As a chemist, I thought I might chip in here. As I remember, Humphry Davy named it aluminum in the 1800’s, from the Latin “alumen”. It was later adjusted to aluminium to fit in with the naming of many other metals (eg sodIUM). Canada and America retained the original naming, the rest of the world used the new. Both are acceptable to RSC, though I believe IUPAC uses aluminium.

He actually first referred to it as "Alumium" then "Alumine".
Though I grant you he dabbled with "Aluminum".

Still, he was only a chemist......
