Being off-topic is not considered a crime and sure, that sometimes leads to threads that topic-wise seem meaningless but through their absurdness are a source of fun to many. That alone gives those threads meaning.

The questions that you referred to are tolerated because of several reasons. The question at hand maybe very valid from the newbies' point of view. There are fora that deal with those questions following a different approach. "Have you read the FAQ already?". Or sometimes a downright harsh slap on the wrist for being so ignorant. That is one way to deal with it. A bit intimidating. I personally don't like this.

Applying heavy-handed moderation is not the TRF way but believe me, when it IS applied there's a very good reason for this. Don't get me wrong, I sometimes grit my teeth if someone asks for the 1435th time what polishing cloth to use but that still is no reason to cut off that person just above the knees.

And then there's the incredible self-policing and self-healing capability of this forum. If someone's deliberately playing the fool in an attempt to aggravate the others, our members will put that person in his or her place. And the MOD crew will escort that person to the door if necessary.

So yes, it sometimes can be a bit annoying but dealing with this the way we do has made this forum into a people place, not an 'I'm holier than thou' place.

Should I put my watch crown up or crown down before I go to sleep?

So true, but you would be perfectly justified in performing a below the knee amputation, or better yet, gagging and binding the poster using his or her polishing cloth of choice.

Getting back on topic............

TRF is unique with hundreds of new sign on-s every month... with that brings a sense of belonging and new members, for the most part, want to join in and make a contribution..

Sometimes that contribution is less than technical or has been discussed the previous month....but as the member hangs around, they have a good chance of becoming very knowledgeable about Rolex watches....and even other stuff too.

But, if the membership only asked new, unheard questions, and only gave answers like "Use the search function", or "We discussed that last week"; then we would be like every other forum and hardly anybody would ever tune in.......

IMHO,

I'm personally not bothered by the trivial posts, I think that they are great conversation starters. It's great that the forum made the technical forum and the vintage forum, so that members that are more interested in more substantive issues have a resource without having to filter through some of the trivial posts in the general rolex discussion area.

Just my 2 cents.

Ah, another success story. We should all congratulate ourselves on what we do best here - hijack threads. That's what makes TRF the best forum around.

Indeed. Without our creative, first-class hijacking, this board would just be about watches.
