Persistent disinterest in other "grail" brands.

Problem with the other brands is that they offer inferior bracelet/clasps (e.g. Omega, Grand Seiko, Tudor, Zenith are all guilty). Meanwhile the haute horology brands have more fragile movements that you'd worry about damaging from every day use.

Rolex has the best combination of robust reliable movement, water-proofness of the case, comfortable elegant case design offering class and sophistication in the design language, and superior bracelet/clasp engineering for a highly comfortable wear. This is the result of actual research, design, and engineering efforts that are directed towards the overall wearing experience (inclusive of the bracelet, GASP!), with gradual evolution of consistent product lines towards nearing perfection in their respective categories.

Hard to beat that.

We’re on the same page Nikko. Sub is a great watch. I own one. That said the GO is on another level. Enjoy your watch, IMO it’s the superior one on many aspects but this will never be the venue for that debate.

The only new additions over the past 10 yeasr have been my Pano Seaq Glashutte bicolour Rose gold, which I just fell in love with and a vintage Heuer Montreal.

When you wear a Rolex it feels special. Like you made it. It’s a special club. Maybe not as exclusive as some other brands but nothing gives you the feeling of putting on a Rolex.

I have a few other brands. They just don’t give me that magic feeling of a Rolex even if they are considered more exclusive.

Rolex is my favorite brand, but Omega makes some great “must have” watches too.

I can do without watches from brands like JLC, IWC, Zenith, Glashutte, Blancpain, Grand Seiko, Cartier, etc. All make great watches, no doubt, but I’m just not in love with them.

I do like the Tudor BB58 blue and the Breitling Navitimer B01 43mm. Those are 2 watches I could buy in the future.

So even though Rolex is my favorite brand, I’d like to have some Omega, Tudor, Breitling watches sprinkled in there as well.

Sub Date - well done! You started out right.

I really like JLC, AP, and IWC, but Rolex is magical. Rolexes are extremely accurate, durable, historic/iconic, and what bumps it up to wonder level is the fact that it’s a charity of sorts. Rolex doesn’t chase profits how “luxury holding groups” do.

This is very close to my personal taste. I love Omega & Tudor. The latest-gen Seamaster is just spectacular. The BB58 blue is a home run.

Rolex marketing is and has been brilliant.
You don't just buy a watch, you buy a ticket to a special club.

I totally disagree with this....but thats what opinions are for.
You should wear a watch that impresses you and not care about anyone else.
When Im at home alone with my wife and we have a nice bottle of wine for dinner on a weekend...I throw on a nice shirt and put on my A.Lange & Sohne because I am so impressed with the workmanship and movement. Rolex is a great brand and a pretty good watch.

There’s always one watch that will first draw you to watches. Yours happens to be Rolex. Mine was (gulp) Bell & Ross back in the day. Your tastes will then expand to appreciate other watchmakers. You’ll see.

I am in the same boat. I keep trying to get myself interested in other brands. I've got a Speedy, Seamaster, and BB58. But I keep mostly focusing on Rolex because of their quality, accuracy, and durability. I have a 1016 Explorer that has been in the family for 49 years now and runs at +3 sec/day. I have a 16710 GMT from 2001 that I don't believe has been serviced and still runs within +2 sec/day. It's experiences like this that endear me to the brand for making the best sports watches.

Now, if I ever found the need for a dress watch it would be Cartier all the way!

Everyone has their own motivation for collecting and the way we see appeal in certain things is very individual.

Rolex makes a great watch for what’s available on that level of quality. They have strong identities, a strong position in the market, good underlying engineering…

There are lots of reasons to collect Rolex. Most of them are pretty easily „accessible“ in that everyone can understand them. That’s why there is huge demand, because one really doesn’t have to be particularly sophisticated to „get it“ with Rolex.

To me, that is the reason I do not collect modern Rolexes (albeit having a few I enjoy very much). They are financially exclusive, as is every luxury good which is hard to come by. But they are, for the most part, not intellectually exclusive. Beyond a few nicknames and basic specs, there’s not much one would need to know to appreciate them. The only thing one can really aspire to is assembling various soda variations, superheroes and the odd Daytona to brag about one’s AD relationship and the underlying spending power, all of which is entirely irrelevant outside of one’s Instagram following. To me, that’s all pretty blunt and boring.

In that regard, areas like vintage Rolex or proper high watchmaking, where one actually has to know their stuff, are much more challenging and interesting. That’s why folks eventually grow up into liking more sophisticated brands like Journe or Lange as they become more educated.

Why would a nasty wine or an ugly shirt be antithetical to doing something for one’s own enjoyment rather than to be seen by others? Wine is not good because of its popularity, but because of how it tastes to the person drinking it. Makes no sense

I don't think you are uninterested in other brands, and you are certainly not disinterested, but not enough to pull the trigger, and that is fair enough, if you like traditional round sports watches with a strong and identifiable aesthetic then you can't go wrong with a Rolex, most people joined this forum because they like them.
