Does anybody else hate it

I’m not a huge fan too, especially when people use reference numbers for much older watches (1008, anyone?) or when people say “incoming” and then give only the serial # instead of the name of the watch (e.g. Sub), but for purposes of this forum and for being technically accurate the serial numbers are relevant. My husband went out of his way to get a 16710, not just any pre-ceramic bezel GMT. I also know that a 1675 is way out of our price range! The serial number also helps with dating and valuing the watch.

That being said, I have no idea what the serial number is of my mother in law’s ladies’ President. It is the classic yellow gold/fluted bezel, with a champagne dial, and given as a gift by my father in law in 1979. She didn’t save the box and papers, and I’m not about to take off the bracelet to find out the serial number. So, I have no serial # for reference. I also refer to all of our watches by their model names, not serial numbers, in daily conversation.

I hate that Rolex doesn’t differentiate dial colors in their reference numbers... if someone writes 216750 or 116500 they have to write the white or black dial! Come on, Rolex, adjust a digit for dial color!

It’s like speaking a language. References like acronyms are efficient, but are not inclusive for the less familiar. I am still very much learning the language... it’s overwhelming but fun IMHO.

If you are buying it's easier to search using reference numbers than by long drawn out names. Generally speaking I know the reference numbers for all the Rolex I've owned and am interested in (because I've researched them). There's one I could never quite remember and that was the Sky Dweller. I'm not an overly experienced WIS but still fell relatively new to the whole business in comparison to many on this forum. I do like expediency and learning the numbers through familiarity helps with that. I certainly haven't tried to memorize them. On the other hand in a pinch I'll look up newer models on the Rolex web site.

you can use both types of reference name nickname or reference code

I have never liked it, and thought it a bit obnoxious when I first came on the forum, as the Rolex forum seems to be the only one that does it.

I now try to use a description and a ref number when on this forum to fit in.

I am a lucky fellow. I’m only into vintage, and so will never have to remember more than five digits, except for 168000.

It used to bother me, and I think I even posted about it. Someone said “stick around for a while”, and that was good advice.

Modern Omega reference numbers are useless as shorthand. Too bad.

Yeah. Unpopular opinion but it annoys me when i’m unfamiliar with the ref number and i have to look it up. Waste of my time. I prefer nicknames or model + color/metal bc I know exactly what it is.

I actually prefer reference numbers, unless it’s a very obscure model.

I actually get more annoyed when people use the year as if it’s a car model.

Reference numbers are precise, especially if you add other parts, like m116518ln-0047 is a last gen oyster flex YG Daytona with Paul Newman dial.

Its what your used to. I learned a lot of the Patek numbers quickly but they are just four numbers.

I don't stress myself in remembering reference numbers, most times I just call them their cartoon names which I think is easier to remember.
