LOL I realized that right after I hit "send"

Here is my dedicated travel watch by the way. Love this piece and far and away the most accurate watch I own.

That’s pretty much my opinion as well.

I frequently travel where I’ve been before. So, I wear Rolex there, generally.

As others have said, a $5k Rolex 10 years ago, is a $10k Rolex now. With a similar principle in mind, I usually take the Seiko or Oris to places where selling my watch can alter a person’s life.

Be carefull, they tried rob my dad's Datejust II Wimbledon in Moraira Spain last week. A gypsy woman spoke to him at the gate of our house asking for a job and tried to steal his ring and Rolex. Luckiley he shouted my mom saw it as well and started shouting heavily and she ran off. The ring was already turned and clasped opened by the woman, he widened his hand so she couldn't slip it off.

Luckily nothing worse happend.

Tip don't speak to strangers and run away.

I´ve never been to the Spanish islands, but I have been all around Spain! Everywhere except Barcelona felt safe. There's a lot of street crime there, and I had a close call outside a tapas bar some years ago. By asking your question you're obviously a bit worried, so buy yourself and your wife G-Shocks and leave your Rolexes at home. Congrats on paying off your mortgage and enjoy a care-free, Rolex-free holiday!

Good advice.
I’ve not ever worried about the monetary loss, however I do
not have another a** hanging up in the closet at home.

The loud music might seriously challenge your watches anti-shock properties.

If I’m not going to take my Rolex, I’m certainly not going to take my Tudor Black Bays as the family/(vintage) Submariner DNA is strong.

Despite being more under the radar than Rolex, others easily recognise BB’s as a luxury watch from the Rolex stable and are thus desirable.

These people aren't stupid. Quite the opposite. They know what a Rolex is specifically. They aren't after watches that are similar or share DNA, they are after watches that can net them the most money as quickly as possible.

A Black Bay may share some lineage with a Submariner, but it is NOT a Submariner. A BB may net them a thousand or two. A Sub will get them $15K. They are well aware of the difference.

Wearing any expensive watch carries some risk with it. But I really don't think you have much to fear wearing a Black Bay in most places tourists travel. A Rolex is a different story.

For precious metal Rolexes, I agree that the risk is significant.

Having said that £2-£4,000 for a BB is still a substantial amount. So if it’s the only thing available, it’s at risk.

Just look at the commenters who say iPhones are at risk in Barcelona.

Sure, and I did/do acknowledge that wearing any watch of value places the wearer at some level of risk. Even an Apple watch can make you a target in some locations. So it's all about assessing the risk where you are. But I think we can all agree that wearing a Rolex right now puts you at a significantly higher risk of assault and theft than would a Black Bay or other mid-tier watches. Rolex carries with it a brand cachet that is matched by only a few very high priced brands out there (Patek, AP, etc.). Everyone in the world knows Rolex and knows what they are worth which makes them an easy watch to steal and re-sell for significant sums of money. We all love Tudor and Grand Seiko. But to most non-WIS they are relative unknowns.

If you wear a watch that looks anything like a Rolex from 20 feet away it's a Rolex to a criminal. People kill for a Seiko. I suggest leave it at home and post lots of travel pics to let people your are not home. Then someone can go in to your home and grab it. The only way to win this game is to buy fake Rollies and the jokes on everyone.

S7gpt - I've literally just got back from Ibiza.

Stayed in a nice hotel in Santa Eulalia. Rolexes everywhere, every 5th person in the hotel, hotel staff, staff at the beach clubs. Also some seriously expensive PP and APs on the wrists of a few. Both the wife and I wore ours

If you're off clubbing and off your nut in San Antonio, maybe not. But the rest of the island was perfectly fine.

Why would buying a fake 'Rollie' win the game?

You still get attacked / mugged - but feel even worse after as you know that it was all for something worth Jack all.
All that grief for next to nothing.

I don't get how that's a 'win'.

That is, by far, the dumbest thing I've read on TRF today.

You say criminals will attack you for anything that "looks like a Rolex from 20 feet away" and that they will even kill for a lowly Seiko so you suggest that they go out a buy a fake watch that is imitating the exact thing you are telling people to leave at home!

It's a very cunning plan!

With high inflation and the cost of living crisis, it allows the average working man the chance to get mugged at a very reasonable cost.

No need to splash out at Rolex prices to get turned over. Get the same result for only a fraction of the money!

Now if I could only decipher the bit about posting pictures while away on holiday to avoid getting robbed at home......??

Box and papers Bro!

And right on cue, this story appears in my local paper about an ex Man City footballer getting mugged for his Datejust in San Antonio, Ibiza last week.

https://www.manchestereveningnews.co...rolex-24333723

That said, the same edition also has this story about 2 people getting mugged for their watches (1 Rolex / 1 worth £182k!) where I Iive.
