Does the PM feel any more special? Well, in my case I don’t like yellow nor RG, specifically because I don’t appreciate the connotations some have towards those wearing that color of gold. Hence, I only buy WG which to the untrained eye is SS.

I bought the smurf (now sold) because I wanted the blue bezel/dial on one of the best watches ever designed. I didn’t buy it for the WG.

I bough the YM II in WG because I detest the garish (in my view) blue bezel on this variant. The only variant without the blue bezel is the WG, so I bought that.

My old TT watch is a zenith Daytona I bought in the 90s. Back then gold was all the rage. I haven’t parted with it for sentimental reasons, but I rarely wear it (precisely because of the YG)

I bought a CHNR new from the AD to see if my mind could be changed concerning yellow or rose gold. It didn’t work and I sold it within 2 months.

My 2 cents
Thanks for an excellent post on your experience.

The RG photographs beautifully. Haven’t worn it in the flesh. So I might have the same experience as you.

I have my watches insured with Homeowner's insurance and they insure for what the watch is appraised for.....not market value. I think you'd have a hard time convincing your homeowner's insurance that the SS Daytona you paid 13.1K for is worth 35K. On the other hand my 116509 is appraised for 41K and that's why I'd rather risk that one than say my blue Sky Dweller which is also appraised for what I paid for it....15K. I could be wrong about this but I don't think that's likely the case. Perhaps other speciality insurer's do things differently but if they do the rate would likely be higher. Nothing for nothing.

When I went to a 2 tone Nautilus 3800 for everyday wear I learned that the flat polished gold bezel scratches if you look at it hard.....and shows it. The same scratch you can't see on a Jubilee band or a fluted bezel shows very obviously on an Oyster bracelet with polished center links or a Nautilus/brushed flat bezel. If you don't believe me look under a Loupe or microscope (which I have access to given that I am an eye surgeon). My 2 tone Datejust still looks pristine from 3 feet to the naked eye but under a Loupe the gold parts look like the surface of the moon.
Well, I will then consider myself blessed that I have never help a loupe in my 60 plus years!

I haven't done it. But that's not to say I wouldn't.

I sold 4 SS for a platinum Daytona. I have numerous other SS but have been changing to more PM. I do plan to add two SS back but this time at retail so collection is shaping up.

I can sympathise with your dilemma. I am waiting on a Day Date RG Olive dial. I have considered parting with a couple of SS pieces to fund the purchase but I am struggling to mentally allow myself to part with anything. I'm sure I will regret it if I let them go as they cannot be replaced at retail again rom my AD.

Surely depends on the country and insurance company, but I insured e.g. my 5712 Nautilus for 100 000 euro based on the fact that is would be the price (or was at that moment) for replacing it as a new watch from the secondary market due to the impossibility to get it from a Patek AD at list price..ie. market value.

The SS has been fine for me for over 50 years.

It depends on the watches in play. I traded several SS toward a white gold smurf, which is my fav watch ever.
