Hi Kerwi,

I’ve seen some bad advice in this thread. Be wary. Don’t email your AD.

Take it from me as someone who has no purchase history, lived hours away from an AD, and has gotten multiple watches recently without crazy long wait times.

Call your AD, tell them you live far away and confirm they are the AD that serves your area. Try to make sure you’re speaking with a Rolex specialist and not just an administrative assistant or something.

Once you’re talking to the right person at the right store, tell them your general story. That you’re trying to buy your first Rolex and that you’re a long way away and it’s not easy for you to come in to the store but you’d like to come in and meet them in person and build a relationship and talk about which watch you’d like to buy. Nail down the references you’re really after and focus on just 1 or 2. It sounds like you said BLRO. That is a hard to get reference but not impossible. I also saw you mention that you’re price conscious so a gold GMT BLRO might be too expensive for you. But they often have payment plans. Something to consider. Also the BLNR and rootbeer would be easier to obtain as well. But only buy exactly what you want, if that’s a BLRO in steel then stick with that.

Then plan to go in person and make a day trip out of it, try to do something more with your trip than just visiting the store then heading straight home. So it feels like less of a chore.

Don’t be intimidated by sales staff or the situation. They want to help and sell watches they don’t have anything to gain by putting you off. Just be a normal person in the store. They are professionals and can read you like a book. They will know if you are a flipper or not. If you’re a decent person they will want to help you out.

I find it just as exciting to get on the list for something as getting the call. When I get on the list I consider the watch mine pretty much. I’ve already decided to buy it and budgeted for it in my head. It’s like ordering food at a restaurant. It might take 15 or 45 minutes for the meal to be prepared but once you’ve ordered and settled in your work is pretty much done and you know what you’re getting. Then you can just relax and learn more about Rolex and the reference you’re getting and just do other things while you wait.

The other thing that helps is to check in with a phone call or in person if you’re in the area every 2-3 months. Just say hi and that you’re still interested in the watch and you appreciate their time and consideration. No gifts no funny business. It’s not a hassle for them. It just lets them know you’re a real person and still interested.

A BLRO in a busy area could take 2-3-4 years. But eventually you should get exactly what you want. There’s a possibility by then it’ll be replaced by a new reference. You gotta see if your reference is still around each year. If it’s cancelled or updated just manage your goals with your sales associate. But Pepsi will probably be around for a long time.

I’d highly recommend not going 2nd hand for many reasons; especially as a first and potentially only Rolex.

Since you are asking us....

First off, thank you for your service...

Make a day of it...dont let the PTSD get in the way of looking for your Rolex! My anxiety (i named it Gizmo) (at times, i have to curse it out). now we got that out of the way!

Go there and try on those Rolexes...see how they feel on your wrist, see which one talks to you..the one that you fall in love with! you have been wanting for all these years...

Talk to the AD/SA...tell them your story...they will know and believe you..i know i do, just by what you have said...tell them a couple of your stories...

I wish you the best of luck on looking and your service and to your new life and new adventures...you will be staring at the Rolex on your wrist sooner than you think!

Hey buddy. Realistically, you'll have to go grey market/second hand.

Thank you for your service.

You are not going to get a Pepsi in todays market as a first time watch buyer.

The most interesting thing about your post is that you are considering the white gold version. If you have the means to buy a more expensive Rolex than I think you would be better off going after more expensive models.

This is the hardest year so far to buy watches. I have asked every AD in Toronto for a rose gold Sky-D and I have not had one call back.

For a first watch in stainless steal I would do classic date or no date sub, do not waist your time asking for a green bezel sub.

First timers get subs all the time, GTM not so much.

I think the GMT rootbeer is fantastic and a lot more attainable. Also consider the TT Daytona, not impossible to get and an amazing watch that is often overlooked.

Don't listen to those here saying its impossible.

I have zero purchase history and I got a steel pepsi on jubilee as my first watch from an AD.

In my extremely limited experience, ADs like earnest people and you seem like you are earnest. I would never pay grey prices, its crazy. Try MSRP. All that can happen is you don't get a watch, which is currently where you stand now. Nothing to lose.

edit: I got my Pepsi in January 2022, very much in today's market.

Good Afternoon Folks

Thanks again for all the kind responses and advice, I am overwhelmed by the wonderful community present here at TRF and by the wonderful and kind people prowling through these forums.

I have since been in touch with an AD in Toronto, encouraged by the advice here to at least have a conversation and express my intents. I believe it was a productive conversation. They seem to understand the difficulty that I'm going through and have indicated that is not an unrealistic expectation. We have since booked an appointment (during the least populated time of the store) for me to go in to try the watch on and have a conversation.

I hope it is not in vain but the most I can do is earnestly try.

I've said before that i am not willing to pay 3X MSRP for a used GMT Master II but the sentiment that i should just go for a used watch persists. I understand that i said i budget for a SS but could stretch for a WG however that does not mean i'm going to pay WG pricing for an SS. I am also not able (or inclined) to purchase 20 or 30 thousand dollars worth of other watches to secure an allocation.

I guess you can call me naive (or an idiot, it is an idiot's guide after all) but i thought the barrier to entry was the cost. If you were able to save it and work for it, you'll be able to purchase it. It's what has made Rolex special to me. It is on the arm of Celebreties and kings but also pilots and operators. It works for all.

To be honest the idea that it is unobtainable unless you have an "in" with an AD or you are a big roller changes the brand enough for me to be less interested.

I hope this does not offend anyone and I genuinely do appreciate all the help and kindness.

Respectfully

Thank you for your service, I am an ex- Torontonian who lives in Bay area now.

My suggestion is to celebrate your achievement and milestone with perhaps an older 16710, or some other (more readily available) brand like Tudor GMT for example, and when you finally get the Rolex piece that you like from your AD after a short or long wait, either keep this placeholder watch or sell it at that time.

