Incidentally you can also buy genuine papers on eBay though they're not cheap. I'm not sure why buys them though since all of them have individual serial numbers printed on the paper.

Indeed. I recall display cases with all kinds of diamond bezels in the 80’s, and they really tried to upsell them.

Seen this story too many times. Even if you buy the watch brand new from the AD always check the watch and paperwork serial numbers are a match before you leave the shop. Doesn't matter the brand, always check.

Yes, sort of! I think the OP means a box like my 1996 14060 came in...wood covered by a sort of green leatherette/fake leather. This is my Sub in its original box:

The transaction was completed 3 years ago. Whatever mix up that might have happened, I think too much has time passed to remediate it.

Unless you have definitive proof, if I was the grey dealer, how would he know the watch was the same one he sold you or frankly everything in the package was the same.

I would actually be shocked if he was willing to do something.... maybe... just maybe... like others have said, take the watch back at what you paid for it before. If the market has gone up (which it has), he's not going to pay you current market value for it. That's kind of a crazy expectation given that 3 years have gone by with potential gaps in information.

But I can't say this enough, check absolutely everything new or used.

there should be no grace period, any reputable dealer should at least offer a full refund under this circumstances. what's the point of buy the seller otherwise?

What do they have to think about, seems like a dealer should be able to give you a pretty swift, if not immediate, yea or nay.

Is the dealer contesting your claim, are they thinking they just mixed up papers between watches ? Or were they aware the papers were incorrect and hoped you wouldn't check...?

they may need time to contact the seller first, and find out what went wrong in the first place.

Should have bought it at LL Bean.

Actually LL Bean recently stopped taking returns on ANYTHNG. Too much abuse.

Not sure how you read my post. But yes I'm sure any reputable dealer will gladly give him his money back (price paid 3 years ago) if the watch goes back to them in the same condition. But that's not the op wants, he wants the market value difference given to him..... Which for sure the dealer is not under any obligation to do. Dealer made a mistake, but the buyer here didn't check either and that's also a mistake. Long past normal grace period so if the dealer says he wouldn't want to refund (he's entitled but I find it hard to believe since the watch is worth way more now) I wouldn't be surprised either. I've made this exact mistake already with a dealer and chalked it up to learning a lesson. Bought a "full set" but ended up discovering unmatched paperwork. Never again.

Your expectation is that they will refund the current retail market value of the watch?

If it was lower would you accept it?

Ok, I thought not.

Have you watched ‘The Castle’?

So? Any update?

Or, is this one of those threads that the OP puts out then disappears into the ether?

Thus leaving us all wondering if it's real or a Troll... and regretting spending time reading.

A smart grey will just give OP a bit more than what he paid as a good will gesture and take the watch back. Then resell it higher as a naked watch.

Full value at current retail? That's too much and not reasonable IMO.

Whatever the watch is has surely increased significantly in value.
Unfortunately the seller can say you are at fault too since you didn’t at least check the documents immediately upon purchase.
I would think there’s no statute of limitations for watch buying unless it’s a fake watch like the John Mayer fiasco.
