Omega makes too many Speedy re-dos and varieties for me to get excited over the Ed White.

I vote Daytona!

How does the AP size compare to the daytona? I read that it wears about the same size. I was going to one of my grays that have it stock to see it in the metal. AP usually feels larger than what they are and its why I kind of counted out the 41. I prefer 41 or smaller even though I have a 7.5” wrist that can handle it.

AP looks the best but the price is higher also.
AP 26315ST is a bit too small, would be better if you go for 26331ST but the price is a lot higher than Rolex 116500LN.

If based on msrp, I think Rolex is the best for the money.

All of these timepiece are very popular and the price on secondary market is way up high especially for AP blue dial.

I am biased as the Daytona has always been my grail watch. I think the AP is a striking watch and has the cache of being on the next level to Rolex and Omega. My reasoning for not buying an AP is its reputation of being a fragile watch. You can’t expect to wear an AP without being very careful with it. I can tolerate that from a dress watch worn with a tux but not as a daily wear or even out to dinner with friends. No one wants to be worried about breaking their watch. The AP is honestly a more attractive watch than a Daytona but it doesn’t seem worth it. Omegas just aren’t that exciting. They have a cool history but there are lots of things that are historically interesting or important. That doesn’t mean I want or need to have them.

Gotcha.. thank you. I do like that AP reference that you mentioned, but I have too many blue dials in the collection... I was looking for that white/silver dial to change it up. Its why the 26315ST caught my attention. Oh well lol. I will still try it on, I like a 39 explorer on the wrist, so the 26315 might not be too small for me.

I like your thought on this and I have similar thoughts, but the back of the omega is awesome. Its a 4k plus service bill if the AP hit that door knob too hard lol. Im just drawn to that dial. The daytona is a beautiful piece, but the damn secondary market forces one person to look at other watches. I did purchase a paul newman OF, due to the price of the panda. It was a nice watch, but still Im gravitated to the panda. Just have to suck it up and pull the trigger before its 40k lol.

That would be the one giving a panoramic view to a piece of horological history as iconic as it is beautiful (not my pic):

For me it'd be AP first, Omega second, Rolex third.

I think the AP looks the best -- that classic bracelet is really nice -- and I like having a date complication, which the Omega and Rolex lack.

The only thing that'd give me pause about the Ed White is the bracelet. It looks unattractive in the pics compared to other Speedy bracelets, but I'd need to see it in person. I got the enamel dial Speedy several years ago from a friend (the one with the F. Piguet movement) and really like it - pics attached - though I know many of the Omega purists hate that model :)

Daytonas never did much for me, especially with the ceramic bezels. Never found them attractive/inspiring.

Since you asked about other chronos, I was going to mention a (preowned) Lange 1815 Chrono, but it's not a bracelet watch.

This is a great question/thread. Would’ve been better had there been a poll.

Nevertheless, I will give the political answer and say that all three are special in their own right. Respect them all.

Having had a 116500 and a speedmaster 1861 (never had an AP so can't comment), I would go with a 321 without hesitation. The Daytona is a great watch and great to wear but the legibility and look (only my opinion) of the 321 is a clear winner for me.

Daytona. I’m fine with the 1861 Speedy Pro and don’t see the value of paying the huge premium for the Ed White. They look almost identical asides from some historical design cues like the dot over 90 and applied logo at 12, many of which are now incorporated into the new sapphire sandwich Speedy. The APRO is a step up from the Daytona, but I’d go with the three hander.

AP is a piece of jewelry that’s very delicate yet has the best craftsmanship of the three
Speedmaster got the history, and an iconic chronograph
Daytona is a gorgeous watch but waaaaaaaaay over hyped and hard to get at MSRP

Between the three I personally would pick the Daytona but you can’t go wrong with any!

At that price point, AP - no question.

After that, I guess the Omega, but I don’t like that it has a ceramic bezel and I prefer speedmasters with twisted lugs/crown guards, so tbh I find this 321 speedmaster to be imperfect. I’d be more inclined to buy a vintage 321, or hopefully Omega makes a real 321 moonwatch with twisted lugs one day.

The Daytona is a Daytona.

This is very subjective. Put a picture of 3 beautiful supermodels/actresses and ask to rank them, the answers are subjective. It’s because no real ranking can be made.

My preference amongst these three: Daytona then ROC then Speedmaster. However it’s solely my preference and I like like all three. I would not hesitate to say these three can be a complete collection. You can’t go wrong with any of the above.

Which Chrono would you choose

I went down this chronograph rabbit hole and came out with a Zenith EP 1969 original. I considered all the watches mentioned. IMO the EP is the best value chronograph considering secondary prices.

Having said that, if money isn’t an issue I would go with the RO chrono.

26331 would be much better than 26315 for that wrist size, IMO.

AP. If your wallet can take the hit.

I say this as an owner of Daytona C. AP ROC is a stunner. But then again, this is very subjective and based on your taste.

I really appreciate the history, movement, and heritage of AP RO. Also, it is a gorgeous time piece.

btw, how much is the AP ROC from grey nowadays? $30-40k?

and, not sure if Omega should be in the mix. It is literally 1/10th the price of AP.

not a fair comp, given the delta in pricing

At the this moment 36.5-40k... who knows next week
the 41 (especially the blue dial) 45-46k

that's quite the steep price to pay for a steel watch. I'd love to get an AP RO someday, but not sure if I can ever justify this crazy price.

If I am in the hunt for a steel chrono today, maybe I'd just settle for Zenith chronomaster sport and call it day. almost identical looks / movement compared to Daytona, just without the Rolex logo on the dial.

If I want something fancier, maybe a white gold Daytona for $30-35k.

I wouldn't drop $40-45k on a steel watch. but that's just me.

Might be worthwhile to read about how the "Ed White" Caliber 321 Omega is made. Comparing the modern reissue to just about anything Omega's made in the past 30-40 years is a downright shame.

In roughly this price range I would probably lean towards a Vacheron Overseas chrono.

Down market on the sporty side I like the El Primero (including a couple great looking Revivals). Also JLC Master Control (even Polaris if you like Speedmaster but would recommend seeing in person). Lots of bang for your buck in that brand.

Up market the Lange 1815 chrono and PP 5170. I know, how original.

None of this is a knock on OPs 3 watches. Just to me, Speedies and Daytonas never jumped out to me like I thought they would (and though Ed White is magnificent, I wouldn't be enthused enough to buy it). AP makes a beautiful, bold watch. Not getting my money at current pricing (I was in maybe... 6 years ago?) but it's a piece that scratches the itch.
