Nicknames are definitely a new phenomenon.
Do you remember JJ Arani writing poems and stuff (waxing poetic) about his "Bluey"

I'd say guys here would skewer him for that.

Rest in piece.

Haha yes, I should have included the Bluesy in my list,

Pepsi
Coke
Bluesy
Jumbo

And why not add the “Bathtub” Porsche while we’re at it?

I have mixed feelings about watch nicknames, but certainly don’t think it’s appropriate to insult people who do use them.

The Pepsi and Coke GMTs are an easy way to distinguish them because of their bezel color. When the BLNR first came out, I called it that. I don’t know where “Batman” came from, but it makes sense. Dealers have been using “Batman” and “Batgirl” (even though I don’t think a jubilee is feminine). Likewise, when the Sub LV first came out, I called it the LV. My friend bought one at the time. Kermit, Hulk etc. are common descriptions now, and it makes sense to distinguish them, because Rolex makes more than one Sub with some green on it somewhere.

I’m going to refer to the new GMT as the Destro or the leftie, because it comes only in that configuration. If you want to call it Sprite or Riddler or whatever I don’t think you’re stupid, brain-dead sheep who mindlessly follow what’s on the internet. As I recall, the late beloved JJ Irani referred to his TT blue Submariner by a nickname…”Bluesy.” I don’t recall any invective (as opposed to good natured ribbing that went both ways) hurled his way along the lines of what’s been typed on this thread.

Some people give nicknames to their cars. I don’t think any less of people who call their BMW’s “Beamers” or “Bimmers.”

Serial numbers are helpful references because we are collectors, and the serial numbers distinguish features, especially on watches that aren’t made any more, eg a 16710 versus a 16750 or 1675, etc. I don’t have the inclination to memorize every serial number of every Rolex made in the last 20 years, so if someone here posts “Hulk Incoming,” I know exactly what watch is being discussed.

In another thread someone actually said if anyone came up to him and referred to his watch by a nickname like batman he would throw the watch in the trash. Lol.

Still remember prices back then. Basically at ADs.

10-15% discount on TT
15+% for solid gold

Yeah.... Try that these days.

Every watch has a different serial number.

Notice my username? I'm using LV! Wow, mind blown!

Fritzli, Riddle me this, what are all these usernames I see? So silly and immature! After all, isn't a username a nickname?

Nicknames used to be a fun way to refer to watches. Also makes it easier for common people to relate to the subject discussed. Like if one said “Pepsi”, it’s quite easily understood that the watch in context has a blue/red bezel. Non harmful, easy to engage with non watch people.

The problem nowadays is that a lot of overnight, appear out of nowhere grey dealers like to give watches a nickname to push a narrative and hype up a watch for one and only reason - to make it cool and drive prices up. A lot of grey dealers don’t actually know the reference number for the watch. You can see so many times on YouTube how they get it wrong. I have seen a guy calling the 5164A a 5968G. Come on, when someone is paying 120k for a watch, at least know the product they are trying to sell. Giving it nicknames is fun and all, but at least be competent in their job.

The VTNR is a left handed GMT. It’s unique, divisive in opinion but it’s still a good watch. It doesn’t need a nickname for someone to tell the world that he’s wearing a riddler or a sprite.

He ran a big credit scam in Las Vegas. Call center, etc.... used to PM and back and forth with him. Cool dude.

But if I was running an illegal operation I would not be posting lambos and Rollies online.

Not sure I'm tracking since the link has no context. We fundamentally agree on nicknames, I think.

I can't remember reference numbers, unless I own them. I know what a Hulk and a Smurf are, don't ask me their reference numbers. Are nicknames dumb, maybe. However, they do have utility for minds like mine.

I don't remember all the reference numbers either. Especially the ones I never intended to purchase.

Nicknames are here to stay. Like someone said before you can't overturn the internet when everyone piles on a name.

I just don't like the constant lobbying for what the name will be. Everyone seems to want naming rights. The best nicknames come about naturally, not forced

It’s the left handed GMT, end of discussion.

I would just refer it to as 126720VTNR, or VTNR for short. I'd call it the left handed GMT as well.

As some fellow member mentioned earlier, I don't exactly oppose having nicknames for these watches, but nowadays it just feels forced and cringy.