There are a few trusted sellers and watch dealers in Toronto area that I have seen through some Canadian watch buddies on Instagram that might help you with that.

A long wait doesn't have to be a boring wait.

That actually sounds very encouraging. Lots of people here get blown off by AD's. I would take that fact that you have an appointment as a good sign. And plenty of people get a Rolex by being sincere and persistent. Maybe a bit lucky too these days. But the rumor is out there also that Rolex is encouraging AD's to at least entertain the idea of occasionally selling a popular model to first time buyers.

You are doing all the right things. You just have to be patient now. There's no way that AD would set up an appt with you if they were not going to get you one. I think the only thing you have to do is temper your expectations.

If you expect to walk out with a Pepsi that is probably not going to happen. If you keep in touch/show up occasionally and continue to show your desire for the brand and that reference I believe they will get it to you eventually. (for that reference I would say 1-2 years is fair)

Nice try though, back to Twitter with u.

I just recently bought three watches with a dealer in Toronto, he is probably the largest gray dealer in all of Canada. He is very fair and excellent to work with. If you are interested, I could send you his info. But, in my experience, it looks like most AD will only deal with a back room deal with a cash envelope as a little gift to them for their hard work in achieving the watch at MSRP.

Well, I did DM you directly and offered a suggestion that might help you out.

What i'm offering?

Hmm, maybe the proper use of words that have strong meanings?

Maybe, hopefully with this education, the OP will stop throwing around the "racist" word likes it's meaningless?

You have good taste sir, I love the Pepsi. If you're good with WG, get the WG one, if you're going to reward yourself, that watch feels even more substantial. If you're talking grey, I'd go WG like some others have said.

I believe that new WG GMTs will be in the $60k USD range for Pepsis and $95k for the meteorite one.

Good day folks,

I hope everyone is having a wonderful long weekend.

I thought i would post a final update and let everyone know the conclusion to "The (Canadian) Idiots guide to buying a rolex"

I contacted an AD and had a long phone conversation trying to sensitize them to the situation. They indicated that they understood and seemed to try to be very accommodating and for that they have my thanks. At the end of that conversation i felt brave enough and confident enough to make an appointment to go meet the AD and see the GMT Master II they had as an exhibition piece.

I tried to take on many of the suggestions however at the end of the day, like i mentioned before, my days of shmoozing are long behind me. I have a stutter and i get very anxious and nervous in public spaces and there is not much that i can do to fix that today.

I thought the meeting had gone well, I got to ask many nerdy questions about the watch i've always wanted (To be honest i was hoping i would hate it but i didn't)

I felt a little confused leaving as there was no firm indication of anything. I was told "We don't know what comes in, it might be a bit of a wait but we would contact you if it came in"

This trip was genuinely a nightmare but i left thinking it had accomplished something.

Today i received a message from my Rep saying :

"Dear XXXXX,

This is XXXX from XXXXXX. It was a pleasure meeting you few days ago in our showroom.

I wish to thank you for coming in and taking your time with me for your Rolex inquiry.

Regretfully the GMT Master II featuring blue and red Cerachrom bezel in ceramic in Oystersteel, or in white gold you have expressed interest are currently unavailable at this time. Nevertheless, I will keep you in mind and continuously keep in communication as we receive timepieces in the coming future.

If you have any further questions or other inquiries, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Thank you and I wish you a lovely day."

You can call me stupid (It's an idiots guide) but i don't really know what this means. It reads very succinctly like a f*ck off.

I have thought about it and I don't think i am able to go through that again with another AD (And perhaps another and another) and i'm not going to buy used at 3x msrp (or hell lets be honest not even at 1x msrp it's used, it makes no sense to me to pay more for something someone has already gotten use out of)

So i've decided that this is the end of the journey for me. I will not be attempting any more inquiries as i believe the emails and phonecalls are wasting peoples time and i am not able to put on a persona of a person who is capable of buying 100k in watches.

Thank you to everyone who contributed and i wish you all the best. If i have learned one thing from this experience, it's that the people at TRF and within the community are wonderful, welcoming and kind individuals sharing a wonderful passion.

They’re essentially saying they have enough preferred clients to provide homes for every Pepsi they get.

Essentially they don’t want any new clients for that watch, which is absolutely fair enough. Yes they are politely telling you to pound sand.

You’d maybe have had more emcouragement with a datejust or even an explorer 1.

Keep in touch with them monthly to stay on their radar screen. I think they will come through with your Pepsi. It may take a while though.

I am a month away from my military retirement and I thought it would be an opportune time to treat myself to my first Rolex. (Don't let my account age fool you. I made this account very ambitiously in 2011)

The obstacles that stand in the way seem a little daunting because I do have PTSD and am no longer the sweetest and most outgoing person, specially in public.

I have called one AD in Toronto who told me to come in to try on a watch for the exhibition program but made it very clear that they do not have any watches for sale.

I live a little outside of Toronto (Prince Edward County) and as much as i'd love to just drive 4 hours to look at a watch I've known i wanted since 2011 it isn't really feasible to just get told that i can't put money down for one or have a chance at purchasing it.

A lot of the information here is geared at someone capable of going into multiple AD's and building rapport and those aren't things I'm going to become good at.

So i guess my question is.

Is there a point in further pursuing this ?

Or is the idea of purchasing a new Rolex in 2022 just too complicated for an idiot's guide ?
You want a Rolex aye

I would not give up all hope. They may just be advising that you are not front of the line.

This doesn't change the fact that what you said is a racist and stereotypical comment.

Imagine if you made a statement about African-American being criminals and then sent statistics to back this up. It is still incredibly racist.

And Craigdwh you look like a racist skinhead already I won't even address you beyond this comment.
