As always, the best Rolex is the one on your wrist. I'll stick with that rule.

I know what you mean, Lee You're absolutely right. I always appreciate your input. You're the one who taught me how to use the bezel of the YM before the start of a regata! (triangle on the seconds hand, not the minutes as I originally thought )

It's just that I was debating between YM, TT blue Sub and SD43 and it occurred to me that the Bluesy was a great 80s watch and kind of fit the movie. Just for fun .

What do you guys think? What would you wear?

There is literally a watch named the Top Gun with the same logo etc.. How is this even a debate? IWC top gun Chrono!

But... You did say Rolex. So the Pan Am?

Indeed there is, check out post #22. Maybe the watch is too obvious, or cheesy perhaps? Not sure about that one.

Yeah, we seem to have many supporters of the Pepsi, even among navy pilots. I didn't expect that.

Uncool. Maverick wouldn't wear a watch with the Top Gun logo on the dial. Hang on, we're talking sequel of a cheesy movie from the 80s...

I wore my NTTD omega when seeing the movie. It's just for fun Peter.

Do you remember "fun" ?

I think he wears a porsche design in the movie. Otherwise a GMT would seem appropriate.

Admittedly Breitling, Omega and Bremont do a great job of marketing directly to military pilots--they make sporty aviation watches which appeal to young pilots. They would custom design dials for military units I was in at a heavily discounted prices which appealed to pilots. But as promotions increased along with salaries you would see a few more Rolex GMTs amongst senior leadership--pilots who appreciated the finest in horology. Well, Maverick is now in that category. Hence, Rolex GMT BLRO on his wrist and mine when I watch the new Top Gun.

In 1965 as a newly minted private pilot, I bought a Breitling AOPA cosigned Navitimer Cosmonaute. I could never get used to the 24 hour dial, and fiddling with the E6B computer on the bezel was a futile exercise in any turbulence. I eventually sold it, but it sure was impressive looking. The Pepsi is much more practical and useful.

Yeah Chadri, that's the spirit !

I did the same thing back in 2006 wearing the PO2500C 45.5 when seeing Casino Royale. The funny thing is I didn't know Daniel Craig would be wearing my exact same watch. I was in for a huge surprise. Felt great.

Hmmm, as one of those more senior guys hasn't been my experience. Can't recall seeing a fellow O6 or Flags wearing a Rolex, doesn't mean they aren't out there. Lots of Bremont's, including multiple MB1s acquired the hard way. Seems reasonable that Maverick would go for a GMT after being retired/retained for so many years as a Captain. My guess is he would wearthe Garmin Fenix that all the pointy nose guys got after the great physiological episode/OBOGGS crisis of 2017/18.

Fun conversation regardless and completely not germane to wearing a cool watch to the movie. I'll have on my Sub when I watch it a week early on base.

What Tom Cruise actually wore at the Cannes Film Festival.

Vacheron Constantin Overseas Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin.

(pictures from a post of our forum member Vesper Lynd)

In the movie, Tom was wearing the Porsche Design Orfina Chronograph, identical to the one from the original Topgun.

That was a lot of years ago, but I get asked this question a lot. Truth be told, I had a Coke GMT, which for the most part stayed in the safe in my stateroom on the carrier. When flying I usually had on a G shock.

Right There With You. 16613LB is my favorite too. It was my LAST Rolex purchase. Immediately after that purchase, The Prices Went CRAZY. So, I am currently priced out of the market...
