I started with a TT because that’s what I wanted. But that was awhile ago. If I were to start again today, I probably would start with something else. My TT DJ still is timeless and I still wear it today.

90% of modern TT buyers did so because that was all that was available

TT was my first choice on my first Rolex 30 yrs ago, a DJ. I've owned nothing but SS since.

I know right. I am also not young, had both SS and TT. Just like SS better.

My first Rolex was a TT datejust because that is what I wanted.

The steel Rolex craze is pretty new. They were case dwellers not all that long ago (sans Daytona).

My grey dealer had just about any watch I could want. I wanted a 16613lb for 24 yrs. I picked 3 different watches and asked my old lady which she preferred. A 16610, the 16613lb I own and a JCDS. She chose the one I wanted most out of the bunch and that solidified my purchase.

83% of statistics are made up on the spot.

Truly, line this is objectively false. Until a few years ago, it was easy to buy almost any Rolex at a discount in plenty of places. Frankly, Rolex makes some gorgeous TT watches. The TT datejusts are stunners. The TT bluesy and root beer are two of the most beautiful watches made by Rolex. The bluesy is a watch I’ve loved since being a kid and is literally the watch I grew up loving. I turned down a bluesy and a root beer before buying my stainless watch. I’m not sure that I made the right call.

I say all this as the owner of one watch: a steel sports model with a waiting list.

I went into the AD looking specifically for a TT DJ in champagne or white dial. Ended up with the champagne dial. Will be my main watch for the next 30-40 years.

TT watches simply look more impressive than SS in the most comparable variants. I haven’t even seen people in this forum argue differently

Until recently, you could always get a SS Daytona, they were just marked up 30-40% over MSRP. Not hard to find, though. Then the thought process for some would likely be:

"Well, if I'm about to drop $15,000 on a watch, at that point might as well get the one that's half gold; it's stupid to pay the same for all-steel."

In other words, it was a value assessment, and while one would have preferred the stainless at MSRP, if they were paying TT prices, they were getting a TT watch.
A good observation. Likely many became TT owners because they saw a relative value there when there was some equilibrium. These days it is simply availability.

It is also interesting to consider whether the gold component in the TT watch is always a plus apart from investment and visual appeal. As much I have enjoyed owning a TT watch, gold just does not perform like steel. 2 months in and the steel on my daytona looks great... the gold not so much! I guess it still leads to the question of what the TT watch is fundamentally. Is it a dressed up SS watch or a more casual PM? How ought one use and treat it? (Obviously on TRF the answer is always: whatever way buyer sees fit!) I use mine like a beater. While I love how it looks, in the long run, steel would have been better suited to my purpose.

Bought a TT omega seamaster and a year after I sold it.

Won’t prob buy a TT Rolex or any other brand in TT either. Find it difficult to like the two colours together.

Not sure I’d want TT as my only watch, but I like having a few of them for the times you want some pop.

Hard to beat a bluesy for summer dress.

Two tone your first choice? Be honest.

The ones have owned have all been bought used and have been older models, none of them because wanted its ss model and could not get it. None of them had stay for long, except this one which has a little RG:

My TT Sub Bluesy was my first sports model watch. Back when u still can get hulk / batman on display. I have to admit, other than Bluesy i wouldn't choose the other TT models.
Maybe DJ41, but not the rest.

TT Blue Submariner was my first nice watch, loved it for the blue dial.

I no longer have it though as I upgrade to a full YG

it’s nobody's first choice let’s be honest however the price of PM models has soared. Looking to settle on a TT DJ41 instead of a RG DD40.

LOL

You know what at least some guys are speaking the truth. I bought my first 116613LB because I could not afford the full gold Bluesy.

fast forward 5 years I flipped the TT for the full gold.

Always good to be honest with oneself.

I got a 126613LB as my first Rolex from an AD. It was a watch I had really wanted while growing up and had envisioned owning one day. Prior I had some datejusts from the gray market. Currently, I have the Bluesy and a Pepsi and I find myself reaching for the Bluesy on days when I'm not at work since it's not as loud.

TT models I like and seriously considering currently are the bluesy and the DJ Wimbledon.
Like others I worry they may be too loud on the wrist but meh who notices anyway right?

For me the only TT I liked and did own was the bluesy and root beer. For me the problem was not the TT. The bluesy’s dial for me was not dark blue enough. Other than that is was the perfect watch for me, but didn’t like how dial looked in the sun and different angles. The root beer at times to my eyes was beautiful. That was when the brown looked more burgundy than brown. But 90% of the time the bezel was what it was, brown and even light milky brown at times. If they did this watch again with a warm burgundy, more red tone, might buy it again. I wish the bluesy had the same dial as the datejust. So for me it had nothing to do with the TT, just very picky with watches.

All of these, root beer has been slept on by a lot of folks who set out to only look for BLRO and BLNR. But it’s miles better than both in real life. After owning the BLRO for more than two years, I would absolutely take the CHNR as a first choice.

Man I have to disagree. In photos the root beer looked so much better. After owning in real life I could not unsee the brown. Needs a jubilee as well. Burgundy and jubilee I might be back in. For me black and blue look better together.

Is the gold seriously dented and dinged, or just scratched? While steel is harder, I wonder if it has just as much to do with the fact that the gold components are high-polished on all TT pieces?

Personally, I see them more as dressed up steel for two reasons: There's the obvious (price) and then the fact that the protective parts of the watch, case and case back, are still steel and make for a more durable housing. Other structural and high-use parts, like the screws and major clasp components, are also steel instead of PM.

In other words, bracelets and bezels are more subject to damage (mostly cosmetic) but the inner workings have every big of protection as their all-stainless counterparts.

Two tone your first choice? Be honest.

I started collecting when I turned 64 and as such I didn’t have any preconceived viewpoint on TT’s one way or the other. To me I just wanted a nice watch after seeing my sons Explorer to celebrate how I managed to get that old.

Anyway after getting a Milgauss Me & my son stopped in just to BS with my AD a year later. I asked if he had a Sky Dweller, since I wanted to see what it looked like on my wrist. The AD brought out a Rose Gold PM he had in the back for another customer. It was huge on my wrist and I immediately realized it was not for me. But the color I feel in love with.

My son - said did you ever see the TT CHNR and the AD said I have one of those also. He brought it out and it floored me with the color contrasts and is now on my wrist.

My choice was more of an impulse buy after seeing the watch. Would I buy/desire a full PM CHNR, I doubt it. I like the contrast of the TT.

The CHNR has rarely left my wrist since last July when I bought it. The Milgauss is not happy - though it does get some time.

Steve

My first love was in Tenerife, in the window was the TT 116613LN around 30 years ago, since then always wanted a Sub, tried for an SS over the last 4 years mainly due to price but would have taken any Sub on offer, first chance to acquire one was the 116613LB bluesy so jumped at it and love it but still want an SS for more daily wear as the TT (for me) gets scratched to easily.
