What about your collection proves you are anti-hype?

IWC big pilot (x2) with eight strap options in addition to my Rolex collection.

VC 5500 reverse panda is my next target.

My first wristwatch at 5 or 6 years old was a diver inspired Timex. It was on a rubber strap and water resistant to like 3 ATM I thought it was the coolest thing in the world that it could play in the mud with me and then go in the shower. This one rotates regularly along with my Rolex and Brietling.

I prefer my Speedmaster Racing 40mm reverse panda over a Daytona. I like the Daytona fine but between the 2 I like my Omega’s classic vibe. I own a Squale GMT and appreciate their history in the industry. It is not a Coke, LN, or Pepsi homage, it’s black with like a yellowed tropic style lume and 24hr markers. I liked that better than the Rolex options. These exist and rotate alongside of my 2019 SubC Date.

I also have a Hamilton Khaki. I just get what I like! I’m eyeing an OP34 in the future either new or vintage… haven’t decided, but definitely NOT a bright colored dial.

I like many Rolex designs and plenty of them are “hyped” but I’d never wear them because I can appreciate things that are not my taste. I won’t buy a Pepsi or Hulk just to “flex” but I see what others like in them. They are just not my style.

Interesting question,

I bought my first Rolex in 1984, purloined and replaced with a TT 36mm Rolex Datejust in 1986. Back then Rolex was affectionally known as the Texas Timex. I buy watches because I like them, I don't sell them or trade them. But that said I have passed on an Air King to my son and to my SIL, an Omega Seamaster.

My current inventory includes:

Rolex TT Datejust
Rolex 16570 Polar 3186
Rolex Date Sub 126610LN
Rolex Cellini
Omega Moonwatch
Omega X33 Skywalker
Nomos Ahoi no date
Tudor Ranger
Breitling 42mm Superocean Heritage II
Tag Carrera Cal 5
Tag Formula 1 Chrono CAU1117
Tissot T Touch Solar

And my wife and daughter have their Rolex and other day watches as well

So, hype? No. I like watches and I like variety, but I'm a strong Rolex fan.

Me too, I enjoy getting the latest Casio GShock/Pathfinder/Protrek as much as getting the call from the AD. Getting a Rolex is now pretty rare for me as I don't play AD games. But back in the day, I could walk in and get a model I wanted for a discount. Now I'm content to be called and pay list. Crazy.

Interesting question and answers. I guess a lot of my collection qualifies as hype models. But I buy 'em only at AD msrp and I buy only what I like. I don't think about what others may think about them. I wear them because they look great and I feel good when i wear them.

This. Does not hold value, overshadowed by Rolex sports models. It also happens to be my favorite watch at the moment

Only hyped model GS makes lol!

Jokes aside, it is one of the few worth every ounce of hype!

I measure hype based on the grey market prices. Last time I checked, even though GS makes 35k watches per year compared to 800k made by Rolex, the Snowflake is available in abundance at a deep discount. This is the best indication that the hype is nowhere close to any Rolex model (except perhaps Cellini)

I've always preferred alternatives to the standard black Submariner, which I personally find à little bit boring. I would still wear one, but having the choice here are the anti-hype models I went for.

The YM40 platinum dial 116622, understated most of the time but with a trick up its sleeve. When the sun comes out, the dial gently shimmers. Not an eye scorching sunburst reflection, but a more subtle and civilised sparkle. The classy Sub.

I'm a big fan of the SD43. It offers substantially more wrist presence and feels more satisfying on my wrist. When released in 2017, its beautifully proportioned lugs almost flush with the larger bracelet offered an appealing alternative to the fat Sub 116610. With the arrival of the Sub41 126610 in 2020, the SD43 is still king. The badass Sub.

I discovered the TT blue Sub 126613LB last year and it was a bit of a revelation. I wasn't exactly extatic about two-tone, until I saw the Bluesy and tried it on. I'm a convert since. In spite of not wearing it everyday, it's perfect on a night out. Ideally I would have prefered a TT SD43 Bluesy if Rolex would make one, but the blue Sub is plenty flashy already. The showy Sub.

Love this thread op. And agree fully with the aforementioned.
Don't get me wrong, I am still a Rolex (and other hyped models) fanboy. Just choose to sit on the bench during this melee

Beautiful Montreal Carrera! I was debating whether getting this, the Green dial, or the silver dial!

I returned a white 116500 to the AD because it did nothing for me. Bought a white 116503 instead, really like the looks of the TT Daytona. AD was floored.

I believe that I’m not a hype collector. My collection is quite diverse and while it is Rolex heavy I do like the so called hype watches over their less hype brethren

So what about your collection or collection strategy/past decisions/desires PROVES that you are against the hype (whether instagram hype or common forum opinion). I recognize no one needs to prove anything to anyone - just hoping for a fun conversation.

Here is mine:

I like the WG numeral "T-rex" hand explorer 1.

I prefer my Breitling Superocean 42 ii blue over my YM 40 blue and recently parted with the latter against most everyone's advice on here.

I parted with the hulk during its peak hype time because I found it "too green".

I am on the cusp of parting with the SD4K against popular wisdom.

I love Seiko!

I think the white dial DJ 41 is clearly the best over the blue and others.

I am personally not a big fan of the Daytona line and have never tried to acquire one.

I liked the white milgauss before it became more fashionable.

*

Now I'm sure you guys have been in the game a lot longer than me and have better ones! Would love to hear.

I traded a Sub-Date for an Explorer II...and then sold all of my Rolex watches and only wear Tudor and Sinn now. That's about as anti-hype as it gets.

I bought an Explorer over the BLNR when you could actually find them both in a case!

1) Have never owned a Rolex.

2) Got an IWC Mark XV when everybody else got Subs some 20 years ago.

3) Said IWC Mark XV continues to be my most worn watch to this day.

4) Until recently I preferred my little 34mm 3998P Calatrava over a 5711 blue that arrived later.

I handled a 16710 last week, and my first reaction was, "I wouldn't pay $5k for this, let alone $14k."

I also don't really like the Daytona, and I think two tone is pretty cool. I do really like Submariners though, so in that way, I follow the hype!

Easy answer for me: I don't have a collection.

I purchased a Datejust, and now I wear it. Eventually, if it needs to be serviced someday, then for the interim I'll just get a new battery put in the Bulova Marine Star I had been wearing. Afterward I'll go back to my "only."

Despite owning and wearing most the 5 digit GMT’s I still settle for the LN above all the other more ‘hyped’ colour carnations and wear a ceramic LN to this day.

I’ve refused the Batman multiple times as it’s just not for me.

Last Rolex I turned down was a Daytona at MSRP.

And I’m about to buy a Cellini with any luck.

No hype references here except the ones I’ve genuinly liked before the hype train even left the station. I buy and wear what I like.
