I bought my WG DD40 Olive dial so i would have the weight of gold when wanting to wear a silver tone metal, but I bought olive dial so it wouldn’t look like my DJ.
Now those who
know it’s wg because of the dial olive color and DD’s only come in PM.
I think one WG Rolex watch is all one needs in a collection.

I’ve commented on TRF before that I like YG and RG on other’s wrists but when I look at one on my own wrist, they just don’t click.
I love my WG Submariner because of the way it looks and feels on my wrist. Yeah, it looks like an SS Sub with a blue bezel. However, “I” know how special it is but only another WIS or thief will know what it is 🤣. The Smurf was too blue for me. When the new one came out I was sold. If I ever consolidated my collection, I would keep my WG Sub and kiss my SS pieces goodbye.

lol wut???

WG has a sheen and luster that are clearly different from SS.

i thought most adult men should know this already, as they must own some WG jewelry, including wedding bands.

not to mention, WG rolex feels different on wrist compared to SS. more heft.

one clear downside to WG is it scratches more easily as it is softer metal. scuffs much more easily too.

I envy some of you guys for being able to stay fixated on a specific grail watch. My grail changes monthly. I hoped I would settle some day but it’s not happening

Interesting conversation about white gold Rolex.

Not a great photo, but illustrates the differences nicely. The platinum is very bright, the white gold has a nice warm hue, and the stainless is very flat and uniform.

I was curious over WG for years but never totally sure - probably for the reasons given in the OP’s post. Once I committed that disappeared - if you know, you know

I've been through several desirable SS pieces over the last 15yrs or so - back when things were slightly less 'mainstream' I found wearing any or all of them quite the event. Few people might notice them or even have one themselves.

Fast-forward to the last couple of years and Rolex has erupted over social media and all those pre-loved pieces that sat in display cases are now adorning many a wrist all over the globe.

Yes, wearing the 'latest and greatest' SS has a certain feeling of being different or somehow 'special'. But in quite quick succession this soon becomes the new norm.

YG or RG I don't object to. For me, it's purely the safety aspect of being able to wear the watch whenever and whereever I want with less concern for anyone's eye being caught by the obvious value it displays. It's not a risk I can either afford to take in losing it, nor wish to constantly feel when I'm wearing it.

For me and my collection now, the WG pieces I've recently traded out of SS into WG for are the:
WG GMT Pepsi Meteorite
WG Daytona Oysterflex with Steel Dial

Both of which have quite unique dials and are specific only to PM. With this comes a certain element of being less 'commonplace' given their pricing and lower production... and that in itself gives me the sense of having something a little more 'special'.

For me, I love the brand and what it represents to me. Each piece I've purchased has been at various stages and holds many memories - either as significant milestones, achievements or just being able to have some fun riding the wave of popularity and value appreciation and being able the 'trade-up'

Actually wearing the pieces are where any PM piece comes into play for the owner... you cannot replicate that sense of heft and substance, which acts as a constant assuring reminder to me of the above points and small sense of achievements of 'trading-up' and ensuring those milestones remain special by attributing them an appropriate special token that the SS models don't give for me.

For me, the watch does need to be different in aesthetics from it's SS model. I'd have been quite annoyed if I were a WG Pepsi Black Dial on Oyster owner when the new SS piece was released. Bad form Rolex.

Ultimately, regardless of metal, SS or PM - the watch has to look bad ass!!

I do still have a Steel 116520 White which I like on my partner (and she loves it) - but I'm considering selling as it as it has no heft and generally feels quite small. I will say, that the OysterFlex does seem to wear a little bigger on wrist - I think because of the thickness of the rubber bracelet and the fact the bellows hold the strap a little prouder of the wrist. The Steel tends to be a little less... impressionable.

The TT 16613 Bluesy my first Rolex back in 2005 is a keeper as it's still an Iconic piece for me. Sure it catches attention, I'd hate to lose it or have it taken... for many the 'cheaper' pieces are covered on insurance. But I know for many that the cost of insuring their beloved piece is an afterthought at the point of making a claim... or they looked into it and it was not deemed necessary - a very sad loss indeed should the worst materialise.

I'm firmly in the boat of not understanding why one would take a coloured metal and make it look like SS. If I wanted stealth wealth I go platinum.

Why does platinum qualify for stealth wealth but white gold doesn’t for you? Platinum, steel and white gold all look similar

My husband has a WG Sub and of course it looks nothing like the steel version. I have a WG GS snowflake that is very under the radar and a WG Breguet fly back. I did recently have someone notice it and was surprised by that. WG DD is a stunning watch. Maybe someday.

I just don't understand why you'd like a yellow metal and change it to white.

He brought up his grail, the actual item that he hopes to have one day. He asked about mine, and I explained it was a gold version of the sub I currently own. He shook his head yes and said how nice a solid gold watch is. Then I explained it was actually white gold. He asked: “So it will look almost exactly like the one you have now?” I answered yes, (except for the blue bezel) it looked the same, it would just be gold. He got a puzzled look on his face. He was not condescending at all, but he just didn’t understand. If you want an all-gold watch, then why would you get one that looked (almost) exactly like the (steel) one you have now? I tried to explain that it was really more of a private acknowledgement thing, ME knowing that it was all gold and I had reached my grail piece, (besides the feeling of the extra weight), but I have to admit he had an interesting point.

My grail is the 126619, and I will get it… someday. I know I am going to smile every time I look at it, that is enough reason for me, but the way he put it kind of made sense too, i.e If it looks (almost) the same, why spend the xtra money for a WHITE gold watch?

What do you guys think, especially you WG owners.
Well, if you follow that same logic, why would you spend 10k for a watch that does nothing more than a $200 (or even less) watch?

You said it yourself. Passion. This is a hobby that is not defined by logic, but rather, the watches that ignite not only our passion, but, again as you described, put a smile on our face.

Some here, like your friend, don't get that concept and are constantly quibbling about it, just can't "get why anybody would spend the extra money for something that looks like steel." In other words, they've drawn an arbitrary line in the sand that says it's okay to spend this much, but not okay to spend this much, and especially not so if it looks like steel. Gasp...the horror.

So...I can't think of a better way to screw up your enjoyment of this hobby, or let's just call it what it is, passion, then listening to that sort of thing. Just my two cents, of course.

White gold makes no sense.

A Chronograph that has dials so small you can't see them makes no sense.

A tachymeter makes no sense....who has ever used one?

A watch with a silver face and silver hands that is very difficult to see the time on unless you do a double take at an angle to the light makes no sense.

So then...why do I like this watch so much?

Look at it...put it on and it makes total sense.

White Gold or PT is more discreet and less ostentatious than yellow or rose gold. That would be my preference. I’d love a WG Sub, although any type of Sub seems a long way away just now….

Some might say ANY gold, is an unnecessary component, as it changes a tool watch into jewelry….

Well, the display port bag I opened today described the monitor connects as gold tipped for better quality equipment, and therefore by a huge jump of logic, adding a gold to a professional rolex must also make it a better tool!

In a watch gold doesn't work well for me as its so soft but that said WG has a very special softness and subtlety to it you have to see to appreciate. Its like a secret only you know...like your wife wearing sexy underwear under an evening gown.

I'd go even further. The blue bezel only on the current WG sub is step in the right direction (compared to the smurf.) I'd love a WG sub that looks just like the SS. Single or double red would be great, though.

On the list/hoping to add the WG meteorite daytona and GMT to my WG DD40.

I don't like other people paying attention to my watch unless they are a watch person themself, or at least genuinely curious or interested. WG ticks those boxes for the most part.
