Eh? It's not been a 3rd party movement since 2000.

(And as others have noted, the OP is talking about dive watches anyway)

Thank you !!!
A provocative and subjective question! Without operationally defining “king of the jungle,” then the answer is - in my opinion - yes. I’m guessing that the Sub is the most influential watch in the history of wristwatches.

The SS Sub is a very masculine looking watch, in a way that others in the Rolex lineup are not, at least not to my eye. No nonsense and without a lot of fanfare. Similar to myself ha ha !

It is, and love it, however the Tudor Pelagos IMO is beating it several aspects... mainly that of being true tool like older Subs/SDs used to be before they started getting a bit blingy.

Not just the king of the dive watches, king of all watches. It is what started the real hype in luxury watches and none more copied. Nothing is close. I have had more expensive watches, but none as iconic, durable, no-nonsense, and good looking. I can wear it with anything in every situation. We all have heard that you can wear it from the beach to the boardroom. So very true and can’t think of another one that this applies to as well as the submariner. It is understated, but those who know watches appreciate its hommage to the original. Really the only watch I need.

Certainly the SS Sub is one of those watches everyone just getting into ROLEX wants to buy. It’s entry level in the fact that most every entry level buyers buys it or a DJ as their first Rolex. The SS Sub is literally everywhere and being so common has more advanced buyers looking for more unique options and there are a lot of them. Because it is so copied also makes the general “black bezel dive watch” even more pedestrian. This is why many of us were drawn to the LVC way before it was popular as it was viewed as just a odd green Submariner. If Rolex came out with a blue SS Sub most would loose their mind to get one.
More advanced buyers. Right. It probably means people who buy TT serti Submariners, that one with diamonds on the dial, then a 'bluesy', then maybe buy a "'Hulk" or "batman" or even a "batgirl", watches that everyone here seems to own. I get it.

I agree that in the dive work the Rolex Sub line would be the "King" but in the overall Rolex line without a doubt the Dayton is the "King". And a very elusive and expensive "King" (LoL).

This is probably the closest I come to diving, but yeah... Needed an excuse to post another pic of my Sub, thanks OP. The King, indeed.

Exactly. “More advance buyers.” LOL!

To me, that means the watch snobs on YouTube that try to convince me that a Glashutte SeaQ is a better diver than a Submariner. They’re nice, but no thanks. I’ll take my Submariner all day, any day.

Some people accumulate so much knowledge about watches, that they ultimately can’t see the forest through the trees.

Depends on your definition of "king". Frankly I think it's the coolest watch ever made and I am still shocked to be wearing this extremely precise mechanical instrument on my wrist.

It is arguably the most influential watch in modern time. Further, it is a simple, easy-to-read watch, and it does exactly what it is designed to do very well...and I imagine not very many of them see saltwater use. All said, I consider it the perfect watch for every occasion, and I like how it's not insanely large and not an excessively high-profile watch, even though it is a Rolex with a ceramic bezel.

That said, there are a lot of really nice watches out there. Hell, in a way, I think we could also argue that some of the dive watches made by Seiko are "king" in their own respect.

Well if you ever dive in the Red Sea there is a SD belonging to me somewhere in the blue just of the north pinnacle of the Elphinstone reef. It was lost around 22 years ago but depths off the reef go down to over 1000m.I was trying to get back into the pick up boat after a dive in the Red Sea and when we surfaced the sea was quite rough with heavy swell. I started to take my BC off when the Egyptian deck hand just pulled up my BC and left me suspended by my SD bracelet. It was good job the spring-bar failed, as they are not designed to have almost 15 stone dangling from them, one SD lost to the abyss but I still have my wrist.

Every Rolex collection should begin with a Submariner and go from there.

Man oh man; let's have a thread based on a contrived premise for ultimacy and crown a watch that is way overly popular due to mythical ownership by imaginary secret agents as the top watch of all times and for what reason, hype alone. Also then lets go further and say that collections aren't complete without one. Sorry I don't buy it and precisely because of the premises that it's based on. At one point perhaps 30 or 40 years ago I could have agreed but today the Sub is pretty much without purpose as other than a popular pricy fashion trinket. It's bright and shiny and well made but that doesn't make it either the ultimate or an absolute must. I find it oversized, over priced, over sought after, overly common, and over the top. It's a fine watch and should be owned if one wants one. For me I like the feel of the Yacht Master more on my wrist. I also like its looks better. Not to mention it's not owned by every watch collector without imagination who just must follow the herd. Regardless I'm signed up to buy a sub if one appears; a bluesy, fwiw.

I live in the middle of London and have literally seen around 5-6 in my life on peoples wrists.

Online a lot more (obviously) so despite its popularity it’s not as common as you’d like to make out.

I’m in central London again today and as an avid ‘looker’ at wrists I’ll pretty much guarantee you I won’t see one today.

As for your commoners comment. If a commoner can afford to wear a piece of jewellery more expensive than some people’s cars then I’m happily a commoner

There is no doubt the Sub is the most recognizable and iconic Rolex model. Everyone knows what it is.

The 6 digit models are much more flashy then the older 5 series. The ceramic bezel throws off a lot of light! I love mine and it’s a must have for anyone most people who collect Rolex.

The biggest seller and the most recognised Rolex watch worldwide is the DJ range, and yes in the sports Rolex range then its the subs.

The Pelagos beats the Submariner hands down in every way (except being shiny and saying Rolex). I had both at the same time, barely wore the Submariner.

Pelagos punches in the Sea Dweller weight class IMO.

Daytona is not king. Unlike the Daytona, the sub (pretty much simultaneously with BP) broke new ground with their dive watch and indeed it was used heavily in the dive industry and even military. The Daytona has no such legacy. It used an outsourced movement (nothing wrong with that per se) and was just another chrono. It was not the chronomat, navitimer, el primero, heuer, or seiko chronos that actually either did stuff or were the first at something. Daytona has been on the wrists of those watching the people wearing the subs actually do important things.
