The hype began when rumours of watch gone be out collection started.

Suddenly, everybody loves the ugly greenwatch ( as they said).

I bought mine in 2015 in France and she was sleeping in a safe.......

TJ Miller wore it in "Silicon Valley". That definitely started the hype. Than when he was arrested it became the "bad boy" watch and prices started skyrocketing. So if you wanna let the world know that TJ Miller is your homeboy and you aint afraid of no ghosts, you wear a hulk.
Also the avengers movie had a hand.
and the muppet movie, think kermit wore it on the log singing the rainbow connection

If you look back in the forum archives on threads on the Hulk, you will find the two watches at odds were the LVc and the newly released BLNR. At that time it was all about which do you like more and the new BLNR was clearly the favorite with is shiny new two color ceramic bezel. At the time, the Submariner line was more popular than the GMT line and the comparisons brought the green Sub attention to more people. Both watches were similarly priced and accessible. In a way the BLNR made the LVc/Hulk popular with this comparison.

I agree Mystro I traded my BLNR for the LVc real close in trade value at 8 Grand..

I've been offered Hulk for MSRP by my AD right before it was discontinued (we've been aware of it for a while). I opt out anyway because to me it's an ugly, too much green watch.

It’s good that you passed on it for the next person who would love to own it. There are many who would have flipped it. I am sure that AD had a list of interest buyers who would have loved to own that watch and yet they offered it to someone who never asked for it.

It is discontinued & i find it truly unique among the usual Sub because of the dial which is very very nice.

With the 'John Mayer' Daytona there was an actual ground zero of when and why the hype started.

I'd say that before the Hulk Hype other than new releases and of course the steel Daytona Current Rolex watches usually sold under retail price.
Even the Kermit wasn't really difficult to get when it was discontinued.

I'd just like to know Why the Hulk model started all this Rolex Hype ?

I believe the hulk is the only steel sub ever made with a colored dial--makes sense this would be a hyped one imo.

I'm not sure that's what actually started the hype but its my understanding that this comment is true... which makes the watch even more special in my eyes.

I bought a new Black sub from perpetualman88 back in 2012 for like $7500. This was my first Deal on TRF. Wore it for about a month. The colors just didn’t pop enough for me on the wrist. I wasn’t in love with it. I texted David and told him my thoughts and that I was thinking about the Hulk. He helped me out and traded me into a new hulk for very little extra money. Maybe a couple hundred bucks. And the love story Began!

Never thought about trading or selling this particular piece…

You bought a black sub and didn't like it because the colours didn't pop enough? Hhmmm, OK then... You clearly like a colourful watch!

Is it a coincidence that over the past 5 years or so, other manufacturers have introduced a plethora of green dial models? Or have I imagined it?

It's getting more attention and the number of people wanting them seems to be increasing at a time when the number of extremely good-conditioned specimens are actively decreasing.

I do like this post and the opinions of my fellow members. The Hulk is not for everyone and that is ok. Not every watch has to be. The values on the watches are steadily moving up and it makes it difficult for casual owners to ignore significant financial windfalls that selling the watches would bring. I have bought/sold/traded the Hulk numerous times and have always made good money off them even before this current market took over. The other factor is I have always enjoyed owning and wearing them. I am in my current Hulk for about 10k and I bought it on speculation it would be discontinued. Low and behold it was and the price has marched up. Usually at 100% profit I would say it is a no brainer to sell but now I am at 200% profit to move it. It will get there and then I will either put up or shut up. I think it is great that the watches are doing so well but it has killed some of my joy in wearing the watches as the values make it difficult not to be aware all the time. There is also a cost of ownership, insurance, safe, alarm, etc. I am just rambling now so I will stop. The Hulk is great. Even if I am destine to sell and admire from afar.

Great post William. I do agree and I am in at $8500.00 in 2018 I think but really like the piece and have not sold still in the stable

I had a few drinks walked into my AD and they had a few in stock around 2013 or so. Picked one up and then had buyers remorse. I didn’t like the fat lugs and got bored of the green so sold it for a loss. No one knew what would happen years later. Now it’s all hype I don’t even like the watch still but would have kept it has I known. Luckily I got my 116500 white at retail in 2017 and find it a far better looking watch by a landslide.

Ahhh the good ol days of having a few cocktails and venturing over to the AD to make some bad decisions…

The Hulk was “at the right place at the right time.”

Investors hit the Rolex market looking for unique, recently discontinued models. An all green Sub was never produced before and just ended its run.

I bought a black Sub around the time the Hulk hype was starting. I recall seeing the hype start and guys touting the investment potential; but I couldn’t see myself wearing a green watch.

Today when I see a Hulk, I am impressed. But I think it’s more about the rarity than anything else.

2007, I offered myself my first Sub 16610LN for 3800€ at an AD, for financial reasons, I saw myself obliged to part with it during the 2008 crisis 😢 (sold for 3100€). 2009, I want to have fun with color again, a Sub 16610LV is available at Dubail Paris, I buy it for 4300€ (a 10% discount was given to me that day). I parted with it in 2013 for €5,000. 2016 I buy the Hulk while 80% of Sub wearers don't like it! Purchase value 8300€. She is always with me.
TODAY,
The 2007 16610LN cost €11,000
The 2009 16610LV costs €18,000.
The 2016 Hulk costs €24,000.
It's getting hard to afford a Sub like I did 15 years ago.

I'll play

Bought in 2016 in memory of losing my border collie, they weren't popular in fact when I was talking to the AD and I said I want the green dial not the black she went "oh oh, yes can get one of those easily".

No idea why it became so popular, it’s not for me, never was.

Many buy for fomo. So many second hand watch dealers nowadays

I bought the Hulk simply because I didn't want a TT or Black Sub, and couldn't afford PM. Also green being my favorite color doesn't hurt. I wasn't able to afford the watch until last year paid $20.8k no regrets.
