladly did. I am not sure how they would react if i brought the same watch just for a movement service. Most likely they will convince me to change the dial?

It seems to me that it would be better not to play these guessing games. Trying to read between the lines and infer what Rolex is hinting by accepting your watch for a service will not give you certainty and it clearly will not provide convincing documentation for a future sale. In your place, if I were taking the time and trouble to go to Switzerland, I think I would directly request authentication in writing, even if it involves a fee.

I’d be very careful handing it over for service. I would pay for a consultation. Once they have it in the service department, fine print in contract likely says they cannot let it back to owner with inauthentic parts, so they must replace them, abd who knows how knowledgeable service techs are on certain rare pieces.

Just came from Rolex Geneve and its quite unfortunate that they are closed till Monday. Have no choice but to wait. Went to the Bucherer store pre owned store and the expert was very excited seeing the the watch who also thought it was only a myth. He inspected it very closely and said it is authentic. He alao inquired if i wanted to sell which i politely declined.

Eric, I love that you just flew to Switzerland to confirm a watch’s authenticity, didn’t even bother checking to see if they’d even be open, and upon finding out they weren’t, you just made a what-the-hell long weekend out of it.
And I am not being sarcastic at all! I love that you just went and did this!

With the current lull in the pandemic, its best i travel now considering the chances of a lock down is quite remote at the moment. Its also a a great time to travel to Europe during the spring season. Met with Laurent Ponti and Roy Davidoff today. Both gentlemen have some of the best vintage watches for sale here in Geneva.

Ponti usually has great stuff. Ask for a tour of the private museum when you’re at HQ. They’ve never let me in, but you may have more success with that hen’s tooth on your wrist. Have fun.
